  • It's Ged and Kelsie đŸ™‹đŸœâ€â™€ïž we are two Aussies enjoying the wonders of South America.
We have made to it Peru! We spent a few days in Lima to get ourselves ready for our MASSIVE adventure in a new country. After researching bus routes and reading a few reviews (too many) we decided to book a hop-on/hop-off bus tour with Peru Hop (no kick backs as yet
but always open to the idea đŸ™‹â€â™€ïžđŸ™‹â€â™‚ïž). The tour suited us as it sorted out our transport and we still had the freedom to book our own accommodation and stop for however long we wanted to explore each area. Anyway enough with technical and on with the activities!
From Lima we headed south to the seaside town of Paracas and stayed at the Kokopelli hostel (great party vibes
perhaps a little too great). After getting settled we went straight out to the National Reserve for a Golden Shadows trek. This trek goes for a few hours and was well worth it, with cinematic landscapes and breathtaking views from the cliff edge! Could have done without so much wind, but it comes with the territory (bring a buff). Spent the night partying back at the hostel (karaoke goes hard) which wasn’t the brightest move considering we booked ourselves a sunrise kayak the next morning to spot some flamingos.
Hangovers aside, the calm waters of the bay were very easy to navigate and it wasn’t long before we saw the pink majestic creatures that occupy the bay. Top way to start the day and recover before backing up for another night of partying (well for one of us at least).
For our last day in Paracas we took a boat tour of the bay and the nearby Ballesta Islands. Great opportunity to see plenty of wildlife (Penguins and Sea lions) but it was a long time sitting on a boat as the islands are protected reserves and not accessible. Back on dry land, it was straight to the bus and out to the oasis of Huacachina.
Surrounded by windswept dunes of the desert, the tiny town of Huacachina provided us with one of the best activities of our travels. Dune-buggying, sand-boarding and a perfect sunset all rolled into one fantastic tour (there are heaps of companies to choose from). Speeding over the dunes and sliding down them, trying to outpace each other sand-boarding was a heart stopper/starter - serious fun! Climbing one last dune to see the sunset on the oasis put the cherry on top of a great day. We spent an extra day in Huacachina just to relax before travelling to Nazca for a must do stop.
The Nazca lines are shrouded in a little mystery when it comes to their origin and purpose - which only adds to the experience. We stopped at a viewing tower (big old climb) just so we could make them out. You can stay in Nazca city and take a plane to view them also however it’s a little pricey and besides we were to keen to make our way to Arequipa (not keen for the 12 hour bus there).

Peru Hop is so great for meeting people! There is definitely a 'gringo trail' through Peru and Bolivia - we keep meeting the same people along the way - its great to catch up and swap experiences.

Hey John! Sorry for the late reply. Hope you are enjoying your trip. We used a global Esim with Airalo, which unfortunately did not work in Bolivia. I believe the South America specific one from Airalo does cover Bolivia.

I'm wondering if you could have gotten by with one less day in Paracas or if you needed all 3 days.

You could see what we saw in 2 days with out feeling too rushed. At this point in our travels we had plenty of time and we liked the party atmosphere of the hostel so we stayed an extra night. Should mention that there are plenty of other accomodation options that are much more relaxed.
