Thank you so much for this video. You confirmed some things for me. I was once facing the decision to buy the 14-24 *not 12-24 haha, and decided, after much research that all I really needed was the 16-35. Any time someone is thinking of getting into photography and they are on a tight budget I often tell them to grab a Crop sensor body, any will do and buy a 50mm 1.8. You'll learn so much with that lens and it will be with you right on through should you move into Full Frame. Few things beat a nifty fifty but in this video you got me thinking about it in an entirely new way. I'd never thought much of using it for Panos but now I can't wait to try. I did, like most eventually buy the 24-70 and I don't regret it for a moment but I think I'll start keeping my 50 in the bag cause I can certainly see why using that for Panos can reward a much better image. Thank you! I couldn't agree more regarding a telephoto for landscape. The intimacy of a telephoto comp is hard to beat. Lastly, the reason CZcams put me onto this video was that I just purchased the 20mm 1.8 for Astro photography and fireflies. I have a feeling the next time I leave to go on a landscape excursion my bag is going to be much much lighter because of your advice. The 24-70 and even possibly the 16-35 may be staying home and instead being replaced by the 20mm and 50mm. I'll however still be lugging the 70-200 2.8 Can't leave home without that one!
    Looking forward to more content

I am seriously blown away with how beautiful your photography is Attilio. It’s a huge credit to you, not just your photography, composition and editing skills but also that you make the physical effort to capture these beautiful scenes. The fact that you do this using the same gear I have sort of makes me feel depressed when I look at my rubbish photos 😂😂😂 However I take consolation that I obviously don’t need to upgrade my gear to the very latest super expensive gear. Keep up the awesome effort Attilio 📷

Having a limited budget I need a lease that does it all. I was advised to buy an inexpensive body and use my available budget on a good lense. I purchased a Nikon D3300 and a Nikon 18-140 lens. For under $1000 I could not be happier with the range of landscape photos I can take.

I am a little bit late with my comments. I just found your channel a few weeks ago. I am using, Sony's A6000 with two kit lens and Sony A7M2 cameras. Currently using the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 newer lens so, I am using it more often. Second lens I use is the Sony 70-300mm G 4.5-5.6. Not a G Master Lens! Don't have the money to spend on that one. Third lens is a Rokinon 14mm 2.8 not the best lens and no filter threads! Using the 14mm for night star and occasionally for a wide angle daytime photography. I have the Nifty Fifty 1.8 Sony lens. Got it on sale. It was half price. I don't use it that much! Now I am thinking to use it more after watching this video of yours! I have extension tube set for the Sony cameras also Amazon cheap. I would be interested in learning how to use Lightroom to make a panoramic pictures with the 50mm!
I also sent your CZcams links to my daughter. She has a Canon entry level camera. She shoots macro photography. I gave her my Sony A7R more manual camera and my kit lens. I am trying to get my daughter into shooting raw pictures with it.
Got long-winded! But I really enjoy your Videos!

I take many photos along my local, wild, coastline... and, perhaps surprisingly, I find my preferred lens is an 85mm prime! Sometimes I stick a few frames together for a 'natural' panoramic frame. Yeh, I know that no one asked. ;) Oh yes, I sold my Nikon "trinity" and replaced them with a few primes... I was very tired of inaccurate/unrepeatable auto-focus and a persistent muddy red cast in all Nikkor frames.

those are basically the 3 lenses I have used for years. My wide angle is 11-20 sigma so I agree with you. I only need to spend a fortune on filters but being retired I cannot afford them. Love you work.

  • @dennishardinglandscapephot3540

I agree with you about composing with prime lenses. I carry seven primes ranging from 12mm to135mm and I have used every lens but my favorites are 20mm and 28mm. I would suggest that you add 28mm to your bag.

