Your comments about art and the art world are spot on. Although I am not an established professional artist , I am an artist that is working and many times struggling with my art. As a realist with inherited and self-taught techniques I have entered and been rejected from art shows in the past just to find out the judge is a contemporary art professor that leans toward exactly what you are explaining about contemporary art. I have shown my work to other professional artist and been encouraged at the level at which I can draw and paint. My goal is to continue to work on my artwork and enter some local shows. Your honesty and candor about painting is encouraging and will help me when I am frustrated with my work! Thank you for the wonderful insight to which I have tried for years to understand and explain. The playing field just needs to be on level ground for all. Love your work!

Entering shows can be a learning experience. And your personal developmental growth comes from months and perhaps years of practice. There are as many variants in artistic styles as there are in handwriting. I have had paintings rejected from one show and winning prizes in another.
Your local library should have a number of art books for you to learn about different art movements and trends. After all, it was not that long ago that impressionism was misunderstood. SW painters' color palettes were considered garish.
Perhaps you could enter a painting into different categories. A still life doesn't have to be a floral arrangement or fruit. My best advice to you is to keep on painting. From your comments, you are already well on your way. Locate subject matter that you find most interesting. Perhaps it is textural elements, color, architecture, seashores... don't be afraid of experimenting and try to paint or sketch daily.
