    IMO, over tightening will happen when guys put tools on the filter to tighten. Finger tighten to the max, never had a problem. Love your vids, keep em comin.

    As always great job Del.. I always just let the Harley dealership do the oil change/service on my bike while it was still under warranty. The last time they did it, it cost me $379 plus shop fees and shop supplies plus tax.. WTF!?!?!? Now that it is out of warranty I do all of the work on it. I do all of the work on all of our members bikes, in fact I just did a 3 hole fluid change service and dual caliper front brake pads on my VP's street glide. That reminds me, he still owes me for the parts........

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Před 5 lety

      Hey Brother, Thats so common, im so often told that guys are getting charged $500 'all in' for a service, and that makes it almost unlivable in real life.. that can feed the kids and pay the bills at home which is far more important to the average Joe right?.! But its the going rate i guess, nothing unjust happening there, just the cost of owning a Harley Davidson. Fact is also that you won't effect your warranty by doing the services yourself either, they tried all that BS a long time ago, and the law stepped on the practice, so under current legislation, no dealer can void your warranty because you didn't take it in for service... as long as you keep the invoices for genuine parts, and the mileage is recorded, then there is nothing they can do... only if something that YOU directly did wrong causes a claim can they penalize you... and even then, it can only effect that item, not the rest of your warranty... Its awesome to hear that you take care of the Club bikes, thats Brotherhood right there.. Take care and keep in touch.. LL&R, Del.

    Hi D&P.
    What a beautiful machine.
    I watched the entire build series and still love this bike.
    I did a double take and wondered why you were using thread lock on your sump plug, until you said it was hydemar (?) grease. Lol.
    Good tip on lubing the oil filter seal, thanks. I've always put a film of oil on the seal, but never removed it and lubed the entire thing...It makes a lot of sense.

    For my oil filters on my cars, trucks and Sportster, I pre-fill them on the workbench and let the media soak up the oil. I keep adding the oil until it stays at the top. You would be surprised at how much oil will soak into the media. Then I pour the oil out of the filter back into the bottle and quickly install the filter. The media is soaked completely and minimizes a dry start. If you've ever put a dry oil filter on an engine, you can actually hear the difference from an oil filter that has been pre-soaked.

    Every day's a school day... I've always wet the seal with oil on the outer edge but never thought to wet the inside edge. On another note I had an over tight filter on my Tiger wich was a right pain. Luckily TMF had a similar problem and got passed it by drilling a couple of small holes through the side of his oil filter removing cap thingy whilst on the filter and put in a couple of self tappers to secure them together. Came off a treat 👍 Great vid by the way brother 😀

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for watching buddy, I've seen the self tapper trick, but if they're proper tight, as if they're almost welded on, then they can still tear out, as it's barely 0.5mm sheet metal, and then you've made matters worse, as it starts to rip apart... the best way is always some big hefty pipe grips and crush a square in the end, then you can get it off easily! Take care buddy, appreciate you watching!

    Hylomar may be "totally unnecessary" in your opinion Marc, but as with anything Del Does, and Me for that matter at work, going that extra bit as a precaution against any possible future leaks doesn`t hurt one bit, i do plumbing in my job as a kitchen fitter and it`s always better to "overkill" something that has fluids roaring through it under pressure than to not,, but what do i know, ive only been a kitchen fitter for 37 years. ;) Great vid as per Del, informative, easy to follow and well presented. Great video as usual.. One thing though.. Some Harleys required the oil be checked in the upright position... A total PITA.. Anyway good rule of thumb on these is if the dip stick is firmly fixed to the cap "bung as you say" then it is upright.. If the stick has a pivot at the cap it is on the side stand... I had this on my 02 Heritage Softail.. I found through the service department I could buy a dipstick for the newer model and check it on the side stand..I did that :) But as you say "ALLWAYS check your manual! :)

      Good advice mate, I try to make sure I mention several times in every Harley service video to invest in a manual, as I'm sure you'll agree, it's the best £60 you'll ever spend... I asked a H-D Master Tech once, if the dealership was on fire, which bike would you rescue first, and his answer was 'none of them, let 'em burn, I'd grab my manuals before anything else, cos many of them going back to the 50's are unreplacable'.. .and you're right every bike has a different manual!

      @Moonfleet41  Před 5 lety +1

      @@jamesweber4938 There's nothing in the service manual that says to do it, but many owners like to do so, because over a cold winter, condensation can form inside the motor, leading to rust and water content in the Spring, so just for probably nothing more than peace of mind, people change their oil at the beginning of the season... some also swear that leaving dirty oil in the engine over winter can do harm also, but tbh, we love our bikes so we should do what we feel happiest with, whatever it may be, don't ya think?!

