Man there is a LOT to this one.
A little life advice: If your relationship is "on the rocks", a marriage proposal ain't gonna fix it. There were a LOT of red flags for their relationship:
1.) Being told they were going on a hike and not bothering to get proper shoes for it was a sign that she didn't plan on dragging this out. She planned to complain the whole time, stated she'd rather be watching a show she was streaming, and get the proposal over with as fast as possible.
2.) She KNEW he was going to propose, and STILL acted like a b*tch the whole time; she didn't even bother to consider his feeling or the effort she put into this.
3.) Constantly throwing a tantrum like a toddler; placing the blame, throwing things, etc.
But what hit hardest about this story was the exchange of:
"I know she's terrible, but I can't just leave her."
"Then you'll die."
THAT! That is hardest truth of an abusive relationship. There comes a point where you need to decide what's more important: keep trying to save someone who refused to change, or saving yourself. Please PLEASE choose yourself because there is a difference between helping someone and feeding a leech.
I'm 100% sure she was cheating. Constantly texting, ignoring her boyfriend, having the audacity to ask for the ring, most likely so she could sell it or kerp as a trophy when she leaves him. Too many red flags.
I love stories where th "monster" isn't actually the monster. Bonus points for the heaping helping of "don't let toxic relationships hold you in a terrible place"
Me to they are my favorite. Shows the unknown isn't automatically bad ☺️
The title should be: "If you want to propose to your girlfriend, bring her to a cave"
That way you'll know what you're getting into
Ah, it seems "Ian" is one of the Fair Folk: Specifically a Tommyknocker. They are known to live in caves and aid miners, but hate whistling and swearing. This one was alone and very lonely, so our narrator's small act of kindness made Ian pity him.
I really thought that Ian was their would be child...
So that's why he wouldn't give his name
I think this might be the Night King that is in the form of a white haired, albino kid that "likes" some humans, but kinda goes around disciplining his followers when they eat or attack too many humans, but always says "i didnt save you", after he helps humans. theres a couple of other creepypastas about him. this is the only one that didnt outright have a monster he was "visiting"

When the little boy asked the question about whether he had seen his partner at her most stressed makes me think back to that "Oh!...Oh Jamie" from the main character's friend at 1:40 and that maybe she wasn't sounding disappointed about wanting to get married first but because she already could tell what kind of girlfriend he has and she didn't want him to propose to her
Most definitely. The fact that he took so much abuse without snapping back shows how high his tolerance for awfulness had become. He probably could not see what was clear to everyone else: that his girlfriend is the worst.

I love the lessons in this story. I appreciate the way the author explains relationships. If you don't truly know someone, you're jumping in over your head. It's not your job to put up with nonsense. I could see this child as being some kind of guide too. The child kept telling him, "Do you know the way?" He wasn't understanding what that actually meant. Sometimes you have to walk away from people even if it hurts. This story hit home in many ways.
Also that you can't save someone who will just drag you down with them.
What a terrible woman. She didn't deserve him at all, and yet he still loved her.
The story was really nice with the little hints dropped that he needed to find himself in that cave and break away from the baggage that was his "girlfriend". If he actually went through with marrying that beast he'd be much worse off.
Sometimes we need to be more self aware and pay attention to our surroundings, and the actions of people around us in order to make the right decision and separate ourselves from terrible people
Interesting take on the horror of being lost. Remember not to lose yourself while finding your way.

This story does a great job at portraying exactly how an abusive partner acts. Legitimately hated her, well done
I like the metaphor in this story. I too had to leave an ex behind in a cave of misery. I tried to help them out but eventually had to accept that deep down they didn't want to find a way out.
The real plot twist was the fact that Ian was a tsundere the entire time.

@Morgan Pauley It’s a character trope in anime/manga. The type of character that covers their feelings of affection with anger/insults/coldness; they generally get flustered and lash out if their affection starts to show (Ian yelling and storming off when it becomes clear he enjoyed holding hands).

