  • There are plenty of myths and misconceptions about cats.
In this video, we will separate fact from fiction by sharing 16 common myths about cats.
Cats always land on their feet
Cats often land on their feet when they fall from a height. This is because they have innate ability known as ‘righting reflex’, whereby they’re able to twist their bodies around in the air while they are falling.
Where this is all true, the fact is that cats don’t always land on their feet. And this myth is very concerning because many cat owners take it literally.
    Cats aren’t affectionate.
Many people think that cats are standoffish and less likely to love their owners. But the truth is that cats do love their owners-they just express affection much differently than dogs.
On that note, a study published in the journal Current Biology, found that cats form attachments to their owners that are similar to those that dogs and even babies form with their caregivers. Other studies have shown that cats see their owners as a source of comfort and security.
Cats Can Thrive on a Vegan Diet
Some people who choose a vegan diet also subject their feline friend to a meatless lifestyle. But cats are obligate carnivores and need meat to satisfy their nutritional needs.
    Cats have nine lives
Although this is a silly myth, the concerning thing about this superstition is what it implies.
Many cat owners think that their feline doesn’t need particular care. But the reality is that cats require good care, preventative medicine, good food, good hygiene, and lots of love to ensure a long and happy life.
Cats purr when they are happy
Cats often purr when they are happy. However, they may also purr when they are stressed, frightened, are feeling unwell or in pain. They purr in order to provide comfort to themselves.
Milk is a great treat for cats
Many people think it is okay for cats to drink milk, However, most felines are lactose intolerant.
    Declawing is not harmful
Declawing is a completely unnecessary surgery. Saving your furniture by destroying your cat’s body is not acceptable. Declawing is torturous for your cat.
    Cats are cold and aloof.
Domestic cats are by nature more independent and tend towards solitary habits. This doesn't mean that cats are cold or aloof though.
Cats have had to survive as solitary animals. This means that cats are often wary of strangers or unknown circumstances as a way of self-protection.
    Cats can’t be trained
While not as easily trainable as dogs, cats can indeed be taught certain commands such as sitting, staying or coming with the promise of treats.
    Cats are nocturnal
Many people think cats are nocturnal because their cat wakes them up at 4 o’clock in the morning. However, cats are actually crepuscular. This means that they are most awake at dusk and dawn when there are better hunting opportunities. Cats are not hardwired to sleep during the day and be awake all night
Cats are low-maintenance pets that don't require much care
It’s common to hear that cats don't need as much care as dogs do.
While cats are independent and strong animals, they can also be delicate. As with any other pet in your house, cats need to be looked after as much as dogs do, and neglecting any of their needs can lead to health problems.
    Black cats bring bad luck
Unfortunately, this myth is very concerning for black cats, as statistics have shown that these cats are the least adopted from shelters.
But the reality is that the color of a cat’s fur has nothing to do with luck.
    Cats don’t like dogs
Although dogs and cats have been portrayed in Hollywood as enemies, the truth is that most cats and dogs do not see each other as direct competition and can actually get along very well.
    Cats absolutely hate water
Many cats are actually fascinated by water and some even love to play with it, especially if it is running from a faucet. In reality, cats just generally don't like to be submerged in water.
Cats can see perfectly in total darkness
Depending on the light, the shape of a cat’s pupil can change from almost fully round to vertical slit. Although cats have a superior ability to see in near-darkness, they cannot see in total darkness.
Pregnant women cannot live with cats
This myth about cats giving pregnant women toxoplasmosis has led to some cats being abandoned by their owners.
This infection is very rare in cats who eat commercially prepared cat food, who have been domesticated from birth, and who have received their vaccinations.
And if a cat is not a carrier of this parasite, there's no risk of transmission to a pregnant woman. If you are worried, then have your cat checked for Toxoplasmosis at a vet, and as a double precaution, don't let pregnant women clean out your cat’s litter box with their bare hands.
    All cats love catnip
Cats love catnip and most felines get hyperactive in response to this plant.
However, not all cats respond to catnip. Researchers have found that one in three cats are not affected to catnip.

#2: My buddy is 16 yo and we have a snuggle session every morning before we get out of bed. Been doing it for years. Started when I come home the hospital doubled over in pain from a gallbladder attack. He instantly knew and jumped into bed with me and pressed right up against my abdomen and started to purr, the vibrations calmed me down and made my abdomen feel better. He is the most loving and affectionate cat I have ever had. He loves it when I wrap my arms around him while we sleep and always presses his head against mine and purrs. Best part of my day. I'm dreading the day he's gone. 🐱❤

I read about a cat that lived in a nursing home. Several times a day she would make her rounds room to room and person to person. If she got into bed or on their lap it usually meant that person was going to pass away within 4 hours. Never failed.
She has since passed away herself. Now her daughter now does the same thing.

