Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This CZcams channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

I can't help but think that because the Attomax went so much higher in the air, and still around the same distance as the ProV1, that the Attomax balls could gain an extra 20+ yards at a lower angle of flight.
Yea I reckon it would take a complete club refit to get it suited to the ball flight
Yes, this is true. If the Attomax were hit at a lower flight, they would be going further.
Good point. Maybe if Rick was to hit 10 drives each with a lower lofted driver the Attomax would come out on top.

Two points: if the attomax goes so much higher, it could be that with a differently lofted driver they would go farther in average. Also, I saw there was quite a strong wind. If the attomax goes so high, it will spend more time in the air and higher up, the winds are typically even stronger. So with headwind and your current driver, they will take a double punch, while if you did the same test with wind from the back, they would profit from the situation. So, loved the video, but I am not 100% convinced that this concluded the story once-and-for-all :)
Good points, would be nice to get a more scientific/thorough test, but I don't think Rick is the guy to do it. I'm sure there are some very scientific golfers out there - Bryson Dechambeau would be perfect if he wasn't spending all his time being a pro!

Or retest this with no winds, since the higher ball flight obviously got screwed.
The fairways are always the hardest in the winter.
Uber amateur golfer (sub-talented enthusiast) and please excuse my ramble.
This channel is by far my 'go to' and most enjoyable by far. Covers all aspects of the game, and I mean all aspects. There is not an episode that I don''t pick up something that I can/have applied. How to stop slicing, which irons, how to use the dam things, distance vs club - I can go on...Rick explains it in a way that the common wheel can understand and not in a 'pro-to-pro' way many other channels narrate. He is also humble and recognizes errors in his play and how he would rectify, again many other channels would never go near this OR even show the pro golfer making anything but a perfect shot. That my friends is why Rick is the best. 100% relatable.
I love seeing the different ball reviews, not just the ones you can go get in the shop. Maybe make it a yearly thing where you seek out the most expensive and review them?
Try the cheapest balls with the cheapest clubs against their market opposites

Nice one Rick! What was really interesting for me were the distance groupings, the Attomax was actually seemed more consistent, all kind of in that middle distance range, whereas the ProV's had 2 in the short "band", 4 in the middle and 3 were the longest.
I thought that aswell. I'd actually love to see what the soft ones are like. Don't think its very fair to compare one of the softest balls on the market with a brands hardest ball.

Love this test and also reading the comments. Interesting how the Attomax went higher. A lower ball flight may have matched the ProV’s distance. I don’t think the Attomax would go farther though. Rick’s GC Quad machine proved that too.

Thanks for the review Rick. Very interesting. But I have enough trouble justifying the purchase of ProV1's when other ball give you less distance but that only results in a club choice for your second shot.
I love how at 4:12 Rick gives the middle finger when saying, “not many people are going to give $200 for a box of golf balls”….😂😂

Shouldn't the hard golf ball be compared to the ProV1x? higher launch off the tee, more spin, etc. Curious if the softer version would perform better compared to ProV1s

I would love to see a side by side comparisons between new Pro V's, Kirklands and just random "FOUND" balls. Most of us who love your channel, are very average golfers and we all have balls in our bag that we have found in the woods during rounds and we all have balls plucked from lakes or bought from the big tubs at used sporting goods stores. I would love to know how much performance we sacrifice by going cheap and how much the elements actually affect the balls.

You turned me on to the Vice and it is so close to Pro V1 and the price is right. Have you ever tried the STAFF (Wilson) golf ball? It is a harder ball but the stopping power is Crazy!! Just curious on your thoughts.. Thanks Rick!

I could see these balls going further in the right conditions
First things first, if you invite me over the pond for a round of golf I’ll look for those balls you lost😮 Second, I don’t see mentioned in the comments about the quality of the box. I have to say who cares about the quality of a box and whoever saves them?? You also talked about some people like “gold clubs” and looking good. I have to say we all to a point like to make an impression because we buy the latest clothing and hats hoping to play better golf😳😂😂 Maybe they could sell them a little less expensive if the put them in a plastic bag😮😂😂 Love the video as always.
Maybe to get the desired distance you would have to use a lower lofted Setting on your driver since they are going so high
Rick, why would you not just drop an Attomax and a Pro-v1 from the same height on a hard floor and measure how high it bounced back up? That would be an easy test to see if they really are more bouncy/springy than a normal ball.

My Dad used to tell me about a Dunlop Golfball back in the 70’s to mid 80’s that was a wound golfball that had a steel ball bearing in the center of it that was wound with rubber bands. He said those things would fly when hit with a persimmon or laminated maple driver. Then Dunlop just stopped making them. $20.00 a ball is crazy expensive.

If the Attomax balls go so high, can you crank down the loft of the driver to get it to fly lower, and hopefully farther?

