American orders in forgotten Mayan language in Mexico?!

  • In Mexico I spent some time learning the Yucatec Maya language, which is indigenous to the Yucatán Peninsula and has been spoken in this area for thousands of years by the Mayan people. Even though lots of people still speak it, the younger generation is forgetting it and it was really interesting to go around and try and speak what I could speak. If you are interested in learning to speak the amazing Mayan language and help preserve Mayan culture, or just if you want to learn Spanish online or in-person with good local organizations, you can check out the schools I learned with here:

There’s more than one dialect and some regions can’t understand the others language. This is because natives were decimated by the Spanish and catholic priests and were forbidden from speaking their native tongue along with practicing their religion. This caused the isolated groups language to develop differently. What’s worse is even now folks that speak a Mayan language deal with prejudice and and even regarded as an embarrassment holding the country back. But a white guy speaking it is cool, lol, seriously. A lot of Red Cross and Salvation Army foreigners learn it and fall in love with the culture. Side note, Germany has one of the only texts containing ancient history and language along with many artifacts they refuse to return to Guatemala and only agreed to return them as of 2021 but I’m not even sure if they’ve fallen thru. Where Dr. Henry W. Jones when u need him 😢

Maya is not a forgetting language. You can argue its dying sure but far from forgotten. And also not every brown person in Yucatán is mayan. Indigenous ppl like everyone often migrate for various reasons. There are ppl that migrate to Yucatán to make more money in touristic areas. So its possible she only knows Spanish. Its possible she also speaks náhuatl or zapoteco or mixteco or insert one of the various indigenous languages spoken in Mexico.