I agree with what you wrote. I have two cats that are about twelve years old, each. Frisky is the male, and Noodles is the female. I adopted her when she was six months old. And she already had the name, Noodles, which is kind of unusual for a cats name. lol. And I was not going to change it. They are affectioate, in their own unique ways. They are both great cats, and I dread the day that one of them passes away. Luckily, they are both in good health, and can have many, happy content years left. The oldest feline was thirty eight years old. It's name was Creampuff. He lived from 1967--2005. I hope that both my kitties make it to their mid twenties, at least...

My cat was very excited to see me and jumped in my lap and was rambunctious and active but immediately started sniffing my elbow. One of my cats never really cuddled with me much. He would hang out near me and sleep in my bed at night, but not cuddle. Then my daughter ended up in the hospital for a whole month because of complications from a surgery. I came home every few days, and stayed overnight at home maybe 3 or 4 times, but I didn’t like to leave my daughter for long. There were still two people at home, so it’s not like he was without humans during that time, but ever since I got back home, he’s soooo cuddly with me. And he can’t handle it if I shut myself in the bathroom. I have to let him in when I take long baths. If he can’t find me, he cries for me. I feel like I damaged him in some way being gone so much but I do enjoy the cuddles. Cats are definitely loving creatures.

Overall caring for a cat can be very involved, but I can see how cleaning a litterbox can be considered easier than taking a dog for a walk and picking up after them.

And will adopt abandoned kittens, or if a new mother is not doing well. Most cats in Australia don't like catnip. Because they are descendants of a small group of cats that don't have the gene.

Purring me might be a self soothing technique for a cat, but I also find it soothing and relaxing. I especially did as a child. We got our first cat when I was 1. She used to nap with me in my crib (my mom thinks partly to get away from my sister). As my sister and I got older she still slept with one of us at night . If we woke up for any reason she almost always would climb into that person’s bed. I remember waking bad dreams and her getting in bed and calming me. Often times when she slept with me she would be purring. She’d also purr something when we were hurt and upset as she tried to comfort us. So I associated purring, particularly hers with sleep, a calming and relaxed environment and safety. And all these years later I subconsciously relax when a cut purrs

You can actually get cat milk replacer that is safe for cats. Any pet store will have it. But yeah cow's milk, no. Don't ever give that to a cat, especially young kittens. If you have a problem with cats scratching things, get better scratchers for them to use. And just keep their claws trimmed.

They say cats aren't that social, but everyday my family's cat, Puma, meows loudly at the bottom of the stairs even if she has food, water, and a clean litter box, when that happens we just assume she wants some attention.
She also is just fine with dogs. Sure she doesn't LIKE them but she certainly doesn't HATE them or is afraid of them, if anything our dogs are afraid of her.
Our dog, Tank, that is a mix of a whole bunch of dog breeds such as a tiny bit of Mastiff, Boxador (Boxer and Labrador), and maybe a tiny bit of pit bull (but most likely mainly Boxador, we aren't sure since we got all of our dogs from shelters or humane societies) is absolutely afraid of our cat and he can't stop whinning when in the same room as her (then again he is just a big, sweet baby that loves attention!)
Our dog, Rusty, who is likely a mix of a bunch of different shepard-like dogs but mainly Australian Shepard is totally cool with our cat, there is little to no contention between those two, but they definitely aren't like best friends.
As for our big white dog, Luna, who, we think, is a purebred Akbash (Akbashs are kinda like Great Pyreneeses excet with shorter hair, longer legs, and a slightly leaner body), well, she just gets really excited and curious around cats. She doesn't hurt them or chase them, but she wags her tail and perks her ears up in interest. Puma isn't the biggest fan of it.
Anyway, all of our dogs except Luna have all lied on the same bed or couch with our cat, so I know dogs and cats aren't sworn enemies. Same thing went for our last dog, before he, well... Passed away

As for the "cats are low maintenance" myth.
My wife and I have a cat who is just over 6 months, she got fixed a month ago, and we got an instantpot. But the cat has been terrified of the steam that comes from it. Turns out, the stress she got from those things coulve led to an upper respiratory infection or worse (if they had a heart murmor). Also, cats need excessive playtime at a young age, or else they play with your feet and bite as they would with other cats (we got our cat at 5 weeks and she was already weaned, her siblings were adopted before her so she was the last one, mom disappeared for at least a week).

