Pfc. Cobb's story was never properly told. Before he joined the Paratroopers he was already a veteran of the North African campaign. On his way back to The States his transport ship was sunk by a German U-boat. He survived the sinking and volunteered for the Paratroopers. He was wounded during the Normandy invasion, survived Operation Market Garden and the siege of Bastogne without a scratch.
If I went through everything he went through I might be a prick too.
This is my only gripe with Band of Brothers, they were so generous portraying some of the men and yet very cruel portraying others.

Thank you for taking a moment to appreciate Scott Grimes in his role as Malarkey. He didn’t “get his own episode”-and in spite of the fact he doesn’t particularly look or sound like Don Malarkey-he does a superb job portraying the exhaustion and existential terror of being put in the line of fire too many times. The real Don Malarkey was a character 😁. He was also a soldier. A warrior. An American.

Webster doesn't get this redemptive arc in real life. If you read his own memoir he talks about trying to get out of missions. On this patrol he talks about how he had an opportunity to volunteer to take the place of a replacement that couldn't swim, but he didn't want to, so he sat out of the patrol.
The boat that tipped over actually had the replacement in it and he had to be rescued.

Growing up watching war movies that got so much wrong- "Battle of the Bulge" is a great example, I'm always hoping for the impossible goal of 100% accuracy, yet I'm torn with "Band of Brothers", because it is so good. Since these were real guys, I think it's only right are portrayed with the actual good or bad, but for the "story" it tells, the series feels so right as it is, even with the mistakes or deliberate changes from the reality.
If the show had been done in the typical Hollywood fashion, I'd be a lot less willing to give the inaccuracies a pass!

On Webster, "He had long ago made it a rule of his Army life never to do anything voluntarily. He was an intellectual, as much an observer and chronicler of the phenomenon of soldiering as a practitioner. He was almost the only original Toccoa man who never became an NCO. Various officers wanted to make him a squad leader, but he refused. He was there to do his duty, and he did it-he never let a buddy down in combat, in France, Holland, or Germany-but he never volunteered for anything and he spurned promotion".- S. Ambrose

Webster reminds me of my Grandpa. Promoted to Cpl three times, stretched out his hospital stay during the Bulge, tried to learn to drive a jeep in the field to get off the line (he failed), and would never ever talk about the fighting itself. He was there, he wanted to get it over with and get back alive.

I love the way they express so visually the soldiers experiences by the appearance of their uniforms. Webster's guilt is what leads him to volunteer for the patrol and earn respect from the men again...and he did. Episode 9, you are absolutely not ready... Currahee ♠

For anyone interested, the real David Webster's family has published a memoir book comprised of his diary and letters he wrote home during the war about his experiences in Easy Company. The book is called Parachute Infantry and it covers his journey from basic training to the end of the war. It's pretty damn good. Lots of details in it and lots of stuff that was depicted on the show. They dramatized his return to the company after his injury here as being resented for staying away too long, but in reality Webster was eager to return to Easy company after he got injured as he missed the other soldiers and didn't feel right staying in the hospital.
Also, yes. Winters is an absolute legend. I highly recommend reading his' memoir Beyond Band of Brothers. He talks about this decision about the 2nd patrol, and oh so much more.

I thought the main point of watching reactors was to see their blind reactions, but so many people give these sort of half-spoilers, giving up that an episode with be emotional even if tghey don't give the details.
