Great idea. I cut them in half , fill with potting soil and start my garden plants in them. Then plant the plants tubes and all in my garden.
You can also fill the roll with soil, place a seed in it, let it start and then just plant the roll in your garden.

One of my favorite fire starters. When dipping the roll in wax I like to add a string, and then fill in interior with dryer lint. Build the fire around the device and then light the string--it's incredibly reliable.

I used petrolium jelly (vasoline) and a cotton ball or cotton round to start a fire.

You didn’t notice because your back was turned, but that roll of toilet paper you threw behind you was quickly snatched up by a bear. He grabbed the TP, pumped his paw as if to say YES!!!!. Then scurried back into the woods! 😉

Paul your story reminded me of the little rabbit that had stop next to a bush and was relieving himself when a huge bear appeared and set down next to him. His little rabbit knees were knocking together in extreme fear when the bear looked over at him and said, “have you ever had trouble with doo doo sticking to your fur?” The rabbit shaking like a leaf said, “no sir”, so the bear picked him up and wiped his butt with him. 🐻
I do that with dried pinecones in the fall. They look nice, and get the fireplace going every time. I put pine oil in the paraffin too.

Where do you get the pine oil and does it help it burn or just add scent?

I do something similar, I fill the toile roll with dryer lint packed tight, also soak in paraffin wax, it can then be sliced after cooling and used as fire starters"…haven’t tried it yet but was thinking of running a candle wick through the center before putting in the hot wax, my thoughts are as a long candle or slice the tube for short candles….
I used the wax to seal the lint in, but I keep a bunch of tp tubes/lint in a big ziplock in my bugout bag (and a rolled up birch bark). The grandkids, ages 4 and 6, both can start fires with the lint and a Ferro rod.
Doubt it would work as a candle as the whole thing is essentially a wick at that point. All the compacted lint and cardboard tube would begin to catch as soon as the wick burned down far enough.

I put dryer lint in them, then drizzle melted bit’s of candle wax (that are no longer useful for candles) over them for fire starters. Never throw away broken candles or what wax you have left in the bottom of a jar candle! Works great for fire starters! Can put bits of string and such in the egg holding portion of egg cartons and drizzle with melted wax. Break off an egg portion to use as a fire-starter whenever you need one. Great for taking camping! You can also use the cotton from pill bottle inserts. ‘Make do or do without!’

living in a world that doesnt see the joy in recycling all our stuff!thats why i love the punk traveler movement in the uk we always used everything about us that was thrown in skips for art,music(i would make drums out of big oil tins),survival when the supermarkets threw away so much food we would make sure it got used ,bless ya james your a star in welsh= seren!

I've probably got half a dozen of those empty roll tubes on a shelf in my bathroom just sitting there. Paper towel tubes can also be used. Just cut to length.
What I do not have is any Gulf Wax.
I just ordered some on Amazon and it will be here tomorrow.
I can barter them for other prepper items once I've made my own supply

This works with just about any cardboard. I've done it with cereal boxes and paper pulp egg cartons. Corrugated cardboard can be used also. Really great idea. Thanks for sharing. I keep a slab of wax on hand. It's amazing what all you can do with it.

If you don't flatten the tubes, you will have waterproof binoculars. That way the pretend optics won't fog up!

I use tp cores and paper towel cores stuffed with shipping and newspaper for assisting in getting the wood stove going. I have also used dryer lint.

I have used dryer lint and wrapped with a sheet of newspaper. I’ve used egg cartons with lint or chicken bedding and wax too.

James, I make fire starters using the wax and 100% cotton rounds. I use an old secondhand frypan and soak the rounds in the wax, using a spatula, put the saturated rounds on aluminum foil to cool and dry. Then store them in a baggie. They work for starting campfires and a fire in your woodstove. Thanks for the tip on using the rolls, and I'm thinking cut the rolls that come with paper towels and that should also work.

I think that is a fantastic idea. I might want to wrap it in plastic wrap real tight. So it doesn't wind up melting or sticking to things inside wallet. I also have a very small fishing kit my wallet as well. Three small hooks and some braided spider line. Which may be a brand name I can't remember. But it holds up virtually indefinitely versus a standard single strand fishing line. It doesn't get brittle. The stick and Bobber and other stuff you'll have to figure out while you're in the woods, it's not hard. Pine cones float. Worms are everywhere. And of course the stick..lol
Of course if you can find a wicked witch, I remember hearing in a movie, that they also float... Just another alternative..lol

Mix sawdust with the wax until it's the consistency of play-dough, then stuff the mixture into the toilet paper roll, and you'll have mini fuel logs that burn for hours.