Also cats need more love bc everyone talks about dogs being man's best friend and a hero but cats can be very helpful when it comes to emotional support, cats can instantly tell when their owner is hurt it upset and will immediately start to lick and fuss you to make you feel better and although cats may not be as strong as dogs they are very good at alerting you if you or a family member is in danger
and cats are very good with directions :)
Cats have probably suffered a lot more than dogs bc not many ppl like cats and their are way more stray cats on the streets than dogs

    A shorter version:
*#16 Cats always land on their feet*
(Cats do not always land on their feet, if they fall from a window etc they will most of the time die or suffer serious consequences)
    *#15 Cats aren't affectionate*
(Cats love their owners but just show their affection different than dogs
*#14 Cats can thrive on a vegan diet*
(Cats are carnivores and need meat to satisfy their nutritional needs, their stomachs also aren't build to digest plants)
    *#13 Cats have 9 lifes*
(They only have 1 life, and need things neccessary like medicine, good food, hygiene and love to live it happily)
*#12 Cats purr when they are happy*
(They often purr when they're happy, but may also purr when stressed. They purr to comfort themself)
*#11 Milk is a great treat for cats*
(Most cats are lactose intolerant, milk can cause them to vomit, have diarrhea, upset stomach or gastrointestinal problems)
    #10 Declawing is not harmful
(Declawing is torture for your cat. It could be compared to cutting of)
*#9 Cats are cold and aloof*
(Cats are independent but that doesn't mean they're cold or aloof. They weren't first breed to spend much time with humans, so they're often wary of strangers or new experiences as a way of self-protection)
    *#8 Cats can't be trained*
(They're not as easily trainable as dogs but can be trained)
    *#7 Cats are nocturnal*
(Cats are crepuscular, they're mostly awake at dusk and dawn when there are better hunting opportunities)
*#6 Cats are low-maintenance pets that don't require much care*
(Although they're Independent they can also be delicate, and still need treatments, socialization and physical activity)
*#5 Black cats bring bad luck*
(Fur color has nothing to do with luck, this is just a myth)
    *#4 Cats don't like dogs*
(Most cats and dogs do not see each other as competition, and can actually get along very well)
    *#3 Cats absolutely hate water*
(Many cats are actually fascinated by it and like to play with it. They just don't like being submerged in water, mostly because water weight the fur down and makes cats feel cold)
*#3 Cats can see perfectly in total darkness*
(They have superior ability to see in near darkness, they cannot see in total darkness)
*#2 Pregnant women cannot live with cats*
(Just don't let them clean cat poop with bare hands and they'll be fine)
    *#1 All cats love catnip*
(Not all cats respond to catnip)

That first one about cats falling is more serious then the video says it is. I've seen instances of a cat jumping down from a height just under 6 feet (~2m) and breaking a foot. People should keep that in mind when allowing their cats to climb in high places or using those kitty lounge things at greater heights in the home. Personally I would keep the cats from jumping down from anywhere from over 4 feet to be safe.
Also the one about cat's being slightly harder to train than dogs is a bit different in my experience. I've actually found cats to be easier to train than dogs. With a 16 year old cat literally taking only 2-3 days to learn a trick through positive reinforcement. Where an adolescent dog takes a week or two at the earliest. The other difference is I noticed my cat was very interested in learning more complex tricks. For example I taught my cat to shake hands for a treat in about 2 evenings. By a month later they could know the difference between left and right, or even using both paws in one of my hands to stand up on their hind legs. Not bad for a geriatric cat. I was finding my cat was only limited by the physicality of her age and not the mental complexity of the challenges. She actually enjoyed the challenges and would do them more for the experience of being with me than the treats themselves. Cats love the stimulation and bonding. So definitely consider training your cat to do simple tricks and then branch off if they seem interested in more.

My cat isn't affected by catnip. Thank God, cause she's hyper enough without it. 😂

I’ve heard that, for many people with ADHD, caffeine functions the exact opposite way it does normally, making them sedate. Maybe your cat has some sort of feline ADHD.

I've known my whole life that myth number 4 was false as I had this cat and my grandparents had a beagle dog and the 2 were inseparable besties
Edit: the cats can't be near pregnant woman is also false as my mom had 2 cats (one after the other) during her pregnancy with me and I even grew up with one of them for a few years

    Some others
-"Cats greet each other by bumping noses." This myth amazes me. It's obvious they are smelling each other. Cats smell everything they "investigate".
-"Cats have great vision." They actually do not see colors as good as humans and also everything more than five feet away looks blurry to cat.

And cats don't need as much care as dogs do (in terms of cats cost less money bc they can walk and some pee themselves [cats that are outdoor cats]) but they do need mental and emotional care, of you got your cat from a shelter then you have no idea what the cats been through so they do need care but they are slightly cheaper to maintain