  • @autofocusrossswansea9362

I get what you said about wide angle and the 14-24mm not easily being used with filters, but when I looked at the five or six wide angle images you show us here - there is no sign of a filter to my eyes - not a grad, and no polarizing (full water reflections) so quite honetly you could have stuck with your 14-24mm for those. I have. I also loved the lens so much, I pursued one of the filter kits (camdiox I think its called) and the ND, Polarising and Grad is a joy to use if a little cumbersome. It is a hobby, and once set up, this doesnt matter. Not too many landscape shooters arrive with seconds to spare (I hope). lol. Apart from that jewel in the crown 14-24mm Nikkor, I have the 24-120mm f4 for general purpose, which stopped down to f5.6 & f8 yields amazing results on a D810. I also got tempted into buying two Tamrons - the new 85mm F017 Macro, plus the 100-400mm long reach telephoto, and with that lot, I feel I have the solution to pretty much anything I encounter. Obviously, I carry only what I plan to need on the day, but often go walking with a friend, so I get to take a couple of extra lenses if he'll carry them! Great video, glad you found your ideal lenses, it took me 9 years and quite a few trips to eBay with the lenses I couldnt get along with anymore.

  • @jml7916

For E-mount, I use a Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 and I often carry my Tamron 35mm f/2.8 or Sony 50mm f/1.8. I have the 85mm f/1.8 but usually reserve it for portrait work. I am considering purchasing a lens in the 18-20mm range to compliment the excellent 28-200. On A mount (Minolta/Sony DSLR) I have an ancient Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4, Sony 50mm f/1.4, Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro and Minolta 100-400mm f/SLOW. The Sigma is a bit long in the tooth and flares like no other but used carefully it can make beautiful and very sharp photos. The other 3 lenses I carry are as good as they get. I have 11 or 12 A mount lenses but these are the ones I carry and use most for landscape.

I have just acquired the 20mm f1.8 for use on my D810. I actually sold the 16-35 f4 to buy it, I thought it was a vastly overrated lens, or maybe mine was not great, it seemed incapable to get infinity sharp. No problem with the 20mm, pin sharp, love it. I also have the 80-200 f2.8 ED, an old lens but so, so good. I also use the 50mm 1.8. I actually prefer the 80-200 for panos though, you get that lovely compressed space in a wide shot, it is like having a magical wide angle telephoto lens! I now have three lenses which I have absolute faith in.

I like your setup because there is a focus on lighter weight and cost. I've always shot m43 because I can carry the holy trinity zooms f/2.8 and each one is lighter than most FF primes. Affordable, portable, same light gathering capability, twice the DOF, and sharp even wide open. Not trying to do a FF vs m43 debate but most videos skip over the practicality aspects and only focus on specs...

I love this video. It seems with so many photographers recommend the majorly expensive lenses. Nice to see sensible suggestions. I also loved that you recommend the 50mm 1.8. Since I went full frame a year and a half ago just because my old dx camera died and a now friend offered me a ridiculous deal on D600 and was willing to let me make payments, even though we didn't know each other very well. (we were on a forum together). He even shipped it to me before I paid a single payment. Told me to take as long as I needed to pay for it. Since going full frame, I don't yet have a 50mm 1.8. I hope I can raise the money for one because 30 years ago when I worked in a camera store and made money, I had all kinds of lenses. The 50mm 1.8 was on my camera 75% of the time. Loved it. Now I'm disabled and struggling financially. But I hope to add a nifty 50 one of these days. I was surprised that you mentioned doing panoramic shots vertically. I tried this a few months ago and like it. Mentioned it when I posted the images, and now others are doing it as well. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

I used to use a Nikon 10-24 DX during my photo student days, but found that I didn’t like zoom lenses and only used the longer lengths so I replaced it with the Nikkor AF-S 20mm f1.8 as well. I have it mounted to the Z6. I usually shoot wide angle, unsupported, in the redwood forest and along the coast (I’m from Monterey/Carmel) and this is pretty much all you need for wide angle primes IMO. Also using a 10 year old 50mm 1.8G as well, but I take the new AF-P 70-300mm for the telephoto range.

Having seen you posting new video a long time, I hope you could bring me more idea to broaden my horizon to become a successful landscape photographer.

