Good analogy... an espresso in that local, stylish, impeccably clean, coffee shop, where actual Italians have theirs on the way to work and the tourists don't know exists.
I started playing the dirt series with Dirt2. 2 & 3 were obviously not sims, but they weren’t full arcade either. You actually had a challenge on some of the tracks with narrow roads & steep cliffs. The cars behaved differently from each other. Dirt Showdown knew what it wanted to be & it delivered on it’s derby inspired races. What happened to you Dirt?, why have you strayed this far?

People really wanted many DR1 features in 2 though, and we were disappointed by things like no hillclimb, poor tarmac physics.... etc... still is the best dirt game to date I believe...
I played Absolute Drift years ago, and loved the simplicity of it. It felt like a game that wanted you to "just drive". Experiment, find out what works, and find out what doesn't work. The graphics are simple and clean... And the soundtrack was some great hypnotic Liquid DnB from just two artists I hadn't heard of yet. I loved Absolute Drift. When I finally got around to playing Art of Rally... I was immediately reminded of Absolute Drift, and figured out pretty quickly that this is the same developer(s). Art of Rally plays like an extremely pretty sequel to Absolute Drift. Again, you're encouraged to "just drive", but there's a huge map to explore this time. Ones that look great. I didn't know I wanted a sequel to Absolute Drift. But Art of Rally is exactly what I wanted.

100 plus hours in Art of Rally in just over 6 months. Dirt 5 was a waste of my money and I only spent 5 hours on it and havent touched it in years. Art of Rally is an instant classic!
Thank you for your video. I remember when I was totally into Colin McRae 2.0 on the PS1. That game was pure joy for me. Now I have discovered ART OF RALLY and for the first time that exact same joy is back. Plus an awesome soundtrack to boot. Wonderful!
DIRT 5 is meh. 100% agree with that. But comparing these 2 is pointless. DIRT 5 doesn't even have Rally mode and is purely arcade racer. As someone already pointed out a beter comparison would be Art of Rally vs DIRT Rally / DIRT Rally 2.
It shouldn’t be at all surprising that a game made by a single person, fuelled by a passion for the subject matter is better than a factory production line, designed by committee game, made by hundreds of people who were told to do it because it’s their job.
When you breakdown a game, ultimately it will come down to gameplay, if you make a game with really nice controls + handling and good replay value, the game will last forever, graphics are not that important, they only impress but won't add to the quality of the game.
Dirt Rally 2 is not an arcade game, it is a serious sim racer with setups, tire choices and whatever. AoR is just an arcade game that lets you race around some awesome environments but doesn't try to achieve realism in any way.
Dirt 5 is just the worst possible result of the decision to split off Dirt Rally as the hardcore sim and make numbered Dirt games a excessively flashy, arcadey experience. Dirt 4 was okay, the driving still felt logical and rewarding, but was still notably easier than Rally 1.0 Dirt 5 feels like Dirt Showdown, just prettier, with better Rally cars. Just a friggin mess.
Dirt 5 has motorstorm DNA in it, it definitely wants to be that since well... most of the old evolution devs pretty much worked on it, the only thing is it just can't because of multiple reasons that is and that's only sad thing about it
My only complaint about Art Of Rally is that the soundtrack is way too chill and doesn’t capture the feel of the game (sending it through corners so ridiculously fast that a tree almost murders you) other than that it’s perfect About to unlock Group B and have been driving some of the cars in free roam. Think I’ll main the Hammer V3
I think Art of Rally is more akin to Dirt Rally 2.0 They're both awesome and they have similar mechanics, yet different environments, cars, and driving camera angles My pc may not be able to handle Dirt Rally 2.0 but Art of Rally is definitely in my top 10 gaming experiences
Thanks for your amazing review and comments. Less is more, new gen games lack content. I have a problem with the Art of Rally. Very often an indicator in the shape of a wheel appears on the left of the speed gauge and punishes me for some kind of driving mistake I cannot understand. What the hell is it, it's driving me mad!
Wouldn’t Dirt Rally 2 have been a better comparison? I agree with all your points but Dirt 5 is practically Forza Horizon 5. Both are on the more accesible side (to put it very nicely)
I dont like dirt games that dont respect to format of FIA Rally. You drive against time...not other cars on a closed track. Art of rally has more respect for the sport.
You should really try out Rush Rally 3 and Origins, Cheap extremely fun rally games made by one very skilled dev. it's the best set of rally games on the Switch, Andriod and IOS, and soon coming to Steam. always being updated one coming very soon with more cars tracks

I really wanted to like dirt 5 but even for a casual game it is too easy and dull. I played for about 10 hours in a weekend and I was disappointed. Imo AOR is just a better game that is more worth any money you spend on it.

Art of Rally is just such a "Feel Good" game, It takes quite a bit to get the hang of it, which I think is a good thing. Dirt 5 Is just.. meh. There's no accomplishment to it, all you do is press the gas peddle and go.
Why aren't you comparing Art of Rally with Dirt Rally/2 ? They are both 'sims', not simcade as in the 'Dirt' games. Maybe rather than try to cause controversy just be honest about the whole scenario and match like with like. Even if they look nothing like each other they are both trying to simulate rallying. IMHO they both do a decent job of it!!!

For something that’s only 3GB (on Xbox One), Art of Rally is time well spent. Definitely worth going for 100% game completion.

Rallisport Challenge 2 and Art of Rally are my favorite rally games.
Why not compare to Dirt Rally 2 instead? Dirt 5 is not really only about pure rally like AoR is.
