  • What is the most difficult motorsport question in recent times...? There's a good chance the burning question, especially motorsport related, is which car is better out of the Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer EVO.
    This video tries to show you how special both cars are, and indeed how close they are in every way with these ultimate AWD cars - with a light hearted drag race
    Which is better for you the Evo or the Scooby (Subie)?!
    Paul Woodman and Tiff Needell take out the Subaru Impreza WRX STI Cosworth CS400 and the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X FQ400 for possibly the ultimate AWD head to head, with a [fun] drag race between the cars at the end.
    Huge thanks to Bradley and Matthew Carr and also BunningGarages.co.uk, Wolverhampton Subaru Specialists, together with Island Garage for making this happen - plus our dear old friend, Steve in his 500+ bhp monster!

Moving the brand to a crossover SUV....and after dropping the Evo. Sadly, there is nothing in their lineup that isn't boring AF now. I will say that the 4g69 is sturdy though, my ex ran her Eclipse bone dry of oil, to the point one of the plug gaskets melted a bit, and I have put 30k more miles on it (with heavier oil and additives), and it still runs well, despite oil pressure lights at stop once it is warmed up. His car felt dead, didn't handle anywhere near what my car can do even with 4 passengers. Evo is definitely better on the performance side and the STI may be better for an all around fun daily driver, some feel it looks better too but I prefer my X. I only want performance out of my car so with the goals I have it has to be an Evo. In a couple weeks my car will be making 500+whp as well :)

      subaru has been offering a CVT on their base model WRX for some years now. clearly they are steering away from true performance 4-seater fans for some dumb reason. EVO has true torque vectoring so it definitely feels different in a corner. WRX STi has something close to an ABS that kicks in when cornering and they have the audacity to call it "torque vectoring" lmao.
      just btw while 500hp is nothing to the old unbreakable cast iron 4G63, i don't think it's particularly healthy for EvoX's aluminium block 4b11T. the fun of EvoX is in the corners. i own a MY14.5 Ralliart with the same engine (although different turbo when stock. mine was single scroll but i swapped it for a twin scroll from a wrecked EvoX last year) and none of my local tuners i talked to recommended going beyond 300KW (400-ish bhp) with it. mine now is at 223KW (stock 177KW) and i'm super happy with it. when i've saved enough money for a new daily driver, im gonna get my Ralliart fully rallycross compliant. wide body kit, rally susp, mudflaps, rollcage, window reinforcement and the lot. the twists and turns and the edge of grips are what's fun for me. not sure if tuning an aluminium 4cly 2.0T 4WD to be more drag oriented is the way to go when there are so many good iron block V8 RWDs for just that purpose.

    • @mannyrivera6723
      @mannyrivera6723 Před 5 lety +3

      The stock block 4b11 is definitely not as strong as the 4g63 but it can still handle that power just fine if tuned right with the tq in the safe zone. There's stock block X's with upwards of 700whp, so it's capable of making power, for how long that's another story. For me tq won't be an issue because my motor is being built as we speak, still stock head except for cams and springs. I wanted a car that could be as fast as super cars and also handle well, not just be a laggy highway queen so that's why I went with an EFR Twin Scroll set up, it has amazing spooling characteristics yet is capable of 750whp on e85! I think I will keep it around 500-600whp on pump gas tho once it's all done but at least I have room for more if I want in the future

    I think the Mitsubishi looks better VS the Subaru for this year. Objectively, it's very impressive how the Evo also makes so much power and torque with 500 cc of less displacement. The Evo also has the more focused racing interior. Transmission wise if the Evo is the manual 5 speed, then the STi takes that category as the STi is well known to have a very robust 6 speed gearbox. Sound wise, it must be given to the STi in my option. Handing likely goes to the Evo as STi's are know to understeer from factory unless they have some aftermarket suspension upgrades. Full disclosure I have a tuned 2004 STi but can admit the facts!

      The hatch STi's actually look way better in person than they do on video or in pictures. When you see them in person you can notice the wide wheel arches they have. They're wide cars that have presence on the road. And in the gunmetal silvers or black, also the WR blue, they look good. They seem to suit the darker colours for the hatch. Although it did take a long-time for them to grow on me, and they still aren't my favourite year model, I think the hatches are still rather good looking. You can get the same gen STi in sedan also (that came out a few years after, it's the same front-end, same gen, just a sedan variant). I actually prefer that gen than the current gen (current gen looks too Evo for me). But that's Subaru for you, I never like the current gens, then they grow on me years later.

    • @jamesmedina2062
      @jamesmedina2062 Před 5 lety +1

      I actually favor the WRX in pearl white or blue and the charcoal grey in the video doesn't do justice to the car. Also I agree that the new ones looks very bad. The hatchbacks definitely look good in the wild. And they sound great.

