    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety

      Yeah... it's a great fly! I hope you enjoy it! I just bought a scale to weigh my flies and discovered the sexi bomb is about 3 times heavier than a typical size 14 nymph with a 3.2mm tungsten bead! 😱 I knew I tied it heavy but that was funny to see. The sexi bomb weighs about 1.050 grams while my standard nymph is 0.350 grams. This early season a combination of that sexi bomb (point fly) at over a gram and a squirmy worm (dropper fly) at about 0.800 grams got me down in the deeper fast water and found some really good fish!

I do plan on doing a video for that this winter. Tying your own flies is crucial for me... I could never get what I wanted if I bought them. My favorite fly today is just a simple elk haired caddis they are one of my favorite flies😂 great video ill have to tie some of these

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety +1

      Elk hair caddis is the only dry fly I use for brookies. I tie it in a foam caddis version so it rides high and is bright for those turbulent brookie streams. The tying video is here czcams.com/video/HmqzGIcy5zo/video.html I do tie it slightly differently now though with a longer hook. I actually show the other hook model in the video but don't tie on it. It is the Tiemco TMC200R... the fly can be bigger but the hook is still small and hook up percentages are much better than standard dry fly hook on those small wild trout!

      Most euro nymphs are actually really easy to tie. This one is a bit more with trying to get the legs right but at the end of the day as long as they're hanging off the fly and moving in the water that's all the fish care about :)

I have been watching your vids to help me learn Euro nymph style of fishing as a trout flyfisherman I find this style very intriguing! I managed a couple of grayling today but sadly not on the sexy stonefly as the water was high and coloured so I had to go with brighter flies. However as soon as the opportunity arises the sexy stonefly will be back on 👍👍 Thanks for taking the trouble to reply I appreciate it 😃

      @@WhiteDogTrailCompany Definitely looking forward to those. I’ve been fly fishing and tying for a little over a year now and choosing flies has been one of the hardest things to grasp. Everyone says match the hatch, or the aquatic life in the water but I’ve found that’s not always the answer. I’ve had better luck staying in one spot and constantly changing flies until I’m able to find what the fish want, and many times the go for things that look nothing like anything in their environment. Any info to help make fly selection easier will have my undivided attention. Thanks!

      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety +1

      @@TDRRaptor With dry flies, match the hatch can be huge. But with nymphing... it is not! Turn over some rocks in your river and see what variety of insects you see. Then tie on some flies that represent the size and maybe color of those. I show it in Volume 1 of my Euro Series but will go more in depth on it in the video on fly selection.

    Using that as your point fly do you typically run 5x down to that fly? I try to usually run a lighter tippet to my point fly just in case i do get hung up. (4x to first fly, then 5x to point fly) So I only lose my point fly typically but if it’s that heavy would you worry about the 5x snapping when casting that fly? Thanks

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před rokem

      I typically use 5X tippet to both flies although sometimes I use 6X to both flies. I landed a fat 20" bow the other day on 6X with no issue. At this point I feel pretty confident in my ability to fight fish on light tippet with my setup. I also don't worry about snapping flies off when casting. A good casting motion will eliminate that possibility. My biggest problem is watching behind me and not catching trees! LOL I swear I lose more flies in trees than in the water....

  • @othonielvazquezdominguez3888

      Coiled leaders are for people who prefer to see the strike rather than feel it. I don't personally ever see myself using one. I used to use a color coded "hot spot", but many flies don't really look right with a hot spot. Now, I just put my heavy flies in a dedicated Heavy fly box.... but still some are tied with more weight than others and it isn't always that easy to just toss them in the air and see which one makes the loudest plop .... especially on the water! any suggestions?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety

      I just ordered new hooks myself. Going to try the Firehole 523 size 10. They're a longer style jig hook that look great for this fly. I think they'll end up being my go to hook for this and jig streamers! I've tried various hooks and have adapted the fly over the years. I like the 3XL hooks for sure. In terms of organizing flies by weight.. I'll use 1/8" beads and 5/32" beads so that is an easy way to tell. But if I have varying amounts of lead wraps and the same bead size I organize them in the box by weight. Either heavier at the top of the row and lighter at the bottom or I'll do an entire row of one weight and the next row of another weight. I just know where I put them in my box. I'll also squeeze them and I can feel how much lead is in them most of the time if I'm not sure.

(My knots seem to hold on everything else, but even when tying a fly... sometimes the thread slips into the eye of the hook). What is the best action fast or slow tip action

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před rokem +1

      Definitely depends on how you're fishing. On small streams for small wild trout, I want a slow action rod that bends almost down to the handle. If I'm on a bigger river where I have to make long casts a faster action rod will help you really punch the line forward through wind and get long distances. However, I really don't like how fast action rods fight fish... they're stiff and unforgiving. A slower action rod will absorb more headshaking and thrashing, protect lighter tippets and help keep fish hooked up.
