  • "The Thing from Another World" is a classic sci-fi thriller directed by Christian Nyby. The film opens with an Arctic research team discovering a crashed spaceship buried in the ice. They unknowingly thaw the alien pilot and bring it back to their base. As the team tries to communicate with the creature, they realize it is a menacing, bloodthirsty plant-based life form. The climax escalates when the creature escapes and wreaks havoc in the isolated outpost. The scientists, led by Dr. Carrington, want to study the creature, but Captain Hendry insists on destroying it. Tensions rise as the creature picks off the team one by one, and paranoia sets in, unsure of who might be assimilated. In the gripping finale, Hendry and his team ingeniously trap the Thing in a greenhouse, setting it ablaze, and eventually destroying the alien. The surviving scientists finally find relief as they witness the creature's demise, realizing the terrifying danger they had faced.

You do know that the attempt to burn it is unsuccessful and they electrocute it, right? And noone is assimilated (that ha0pens in the remake) they're just killed for their blood, right? Did you even watch the movie?!?

Simulated I thought that was only done in John Carpenter's movies I didn't know they did that in this movie too 😳😳😳😳
Sorry to say but they did not kill it by setting it on fire they killed it by electrocuting it at the very end 👏👏👏👏

Obviously terrible practical effects aside, the dog shit acting is what killed the '51 version. I thought It'd be a classic horror flick but my expectations after watching the full film was met with disappointment. I almost fell asleep while watching the entire thing, literally.

Both are based on the same short story "Who Goes There." The more recent movie could do the kind of special effects the original called for; the 1951 version based its terror on our fears of an invasion over the pole and the sense of our Communist enemy being less than human, lacking emotions and having no purpose but the spread of communism.

@@bradleybarnhart4188After rewatching this blurb again, apparently not! Also, assimilation was never a factor in this film; being murdered and drained of blood was!😅 I absolutely loved this original.

@Justanothingness I was referring to the original. For 30 years, the original was listed as "the Thing" and just since the 1980s, has it become known as "The Thing from another world." I'm too old to change. BTW, there are 2 movies named "The Thing" (1982 and 2011). IMHO, they both stink. Enjoy yours, and I'll enjoy the 1951 version.

I agree; the remakes were just plain awful, even the Russell version. The acting was better in the '51 version and you didn't need extra gore or added scenes to the original.

@Justanothingness As I said, The Thing From Another World" was always listed as "The Thing" until probably the late 1980s. I am quite aware of when the gore fest "Thing" was produced as well as the prequel "Thing" from 2011. The original article was about the 1951 film, so I assumed everyone would know what I was referring to. Clearly a wrong assumption.
