  • A very enjoyable evening spent at Coventry station on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from London Northwestern Railway, West Midlands Railway, Virgin Trains, Cross Country and freight from Freightliner.
    The original station was opened in 1838 by the London and Birmingham Railway but only stayed open for 2 years before getting rebuilt a few hundred feet down the line closer to Rugby.
    The newer station saw several upgrades and modifications over the years. Most of which were around during the steam period. This saw a turntable, water tower and engine shed all built at the station. As to where these were located on the station I couldn't say in all honesty. One thing you will notice about this station is that it has road bridges at either end, because of this it made expansion very difficult and for a long time the station could only accommodate two lines and the platforms couldn't get to long, this resulted in some of the longer intercity services being longer than the platforms.
    The station stayed in this fashion right up until the 1960's when the station went through a heavy overhaul, both road bridges were widened and the old station demolished and rebuilt yet again to the form we now all know, during the time of the demolition some areas of the station were well over 120 years of age, the new station now compromised of a two storey booking hall which was reinforced with a concrete frame linking the outer platform and island platform with a bridge. The station was oficialy reopened in 1962.
    As with a lot of stations in the time it had a parcels depot located at the southern end of the station because mail by rail was the easiest and quickest way of getting it around the country, plus at the time you didn't have the likes of Fed Ex, DHL, UPS etc working in this country, everything was done by Royal Mail. Hence why we the TPO (Travelling Post Office) was a thing back in the day. The parcels depot was eventually closed and has since been replaced by a multi storey car park however you can still see some of the infrastructure in the form of an electrification gantry and some of the old platforms still remaining.
    Last year the station had 7.5 million people walk through its doors.
    My next rush hour film will be from London Kings Cross on the East Coast Mainline.

    Great video, really nice to sit down and watch one. Just curious, what are anyone’s opinions on HS2?

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 Před 4 lety +2

      Personally, I think it's necessary. Sure it's expensive, and as its so large will affect a large number of people, but realistically nothing else can be done that provides the same benefit without costing significantly more. The West Coast is in urgent need of capacity relief, and the Midland and East Coast will also soon need it too. The WCML upgrade 10 years ago basically proved that you can't just upgrade it as within 5 years of completion further upgrades were necessary to accomodate longer 11 car trains and still its overcrowded. Furthermore, schemes such as Midlands Connect and Northern Powerhouse Rail, which are just as necessary (particularly NPR) as HS2 can't be completed without HS2 having already been built. And the argument it's damaging to the environment is a little bit silly IMO, as it's negligible compared with road traffic and the amount of ancient woodland destroyed across the entire scheme is less than the Lower Thames Crossing, which is only 5% of HS2's total length

    • @citybricks228
      @citybricks228 Před 4 lety +2

      Very true, I think HS2 would effect a massive amount of people wanting to travel further. It would probably free up the existing networks for freight to no longer be on the road, but more of it on rail. That would therefore free up space on the roads, causing all round less carbon emissions and traffic.
