That’s a great oil change tip. I’ll do that, thank you. Another one I heard is when you’re changing the primary oil, take the derby cover off first then drain the oil. That way if something goes wrong and you can’t get the derby cover off you still have oil in the primary till you can fix the problem.
@@Hhhhhgggihgdd I've seen several videos where they suggest changing the o-ring plus using a dab of teflon paste. Never heard teflon tape tho. Just a back up, i guess, in case you pinch the o-ring unknowingly.
Thanks Doc, I thought you were gonna just say what everyone knows about removing the oil cap to increase the flow. But you schooled me on the breather flap thing.....keep doing what you doing. If I'm ever in in Charleston , I will say thanks in person
LowCountryHarley and Doc harley, Thank you. Thank yo ufor not saying the job should only be done at the harley shop. Allowing your customers to feel in control will lead to higher harley sales. The tip was eye opening and valuable. Please keep posting and you will see an increase to your bottom line.
If you don't know that taking your oil cap off will make the oil drain out will make your oil come out a lot faster then you shouldn't be changing your oil. But I will say I just changed the oil in my street glide last night 57k and when I've took the drain plug out probably the last 2 oil changes I thought it was weird that the oil ran out fast even though my cap was still on or in. Which this explains all the oil in my breather... Thanks for the much needed tip I didn't know I needed.. learn something new every day.
Great video. Concise and informative. You will make customers feel confident in having their bike serviced by your dealership when they can't or don't want to do it themselves. Keep it up!
You the man,ive raced bikes ,3 wheelers, ect.i just bought a 1979 shovel head chopper with a 5ft. rake and ive found out forget all about any other motorcycles because this bike is a whole new world, ive had to start at step 1 and learn my way through everything with an open mind, guys like you make guys like me lives a whole lot easier and i thank you so much,
after 30 yrs of Not riding...bought a new 2018 Ultra limited...a few weeks ago....now it's time to learn a few things about this bike...great info...thanks Doc
Thanks for the tip. You should inform the people at HD who write the Owner's Manual: 1. heat engine. 2. remove oil filler plug/dipstick. 3. remove oil drain plug. 4 - 10 continues.
Excellent tip and explanation - thank you. Changed my rocker-boxes last winter and came across the valve system and the o-rings associated to them in the process. Both O-rings were gone in the old boxes (lower) 2010 FXDF.
Thank you, I was wondering why my oil didn't drain all the way. Thought it was done. Put the drain plug back. Added 2 quarts and it over filled. That was impossible!. Seems like it didn't drain all of it. But there was no dripping. That's why I put the drain plug back on. Thinking all the oil came out. Those breathers you mentioned the reason it didn't drain. Now I know why. Thank you for that tip. I'll watch for that next time. Thanks
Great knowledge to know .Thanks for the info that gives me a better understanding and for sure tells me why I should keep my oil changes updated. Thanks again
Good insight Doc. Had not thought of checking how the oil drained before loosening the filler plug. I had had issues in the past on a 2009 FLHTCU with excess oil in the air cleaner. Had the breathers changed. Still did what I thought was excess. Never got that resolved, but don't have that bike anymore. The other thing I noticed in your video was the drain pan. Did not look like it was going to hold all the oil that it was going to drain. Didn't see the pan toward the end of the video. Thank you for your videos. You pass on good insight.

Thanks Doc!
Oh how i wish that i had seen this video last week! But now I know. Thanks for the tip! Please keep them coming! My first view of your channel and sir, You have earned a new subscriber. Again, Thank you for posting this.
Just did my change and thanks for this tip. I am now certain my breathers are working properly. If I might add I used a inch pound torque wrench and did the math. So 17 ft lbs x 12= 204 inch pounds. One doesn't need 2 wrenches. Thanks again Doc!
Thank you. I have a crankcase breather setup with the braided line going to a separate filter back toward the rear of the frame. I will take a look at all that this weekend. Good Tip.
That is a very good tip.. Thanks Now my tip of the day is .. Be kind to your mother.. Or if you don't have one ... be kind to someone else's mother !! Ok 😀👍
Thumbs-Up #2.9K-PLUS I am, Friday morn 28 June 2019! I recently (finally) found and bought my first Sportster, an 883, and I watch it drain the entire time to check the color of the oil. Life, or at least MY life, became instantly better once knowing I FINALLY have my own personal Sportster! Thank You, for your tech tips.
Doc you da man. I spent many years in the U.S. Military and afterwards in the aircraft maintenance field. The “It’s good enough for the government” has never actually been around aircraft maintenance. Anyways my point is that I must say that your professionalism is impeccable. Especially your attention to detail. You treat each bike like it’s your own with safety in mind always. I dig that. As motorcyclist we are doing something that’s risky already, probably even more risky than flying, so there is no need to cut corners, do something half a$$ or not up to par. You my friend do none of those things. Trust me my first bike was a 49 Pan, Rigid, Suicide and boy did I ride by the seat of my pants and work on the bike similarly. Not anymore. Thanks for your videos. They allow a novice motorcycle mechanic like myself to learn and take after a true professional. ✌🏽🇺🇸🙏
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thank you as well, Doc. May I ask if your father is still around? I've heard you mention him numerous times in your videos. I can only imagine he had such a positive influence on you and how you approach things today. Thanks again.
Doc you need to walk out on the sales floor and grab one of those HD $29.00 drain pans and charge it to the store, I hated spending that much on it but I sure do love the low profile and the 2 recessions to put your drain plugs
That’s really useful insight. I noticed oil on the outside covers of my push rods. I thought there was a leak in the push rod tube, but it was oil coming from my air filter.
Doc I am an old mechanic “retired” but I don’t have a 5” wrench. Just poking you a little bit and I love your videos.
Been working on engines for 20+ years but every time I see one of his videos I learn something new.
