    Just watching these old races. Man, the cars looked so much faster back then compared to today's NASCAR. They were all over the track. Raw speed. The commentators were always shouting because of how loud everything was.
    Look at today. I guess it's just the certain camera angles that make the cars look like they are all going the same speed. LOTS of drafting. None of that uncut no restrictor plate racing of the day.

    • @alwaysopen7970
      @alwaysopen7970 Před 4 lety +2

      They were racing back then rather than dancing round and playing corporate games. Look at the names of the drivers, these were men and not cookie cutter go cart boys that look good pimping their sponsors. Jimmie Johnson has the personality of a goldfish. Dale Junior is mild compared to his father but knew all of these guys when young.
      DE was plain badass back then, became the face of NASCAR Winston Cup and was the reason the sport grew wildly that decade.

      @scarbourgeoisie Před 3 lety

      Actually, these (big body) race cars were no faster than the cars of today. Today’s stock cars average the same Daytona 500 pole position speeds as these cars, but do it with restrictor plates and more mass. It was back in the mid 80’s when things went gonzo. The cars got smaller and the average speeds increased to around 205 MPH until the plates were introduced in the late 80’s and slowed everything down to the same speeds of the big cars of the 70’s.

    *POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1980 NATIONAL 500 (28 of 31):*
    #2 Dale Earnhardt (4032 points with 4 wins, Chevrolet)
    #11 Cale Yarborough (-105 with 4 wins, Chevrolet)
    #27 Benny Parsons (-164 with 2 wins, Chevrolet)
    #43 Richard Petty (-168 with 2 wins, Chevrolet)
    #88 Darrell Waltrip (-265 with 5 wins, Chevrolet)
    #15 Bobby Allison (-393 with 4 wins, Ford)
    #90 Jody Ridley (-621, Chevrolet)
    #47 Harry Gant (-714, Chevrolet)
    Richard Childress (#3 Chevrolet) had a bad Summer and dropped to 11th. Despite his great 1979 season, Joe Millikan (Chevrolet) had to scale down to a partial schedule for 1980 and even became Petty’s relief driver after he got injured in the Pocono 500. Second-year driver Terry Labonte upset everyone by winning the Southern 500. Other major races were won by part-timers like Buddy Baker (Chevrolet) with the Daytona 500 and the Alabama 500, Neil Bonnett with the Pocono 500 and the Talladega 500 while David Pearson won the Rebel 500 after taking over the Chevrolet #1 Donnie Allison used to race.
    Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Charlotte’s case, the Memorial Day race was the World 600 while the Fall one was the National 500.

I recall Terry having harsh words for Swerving Irvan after he had caused yet another wreck at Talladega. And there was the time at Bristol when Lake Speed took Texas Terry out while he was leading. The crew patched up Labonte's car, he went back in the race many laps down, took Speed out, drove to the garage, and said that Speed was running slow and "must've had a problem " and he couldn't help spinning him out. You're right -- "don't mess with Texas Terry"!! And driving like that is why none of the big teams would hire Bown to drive