Ian, the "monster," was so cute being embarrassed he actually HELPED someone rather than whatever his MO would usually be. Omfg, I need more "monsters" like him.
I had a feeling he was the Silver King when he came out of nowhere and got excited about holding hands. The hair and eye change at the end definitely confirmed too.
That's the true horror right there; "Oh I may look like a ten year-old boy, but I can give you the experience of a ten-thousand year-old man!"
Lonely demon child gives quality relationship advice
This has hardcore "SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL!" vibes from Avatar: The Last Airbender & I love it lmao. While the way out wasn't strictly love-related, both of them would've gotten out if they trusted each other and loved each other enough. The girlfriend kept fighting, had a bad attitude, and is now stuck in the caves forever, or at least until she truly believes that the path is the way out. Good story, 10/10

He picked an odd place to propose and the would be fiance doesn't seem to be into him at all.
The main character missed so many red flags: the girlfriend, the mysterious kid and the mushrooms.
Someone should have warned the main character not to trust strange kids in caves.
As the story progresses, I feel like getting lost in the cave and all the dead ends were a metaphor for the main character's loveless relationship. Then, the story confirmed it.

@@tailsfan23new I'm not exactly sure, based on some stories I've listened to its an entity that looks like a child and observes or occasionally gets involved with supernatural situations or places. Not even sure if there's one Silver King or multiple ones.

Ian was some kind of fae, probably a tommyknocker considering it was a mine. He wouldn't give his name because names have power, he liked the Narrator but he wasn't about to give him power over him
Actually the kid is a fae, but is some sort of a king, I think reincarnated as a child, there are few other stories with him in which he takes down some pretty powerful creatures, but for some reason he is not allowed to intentionally save humans, I guess because they are not under his domain, however he can bend the rules sometimes and saves some people "unintentionally".
"That'd be a pretty good place to do the deed."
Me: "uhhhh, dude. You could NOT have phrased that any worse."
Y'know, you can tell how much you like someone by how strongly you feel the urge to check your phone while around them.
So if she's checking her phone *constantly*, even in a cave where there's likely no signal, she's clearly 100% done with him.
The Ape Caves in Oregon are very interesting if a bit horrifying, experience. There are parts where if you are claustrophobic you will find yourself panicking. Also, if you see a random kid somewhere they shouldn't be, disappearing around shit, you should probably go the other way. Then again, shit like this is why I always carry a satchel of sea salt and iron shavings. xD
The fact that she is lost because she doesn't believe she can get out was a good touch... but the creepy kid is still creepy AF.
Shoot I didn't know about any good cave exploring spots when I was out that way. I would have liked to see them. Oh well. Atleast I got to enjoy the blackberry weeds I MEAN bushes while I was there. lol

It’s always the one who’s abused that proposes too. I once had a friend who’s been in an abusive relationship for years, and she was panicking at the idea of no longer being with him, so now they’re engaged.
@@megamovieman101 yeah I've seen this a few times, and it's always really upsetting. It's especially bad where I live, since it's a very culturally-religious place, where (heterosexual) marriage and starting a family is basically seen as the most important thing anyone will do in their lives, and even though none of my friends are part of the dominant religion, that expectation still rubs off on people, and everyone is in this rush to get married before they turn 30 (if not 25), even if it means being with someone who you aren't actually compatible with, or who is straight up a piece of shit.
To me, it should go without saying that if you're already having issues just casually dating someone, becoming legally and economically bound to that person (let alone when kids enter the picture) is only going to assure that the next few years, decades, or maybe even the rest of you life turns into a living hell
If you pay attention early on, it's made pretty clear that she has been distant or exhibiting a negative turn in emotion for some time now, like it's one of the first things the protagonist says, well before the partner starts acting out or anything, and that this is his reason for proposing.
And it's not just bad writing or weird characterization, either, because a lot of people think this way, that forcing a relationship which is showing early signs of possible incompatibility into a higher stage of "seriousness" is going to magically fix things, rather than almost certainly make everything worse (if not immediately, down the line)

This "scary story" hits different after having another discussion with my partner where they convinced me to stay in our relationship and give "us" another chance after admitteding to knowing they were emotionally abusing me and always knew despite gaslighting me.
