    Poland, 1937, 123 minutes, B&W
    Yiddish with new English subtitles
    Directed by Michal Waszynski
Based on the play by S. Ansky
The Dybbuk is a Yiddish film classic based on the celebrated play of the same name by S. Ansky, written during the turbulent years of 1912-1917. The idea for the play came to Ansky as he led a Jewish folklore expedition through small towns of Eastern Europe, which was cut short by the outbreak of World War I. The Dybbuk reflects Ansky's deep perception of the shtetl's religious and cultural mores, as well as his insightful appreciation of its hidden spiritual resources. Plans to produce the play in Russian by Stanislavsky's Moscow Art Theater in 1920 were aborted by the Bolshevik Revolution. Ansky, who died in 1920 never lived to see his play produced. The play however, was destined to become one of the most widely-produced in the history of Jewish theater. Its rich ethnographic tapestry, mystical themes, star-crossed lovers and haunting melodies were designed to bridge the historical abyss.
Boundaries separating the natural from the supernatural dissolve as ill-fated pledges, unfulfilled passions and untimely deaths ensnare two families in a tragic labyrinth of spiritual possession. The film was made on location in Poland in 1937 and brought together the best talents of Polish Jewry, script writers, composers, choreographers, set designers, actors and historical advisors. The film's exquisite musical and dance interludes evoke the cultural richness of both shtetl communities and Polish Jewry on the eve of WWII.
The Dybbuk is one of the Top 10 Jewish Films as selected by Kenneth Turan, film critic for the Los Angeles Times and NPR's Morning Edition. He made the list as host of the Spring 2010 film weekend "Letting Jews be Jews" at Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA.
"...the most ambitious Yiddish movie of its day... In fact, The Dybbuk is a time capsule... Drama intensifies a given moment, film freezes it. Whatever the movie's original intentions, events have dictated that its themes will be read as harbingers of exile and oblivion."

I've seen this film in two different edits; both in poor condition. This is the best-looking print I've seen. I hope it's available on DVD.

If your not Jewish this is a very old & terrifying entity & a part of our mythological history. You need to understand it before you watch any of the films made between 37 & now. It is both sad & horrifying if it's you it's after.

At one point the Rebbe who conducts the rabbinical trial tells the Messenger that "if it had been otherwise decided in the worlds above, I would reverse the decision." Isn't that sacrilege or behaving as though he's more powerful than God? That line just seemed strange from a Hasidic rabbi as he's talking about going over the heads of heavenly beings...

I know this is an old reply, but it is an interesting question.
      Yes and no.
Although it is not ideal in terms of humility and fear of HaShem, Israel does literally means “He who wrestles with G-d and prevails.” Jews like to argue, even with G-d himself. There is an old joke that I believe is from the Talmud itself, in which a rabbi is debating three of his colleagues. When G-d sends undeniable signs that the single rabbi is correct, the three rabbis say “So it is 2 against 3.”

Lilith was just a human she had nothing to do with becoming a demon that stuff is made up bull crap. Heck she might be made up period.
There are two types of possessions there's the demon kind which is the crazy scary kind where host floats and then there's the dibbuk which hardly really do a lot of the scary things. They just like to mess up people's minds and like to talk out of hosts and all that crap the worse dybbuk do is cause scary illusions to host. But demons dont care to possess as much as them. If you look up the tulpa that's them( dibbuk).

      Yes Cain found a wife.
No Lilith didn't exist or whatever. She isnt the mother of monsters lol. Enoch's book says mermaids are women who slept with angels (nephilim creators). Surely the mating created a lot of monsters including incubi.