Golfing in Williamsburg VA today - losing golf balls IN the fairway because of the leaves on the ground. Had a hard time finding one ON the green because it was underneath a leaf that blew onto it. I can't imagine losing a $20 golf ball. I will be on the watch for one of these "in the trees" - interesting review.
You need to start doing regular equipment tests again. I always looked forward to your opinion on clubs.
Maybe a 8° driver ???? If with the same fly higher than V1 .......
Thanks Rick, can't you just to a static bounce test and measurement? Also why not adjust loft and spin characteristics of the driver to suit/optimise the flight, that flight is so different? Put a lower spin and lofted driver on, and the Pro V1s will be trounced (10p bet).

Maybe using a the same driver with lower loft, you can achieve longer results with the attomax.
Imagine that soul who finds that ball and has no clue how expensive it is. Then they loose it on the very next hole.
Cool video as always Rick, it looks like you're in the UK? Height in autumn is a distance killer, even on the fairways, balls just plug with a higher decent angle.
Could you check inside on your GC Quad and crank up the sunny weather and show us the results pal. It may well be a fairweather ball.
I'm looking for a ball that flies farther and straighter with less spin off the tee, better feel and short game touch and a truer putting roll on the green. Oh wait, that's every ball.

If they were true and you went by the manufacturers spiel alone, then you would never buy anything but their cheapest box of balls, as it would be pointless, as their different ball offerings are ALL fantastic at EVERYTHING!!!

That's interesting because I find I hit a titleist velocity about 10 yards longer than a pro v1, so these £200 balls aren't even as long as £25 balls... would be an interesting test to see them compared to the cheaper balls on the market

I've found the same thing, at least with iron shots / approach shots.
@@swandizzle8503 I do agree though, swing speed is a big factor. I just realised how arrogant my previous comment was... sorry. The difference for me is I carry my drive a long distance, with a pro v1 I get almost no bounce. With a velocity I get at least a hop forward. These £200 went higher than a pro v1, which did spark my interest because my ball flight is already high 🤣
You noted that Attomax ball went much higher. I can't help but wonder if Attomax used a lower degree driver on their machine during their `testing`, and then used the same lower loft for the standard brand golf balls, thus reducing carry distance

I might if it was also guaranteed to stay in the fairway. On the other hand, I don't like hard golf balls now. I used to use Top Flite golf balls way back when I had a persimmon driver, but can't stand to hit Top Flites with my relatively modern driver.
@@bkbinj6320 I have a 6 handicap and still don’t use pro v 1’s or those top notch crap. It honestly doesn’t make a difference. Most days I play with the same ball (lately I been using callaway super fast or Taylor made tour response). I think most golfers who use expensive balls just want an ego boost. It’s like the guys with double digit handicaps that play from the blue tees…it’s an ego thing.
I will say, the course I play is pretty challenging and I know all the miss spots so every weekend I find quite a few of tp5’s, pro v 1’s, callaway chrome soft….I’ll use them because they’re free🤣 but won’t buy them.

Now you put out compliant Attomax ones at Pro-V1 price you have good competition...
if they get more flight i would like to see you hit them after adjusting your driver to get a similar flight pattern. it seems to me that if you hit them close to the same length, you most likely lost a lot of potential length due to ball flight height.
Video was really a low key plug for the Pro V1.

The reason why I love your channel - exposing the conmen. Not that I would ever have bought one. It sounded like you were hitting a stone with your club. You didn’t mention it but I would have thought that would be felt to some extent in the hands on striking as well as in the ears.
LOVE these videos. Thanks for taking one for the team Rick! I would never spend that on any balls. I can't even stomach paying $60 canadian for pro v 1's. I usually go for the $30-40 box of Bridgestones or Srixon. I know they'll be all gone in about 6 rounds anyways

@@26japrey yeah. I mean I always game the Pro V's and other fancy balls that I find in the thick rough, water, and under trees first , but when I run out of those I only play the Kirkland's. I heard the new Aren't as great though, I guess they listened to too many scratch golfers and pros and made the ball harder and less spinny to account for their faster swing speeds but like, really. Those guys are playing Pro V's etc al. Anyways, so it's an asinine design decision to me when your average 15-40 hdcp+ golfer needs the softness, forgiveness, and boosted spin to keep it in play.

From what I saw was that wind blowing.Was that wind blowing against any because higher ball flight would definately shorten the distance.

It's possible they create more spin than the prov1's and therefore require a lower loft, maybe give it a go with the LTDx LS or Stealth MAX, the massive height will definately be losing difference on these balls, so if they are similar to the prov1s now, I wouldn't be surprised if they could actually go further
interesting video but there was strong wind you were hitting into. If the Attomax went double the height then it was susceptible to more of that wind for a longer time thereby affecting the distance at a greater impact than the ProV's.
While it's always fun to watch your vids this is far from conclusive given the conditions.
