- Law enforcement officials say they see the biggest spike in deadly drunk driving crashes on New Year’s Eve and are urging people to celebrate responsibly.
This year, 1,000 people have been arrested for driving under the influence in San Diego County. With a busy weekend ahead, city leaders and law enforcement are pleading with people to think twice before getting behind the wheel.
District 7 Councilmember Raul Campillo and his wife, Nadia Farjood, are among the many calling on San Diegans to be safe this weekend.
Just before Christmas, the car the couple and their two-month-old baby were in was struck by a drunk driver.
“It was a shocking experience to live through," Campillo's wife Nadia Farjood said. "I've never heard a sound like that. It felt like a bomb had struck our vehicle we had spun around into oncoming traffic. And our two-month-old son was screaming in the back I don't think I'm ever going to forget his face."
“It’s still having an effect today," said Campillo.
The couple says they’re grateful to be alive to share their experience but says no one should have to go through anything similar.

You wouldn't put up with someone indiscriminately firing a gun on the roadways and DUIs are just as likely to kill.

There's no security feeling in this country anymore. Yes, people do road rage, shoot, stab people. They let sober hit and run drivers go after hitting multiple vehicles. The solution is to ban cars. This would be like the thinking of those whom are trying to ban an item that can be misused to commit ill acts.
No matter how many times people are told not to drink and drive they still do. That's why dui checkpoints should be everywhere.
Should be nowhere. I don't drink and drive so why should I be pulled over and treated like a criminal for doing nothing?

And yet I had a friend that tried to keep his girlfriend from leaving in the car because she was super drunk and he got arrested for kidnapping and a bunch of other stuff and now he's on parole for the next 5 years.
Only 1,000 people arrested? That leaves about another 99,000 plus folks who managed to evade law enforcement. Need to have more enforcement and some stricter penalties. It is well out of hand in San Diego County.

Politicians only care about this stuff when it happens to them or someone they care about! We've seen this over and over and over again. The simple fact is you need police to police the drunk driving the reckless driving The criminals out hurting people the drug dealers the PEMs etc! California stood up very clearly against the police! This is just another example of not only how the politicians don't care until it affects them but how we shouldn't have been defunding the police in the first place if you want some change that's fine let's give him some more training let's weed out the bad! But what you don't do is treat them like crap because the simple fact is they're there for a reason it's a public service for a reason! And this defunding the police movement hasn't worked for anyone except for the criminals which again break the law that we're all supposed to follow! I don't understand why people don't choose a designated driver, call Uber or a cab or a family member to pick them up! A DUI can ruin your life, It just isn't worth it!!

That's because the laws are too lax and hitting people in the pocket book is the only way it seems to get peoples attention and making a second conviction a felony just like petty theft first one is a misdemeanor second conviction is a felony.

I've said this MANY times , suspend d.l. for 1 yr. for first d.u.i. , revoke for 10 yrs 2nd offence , prison time for 2nd , 20 yrs prison d.u.i. w/ injuries , death penalty for d.u.i. fatal . Death sentence carried out within 1 day . No languishing in prison for 20 yrs !!!!!!
My wife’s first husband was killed by a suicide drunk driver who drove into him 90 mph. The 22 year old had called his 15 year old girlfriend that had broke up with him, threatening, “ He would kill himself if she didn’t get back with him”. An hour after she hung up, he drove into her husband’s vehicle 90mph, and survived. He got a broken back, and 30 days community service. That was one year after Candace Lightner’s 13 year old daughter was killed by a Drunk Driver. Candace Lighter started MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driver’s.

When I lived there there was said to be a "curse" where the Trolley was always slammin' into specifically WHITE cars. I saw at least two of em myself though.

Yeah, that was my exact thought too, when she said she's never heard a sound like this before, but it felt like a bomb had struck their vehicle. Don't bomb explosions sounds very loud? LOL!
She could have heard bombs going off on TV from news footage or other sources.
@@carlv8168 Yes, bombs are loud but it is the best description someone can give when they have been in a car accident. Think of several tons of steel, plastic and glass colliding at high speed and the sound of the collision is a fast, explosion type sound that is sometimes followed by skids and screams. If you have ever been close by when a person has hit the cement after jumping from a building (a suicide), the sound can also be described as an explosion.
She probably saw it in a movie. So what. Why do you keep justifying members of a certain persuasion getting in their vehicles inebriated and deleting families in the process? It's machismo to you?? It's stupid. Like many other things they do.

I don’t understand ppl who risk their lives & others when we have Uber & Lyft now. There’s even free services out there. 1000 arrested for DUI is insane to me. Our courts need to do better as well. So many repeat offenders because they can. Sad

Way more people die by drinking and driving than because of firearms. Yet nobody wants to put a stop to it. Up in the Mid Atlantic are where I live there are Wawa super gas stations with large indoor convenience stores. They have added drinking sections to their indoor areas. Think about that. A gas station, that you have to drive to, has an indoor drinking section.
Just like a bar, you have to drive there and back. You are not allowed to be walking on the side of the road if you've been drinking. It's illegal. So a gas station that serves alcohol would to me seem like the worst idea ever. But state regulators in Pennsylvania thought it was a great idea. To be traveling and stop for drinks with your family waiting at the gas pumps. 🤔

No, it’s an automatic felony offense & only an attorney can have it drop to a misdemeanor, the case can cost a minimum of 10K, & on the record for seven years with the court & three years with the DMV for a total of ten years for first offenders.
I don't think migrants do though. They just go back across the border.