    I'm looking at doing an oil change myself so just wanted to ask... Given that you state it is bad to get hylomar inside your engine why do you use it for this? Is replacing the o-ring not enough?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Před 5 lety +2

      Blue Hylomar is a non-drying sticky sealant and, of course, it doesn't do to have globs of that floating round in your oil, so as I stated, put it on the thread only... it's a sealant designed as long ago as the 1930's for sealing oil joints and sump plugs... it has other uses these days, but that's where it came from... if there are any distruptions in the thread on a tapered plug or a nick in the 0-ring you can still get oil weepage, which is pretty common and so many people just swing on the bolt to over tighten it in order to seal it...! But with a little smear of Hylomar around the thread the plug glides in to place at it's min. torque setting and seals first time, every time... don't use it if you feel you don't want to, it's not essential.

    Del! I'm hoping you'll get to comment on this. I've been riding for almost 60 years and 6 months ago bought my first Harley. I chose a '09 XL 1200 L as it's not too heavy. I do a low annual mileage, maybe a couple of thousand miles. I was looking around for oil and came across LUCAS 50WT V-TWIN SYNTHETIC. It seems to satisfy the requirements of the Sportster and it would be changed annually so I'm wondering if it's something I can safely use as an OAP on a State pension. I know the Dealers would throw up their hands in horror, but needs must. My local HD shop has already given me the wrong tyre pressures ( 36F, 42R instead of 30F and 40R) for laced wheels, so I'm not confident about their advice. Thank you for the tutorials, I'm sure I will be visiting often.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Před 5 lety

      Hi there.. OK, congratulation on your first Harley, i hope you're enjoying the summer so far on it.. With the oil, there is always more benefit in choosing a multigrade oil if you can, Lucas 50W will be ok, but its maybe a bit thick for cold mornings, and in England we get plenty of those aye. You don't need to spend a fortune on special oils for your Harley, they are pretty robust and revving motor, no real need for a fully synthetic, a half decent 20w50 semi-synth multigrade will do the job.. There is a recommendation printed in Harley Davidson service manuals that goes "" In the absence of a dedicated Harley Davidson oil, use oil rated for DIESEL engines"" .. so if you are on a budget, you could go to your local motor parts store, and get some semi synth 20w50 diesel oil, and that would do the trick just fine... and also be a lot more affordable that genuine HD oils... Hope that helps you out, Good luck with it and enjoy your Harley.. Del.

  • @rasmushjs5318

    Be aware of when you remove the oil filter, just a few drops of oil on the front (rubber) motor mount will destroy it.

    Hello Del
    I just bought a dyna Wide Glide 99, i have been reading up on the twin cam engine. This weekend im going to tear down the cam cover and check the tensioners that is supposed to be a problem. Do you have any plans for your Harleys cam chain tensioners?
    Really like your projekts and Chanel! Thanks for the hours of entertainment and all the things ive learned.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Před 4 lety

      Hi Tim.. thank you for your kind words, and congratulations on your new Harley.. its a good idea to check your tensioners at that age... i was lucky and mine had been all replaced before i bought the bike. new tensioners, followers and chains too.. so lucked in with this bike.. but its a good move to check them if you don;t have evidence of the job in the history file. Good luck with it, i hope it all goes well... Thanks for watching.. Del.

    Hi Mate! I would’ve guessed that you would’ve done some forensics on the engine, including oil change, BEFORE you undertook all of the Work and mods of the build. Otherwise how would you feel confident that the bike was worthy of your time and effort? Anyway, I love what you’ve done with the build! Hi to Pen!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Byron, I did indeed check it out, I knew the oil was pretty black, but that is little more than soot, as she's done 45k miles and is 20yrs old, so possibly just a little bore wear.. the actual viscosity of the oil was good, and no foreign matter in it... I also trusted in the service history, as you may know, one owner from new, and I bought it directly from him, not a dealer... the service stamps were all correct and in place, all from the same dealership, and it had only just had the cam chain tensioners and cams replaced a matter of 1000 miles before... so I was confident in the bike right from the get go... plus I know that any Harley big twin engine can do 300k miles without missing a beat... this one's just nicely run in lol Take care, keep in touch, always good to hear from you my friend...

    What size is your garage? It's fitted out tighter than a ships machinist mate's compartment. Out on the ranch our "toolshed" and work space is a 20 ft CONEX. Since we maintain everything from trucks to cars to small engines and also lots of electrical equipment we have double sets of most tools metric and SAE. Had my first bike when I was 16; one year old 1964 BSA Lightning Rocket 650.
