Please download the original tune recorded by Billy Bragg & Wilco so you can play along after you watch this short video. I'll teach you everything you need to play this tune from start to finish. It's REALLY simple: memorize the 3 chords and the sequence they follow (A-E-D-A) and check out the strum pattern I'll teach you. A little practice and you're good to go ! I have been trying to learn this classic track since I came across this chart, in an episode from the TV show - NEW GIRL, a year and a half back, I guess!

I play it a full note down in G. Jeff Tweedy plays it in A with a capo making the cord shapes in G. I for one find it easier to sing it than how Wilco plays it.

Great tutorial! First song I've been able to play and you made it really easy. Can I request another wilco song? Someone else's song is a great (and seemingly easy) song, but I'm a beginner and cant quite figure out how to strum it and there's no tutorial! The song was used in the popular video game Team Fortress 2 so you'd get plenty of views from people trying to learn it if you chose to make a tutorial for it.

You should point out that the song is actually played with a capo on the second fret.
This video is intended for beginners. That's why I call this video series "Easy Guitar Play Along." These chords fit the song without a capo. It is possible to play this song with a capo and a DIFFERENT set of chords. But I'm keeping things as simple as possible for beginners. I've taught this song this way for many, many years and it's a GREAT teaching tool. But thanks for your input.