    • @Jez4prez1
      @Jez4prez1 Před 5 lety

      @@jamesmedina2062 See the new STi S209 that is being released in the US market? Man, I don't like it at all. Look at the front fender, the design is so clunky. The new gen is ugly / awful appearance wise.
      And even with that S209 I saw various videos / articles saying it's the fastest STi ever released, but they really meant to say it's the fastest released in the US market. Because the Cosworth CS400 in this video is still faster, which was released in the UK market. The CS400 is highly desirable now. It's def one of the best special edition STi's ever released, and it really has become the benchmark for special variant STi imo.

    The only thing that could seperate those two from each other is by letting every individual who owned both cars for a decent anmount of time decide which they liked more in ways of aerodynamics and handling etc. This way we could atleast get a clear overview of the gravitational stuff.

The Evo is faster when everything is in perfect running order, but that doesn’t take into account how drivable the car is.

    Thank you for an entertaining program. Coming back to the question which of them is a winner is a tough one to sort out because as it was mentioned they seem to be inseparable due to motorsport competition throughout wrc history. back in the day Tiff Needell and Mr Jason Plato threw Mitsubishi evo X fQ360 and normal subaru impreza wrx sti hatchback head against one another in similar conditions. Mitsubishi emerged as a clear winner since stock wrx sti hatchback had immense lift off oversteer tendencies mid corner and the 41/59 torque split whilst in sport mode sent even more power to the rear axle and the rear end grip was generally relatively poor compared to Mitsubishis combination of a furthermore electronically enhanced 4wd system. Mitsubishi 4wd system is unfortunately less demanding to driver due to the multitude of electronical innovations like mitsubishi active yaw control and it managed to put power down more efficiently than stock subaru sti. Faster isnt always better. Driver imput is vital to our skills. Older subarus tended to understeer and that is why at higher speeds especially in low grip surfaces the body balance was much more stabile. This why i think subaru had to give their dissapointing new hatch in the hands of cosworth to make it as capable as the best last performance mitsubishi lancer of all time. This is what happens when cars are designed at first to the road and are not directly chassis wise rally bred. And In the case of a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Cosworth CS400 the body control is back again- and no wonder, every bit of the unsprung mass and performance oriented components are completely different because cosworth rebuilt it. And overall in this case the overall winner has to be the WRX STI Cosworth CS400 since it doent have that overly safe mitsubishi 4wd and manages to be more fun with one of its mechanical slip differentials.

      Hi Sander - thanks for watching and for the comprehensive response

    • @tonyb1223
      @tonyb1223 Před 5 lety +2

      Im not quite sure where you get the fact from that Subaru's understeer? If you are talking 90's models then yes, they were more prone to understeer, its not a bad thing if you know where the limit is.
      On the newer cars (2003 JDM onwards), they pretty much eliminated the understeer with the A-DCCD and the 2005 cars had revised geometry AND yaw sensors to improve on how quick the car could correct itself. You could also switch the A-DCCD to manual mode and have some tail end fun without the interference of the electronics.
      So on the handing note, Evo's upto and including the 7 were noted to be the better v their Subaru counterparts (also noted by Subaru drivers), from the 8 onwards the Subaru had the advantage and was acknowledged (even by racing drivers in Japan where the Subaru was quicker and handled better than the Evo), to be the better of the 2.
      You also have to remember that the only official Evo in the UK was the 260, which was basically a detuned JDM for the EU market, the rest were JDM cars where as Subaru actually produced a car for the EU market (the only exemption being the 22B and in some part the P1 which was based on a V5 STI platform but had no JDM counterpart). The more modern JDM STI's (MY03 onwards) are all 2ltr twinscroll cars with different internals and quicker steering racks over the EU/US market vehicles and are deemed the better and more reliable car.

    • @powerswearingfluids
      @powerswearingfluids Před 5 lety +1

      yess, you seem to know your thing- that was exactly my point that older subarus like the frogeye and b22 where more precisely prone to understeer but at loose surfaces the actual balance of the car needs to be a bit more stabile so it was a good thing and that is why i dont understand your debate. And onwards 2003 if i remember correctly sti versions had 5 way electronically adjustable center diff that made things good even at tarmac- My point was that There was just a bit of an issue with a boxer engine and with the elements of the awd (departure rate)- sudden change of body balance at speed. Story goes that obviously subaru concentrated on worldwide market so in development process they tested the 2005 wrx sti high speed stability against a 3 series bmw so that it would be stabile enough for regular blokes who want to fill their dreams. Because the boxer engines pistons move side to side and therefore the center of gravity is already reduced they found out that on high grip tarmac the pendulum effect was too great for an everyday motorist so they had to move the engine forward a bit. So the 2005 sti got an intended 60/40 Front/rear weight distribution and despite it having a clever torque adjusting differentials the highspeed handling understeer effect was not ideal but it was still a great car- epic car infact. But 2011 sti manages to be neutral at wherever you drive it.

    The Evo is a better looking car, but the Scooby sounds better. They both drive great. It's such a hard call... I say just restore a 2005 Sti and have the best of both worlds. New intake, exhaust, injectors, fuel pump, boost controller and a chip and it'll make more power than either of these.