@@WayPointSurvival I do. I have had a cooking fire ready in seconds with one, and kept my tent warm all night on two.
I take the tp cores and stuff one inside the other as tightly as I can before soaking it in candle wax. I've used one to start a fire in a heavy rain. It will burn for 15-20 minutes.
Yes, I have seen that method done as well but I think they're quite bulky. I came up with this method as a way to streamline the process.
I have used paper towel and toilet paper rolls for starting my flower and gardening seeds for a long time. You just plant them right into the soil. I also take my used dryer sheets and lint and stuff them inside the toilet paper roll. Then i dip each end in my used up wax in my wax burner. I save some up for fire starters when camping or bon fires. I like your idea also. Very compact.

Those BUTANE COOKERS ARE THE BEST. I keep one in my car for a picnic or coffee break on trips. I added a hotplate & made a barbie that has been used on trips & picnics.

I have done all sorts of projects with cans, but it never occurred to me to dent the rim to create a pouring spout. Excellent stuff.

Just buy yourself a bag of Fritos. They're cheap, you get plenty of them, and they are just as flammable as your toilet roll. Plus you can eat them when you get hungry, and you could use it to bait small traps.
Sure. They burn well and you can certainly do that. This video was on how to use something that usually gets thrown away.

Yes, that's another way to do it. However, it makes them fairly large for carry whereas this method keeps them small and flat and easily packable.

Been saving these ingredients , but I thinking along the lines of candle shaped . Glad I saw this video before going with the old plan . If make according to the Way Point plan , I can pack more in less space ! 👍

Way cool. 50 year hobo here. Another little trick for a roll of T P is to remove the cardboard tube carefully from the paper roll and stuff it in an empty coffee can. Then pour a small bottle of rubbing alcohol into the can. Light it for a smokeless warming source. You can put a bent up metal clothes hanger on top and heat a small tin can of water to instant coffee hot. If you not in a hurry it will warm a can of soup good enough. I never dilute canned soup as most of them are almost just dishwater if you do.

if its really hot outside, like 100F here in Kansas, you maybe need to wrap the waxed flat in foil to keep it from melting all over the place in wallet or pack.
Actually, once the wax soaks into the cardboard, as long as you don't put too much in it, it shouldn't be a problem.
James, THANK YOU for this idea. I’ve been saving these rolls, because I too always thought there aught to be something useful they could be used for. I hated to throw them away. thinking someday either I, or someone else, would come up with a great idea and you have. This is such a great idea and makes use of something we’d ordinarily throw away and waste. AWESOME IDEA, AWESOME VIDEO, AWESOME JOB!!!

I've done this with a bunch of materials, including cotton balls. Those will give impressive flames, but waxing unrolled cotton balls is like mad science!
The making itself is easy enough, it's just that they can release 5 feet long flames in high winds... and I mean 5 feet long, not 5 feet tall!

I've been soaking scrap papers in beeswax (it started with expired phone book pages) for over 20 years. It's a perfect fire starter. I call it homemade birch bark.

Good idea. Another idea, you can get a 100 count box of individually sealed alcohol wipes for a little over a dollar. Make very good fire starters along with 1st aid.

Grocery store produce departments get crates of veggies in waxed cardboard boxes. Being waxed, they are not recyclable with the regular cardboard. They are just disposed of in their landfill waste.
Get friendly with the produce managers and they will likely give or save some for you. They are waterproof and handy for many things, such as fire starters, and also for construction uses, such as forms for concrete, building temporary rainproof structures, improvised cooler chests or storage bins etc.

I have a use for these.
I use them as moulds for making candles out of old used candle wax.
All you need is a piece of string for the wick.
And tear off the bog roll tube.

Yea you know getting the information out there for all whom can make use of if great, i say sometimes you have to use your imaganatio, and you can make just about anything and thats what you do for all of us your followers!
And all the repliys are great , so i ask that maybe you could come up with something compleatly new for us, and paper twoels are great too. Sorry bad spelling and small keyboard on phone.
So paper towels rolls are great for cordage, and you can crush them in your pack and still cordage wont tangle, and put said cordage back,always have to use your things so they are working to your needs.