Good information. Although I use zooms for wildlife, my landscapes are 75% nifty fifty and 25% 24 mm on an ASPC Canon 80D.

Thanks for the instruction concerning the Nifty Fifty. I leave it tucked into the back of my camera bag instead of seeing its possibilities for landscape. Will start using it on a regular basis. Can you do something to reduce the catch lights in your eyes...........it's distracting.

My favourite landscape lens is my Sigma 18-35 f1.8, everything about the lens is perfect but for one teeny weeny thing. It’s designed for cropped sensor, fortunately I usually have my 7DII with me in case I see some wildlife when I'm out. The great advantage of disabilities, you can take two cameras because your mobility scooter carries your bag. My first choice lens when shooting film rather than digital is always my 50mm my favourite being my Jupiter 8 f2. Somehow it’s massively underused when shooting digital, I have no real reason for this except laziness. My most used lens across both landscape and wildlife is my 70-200 f4 IS, it is always either on my 5DIII or 7DII.
Personally I think it’s impossible to see too much of your images, especially your long exposures. They have a certain class that goes with their smoothness, I think a lot of this is down to your minimal composition and editing. They always look sublime. As always a brilliant video, thank you for sharing.

When I came accross this video, I realized I have all three of those exact lenses AND the D810. I guess I'm doing something right. I love your videos and your work... Keep them coming.

My wife just bought me the Nikon 20mm prime for my birthday yesterday. I did couple of quick test shots yesterday of a temple next to our condo, however it started to rain so I had i stop... I'm so happy and impressed with how sharp and crisp this lens is, I cant wait to get out into Chinatown when this damm rain stops...lol

If I saw a 20/1.8 for a good price I would buy it in a heartbeat. But I use the Tamron 17-35mm OSD. It's wonderfully sharp and clear. I shoot at 17mm mainly but 24mm and 35mm is handy to have.

Those catch lights are a little freaky. Holy cats those are some great photos. I started out with the Sigma trinity for my Sony. 19,30,60. I was never crazy about the 19 but then I had come to RAW from PS so I was a little disappointed with the output. I experimented with legacy lens and I still use the old Minolta 50,1.7. I got an expensive 24-70 but never really got to liking it before the camera fell over and the lens broke. I never replaced it. But when I got the 70-200 F4 it was like I let the genie out of the bottle. So these days, it's 16-35, 70-200 and what primes I decide to play with. Using a 6300 Sony. I like this guy.

  • @edc5338
    @edc5338 Před 5 lety

I have the holy trinity but use the 24-70 most of the time and also the 16-35mm. You are correct about the weight problem! I also have ,and sometimes use, have a Sony A6500 which is so nice to carry as it is very light , very sharp with vibration suppression and I have wide angle lenses for it although it is an APSC camera.

20mm vs the 24mm. You feel the 24mm is not wide enough for your land scapes on average? I am getting a crop sensor camera and I feel my lens quality option for the 14mm is not as pristine as the 16mm (the 24mm equivalent). There are also advantages of extreme sharp close focus, and f1.4 is even sharp on the 16mm, so killer for Stars. I am wondering how much I would be happy with the narrower view though.

    Hi,
your suggested 3 lenses for landscape photography are a good choice and I like them very much.
In my opinion, you can use the following lenses in landscape photography, which are relatively light, powerful and inexpensive:
AFS 1.8/24; AFS 2.8/60 and MF AiS 3.5/135. The 24mm lens is a real wide angle, resolution in the center and in the corners is outstanding, a bit better than the 20mm lens. The 60mm lens is a universal tool and is completely distortion-free. It can be used up to 1:1 and is uniformly very sharp at all apertures throughout the sensor. The micron contrast is sensational, but the lens hood must always be attached! The "old" MF AiS 135mm is super-sharp, very small and light and very inexpensive, AF is not required for landscape shots.
I would consider this trio of lenses together with a stable tripod, a reasonable tripod head with a cable release and a filter set a very good solution for landscape photography.
Many greetings from Germany and please have a look at more video
