This is an often-overlooked film, building on suspense and character development rather than outright horror/monster. I do like the clash between the scientist and the rest of the people involved. James Arness played the Thing and would later go on to fame playing Marshal Matt Dillon on the TV series Gunsmoke.
No it’s not a shapeshifter in this movie they didn’t have the tech in those days. On the other hand the John carpenter version is in line with the original book

WOR - 9 from NYC used to show this every New Years Eve in the late 50's and early 60's. That's where I first saw this.
