And what about the thousands of yards of contaminated soils that have leakage sludge and the radionuclide contamination that has already hit the 2000-6000 cfs groundwater to the Columbia? K is one section of the problem, right? So the cleanup is how many percent “clean”?
About 50 to 100 more years to go?
Agreed that the job is far from done. It'll be - at least - another three decades, possibly more, to make the entire 586 square miles of the Hanford site truly benign. It's not a simple dust pan and brush operation.
However, as slow and ponderous as the job is, it is being done. What the operators at Hanford are learning now, can and will be applied to other sites not only here in the U.S., but around the world.
9:20 zero incidents still? Zero cancer?
Worker responsibility as well as protection go hand in hand - workers can't be dismissive about protecting themselves. As inconvenient as it can be, they have to strictly follow safety protocols. Nor can contractors dismiss worker safety as only a cost on a balance sheet. Perhaps in that one particular area there were no screw ups. But elsewhere within the 586 square miles of the Hanford site, as you suggest, operations got sloppy with the resultant incidents that could lead to cancer. Keep the pressure on.
I'll buy some sludge off you guys I can pave my driveway with it!

As a project manager (software), I find an effort of this scale, magnitude and risk to be absolutely fascinating. I can imagine how satisfying it is to see this kind of progress!
