I saw Sutherland and Horne in Semiramide at the Chicago Lyric in the early 70's. One of the most memorable opera performances I have ever attended in almost 60 years of attending live opera. One though that their voice must be penetrating the walls of the house they filled the auditorium so completely.

I was there as well. We sat way up high but their vouces filled the auditorium. I will never foeget it.

Eleven years later, Ms. Horne sang this with Dame Joan at Dame Joan's farewell. Twenty years later, Ms. Horne sang this at one of her farewells with Renee Fleming as Semiramide.

I also feel their chemistry was such because they were such close friends. That helps tremendously where your singing together. You look for cues from each other and just know.

One of the great vocal partnerships. Remarkable considering that the voices were very different instruments. A delightful clip. Many thanks.

Hello there again… on another video (I can’t remember which one), you mentioned I could use your videos for my compilations, but I wanted to confirm that. There are so many I’d like to start, but I’m having a difficult time finding anything other than the ones you’ve posted. If so, would you want me to cover up your logo? What are your thoughts? Thanks

Why couldn’t the Met put on Semiramide when these two great artists were at their best?

    • @wotan10950

There were reams of articles about that. It had been scheduled as part of a plan for Sutherland to sing Abduction from the Seraglio, Semiramide (w Horne), and The Merry Widow. While Sutherland was relearning Konstanze, she discovered that her voice was no longer comfortable in the role. So she canceled way in advance. Then the Met canceled her appearances in Semiramide and Widow. Unbelievable. Edda Moser sang Konstanza, June Anderson sang Semiramide, both brilliantly, and Widow didn’t appear until decades later.
