We had a 57Chevy Dump truck for Grain on the farm. I drove it as soon as i could reach all the pedals. I really liked the head light and dash of those old boys. This will be fun.
Sweet truck 👍 by the hood emblem it's a 56 but hood could have been changed. 55 hood emblems we're higher up on hood above the body line and not as wide. Looking forward to the build.
It is actually a 56. The hood emblem is different and the fender emblems on a 55 are below the body line, 56 are above. Glad to see you are doing something with that truck. This should be a good build to watch.
Currently doing a similar project, 1955 Chevy 3800 with a LBZ duramax swap, building my own frame and front axle from an eaton rear axle to mimick the original napco front axles. Waiting to see how yours turns out!
Very cool project. I love your plan. Specially the box. The mounts on those are neat with some mods you can reuse the front 55 mounts on the square body frame. Both chassis are same width. Well they are on a 58. I did one years ago and mounting the cab was very easy. Noticed it was a shift on the floor setup. Wondering if a column from a early car with column shift will work. Be cool to have it shift on the wheel. I'll be following this one closely. Always wanted a 50s truck for a winter rig. Me I have a blade on it too. Lol.

Hi Brent, I restored a 1958 original NAPCO short box fleetside. I gave it to my son. In 1958 about half way through the year GM started to make the fleetside box and all through 1959 that's all. (The 1960 was a different body type) This 58 NAPCO was built at the factory and all original. (Yes in 1958 GM made 4 wheel drive factory trucks using NAPCO parts.) The way you can tell a factory NAPCO from a conversion is look at the bracket for the 4 wheel drive shift lever, if it was bolted to the frame it was a conversion if it was riveted it was a factory (Canada) This truck is numbers matching and even has the original seat with no rips. It all so has the original tube type radio. Napco started selling kits to convert mostly Chev and GMC trucks to 4 wheel drive. You could actually order the kit and it would come in two crates with everything you needed, transfer case front axle brackets etc. If you put it in a 1955 chevy for example you could take it out and put in a 1959 Chev or GMC. I actually had this truck as a 2 wheel drive for a while, fun to play around. My son is taking the numbers matching truck body and putting it on an S10 chassis with a custom frame and a big v8 in it. He said I could have the whole NAPCO frame and drive train back if I wanted it. (I do) it even had the date stamped on the axles.

I'm digging the truck build . The neighbors had a 55 2 ton flat bed Chevy when I was a kid. I found it 5 miles away 40 years later, and bought it and got running and used on my property for 20 years, then I sold it to the original owners grandson. He drives it around the farm he cherishes it and would never sell it. I saved it from being crushed.

That box is a great find. I've seen 2015 truck boxes with a lot more rust than yours. I really love those mid 50s trucks. Going to be another good build.👍
Going to be a exciting build. LS engine is perfect. Chassis is going to be a starting point. Inside of cab is good. Drove those trucks as a teenager. Good luck.

The good thing about a pickup cab is; you can lay it over on its back, and work on the bottom right in front of you, rather than working overhead.

I reused stock steering column in my 55 Chevy truck. Shortened it up. Bearing on the end and a ujoint. Works good.

Personal opinion, and that's all it is, is that a long bed looks best as a fleetsides and a short bed best as a step sides.
