NLC Rejects 35 Percent Pay Rise, Insist On Living Wage

  • It's a tough time for workers in Nigeria, due to the harsh economic situation in the country. In the light of this, the Federal Government has acted on the report of the 37-member tripartite committee on new national minimum wage, led by Bukar Goni Aji, by approving a pay rise of 25 to 35 percent for civil servants across various consolidated salary structures. The government also increased pensions by 20 to 28 percent. But, what sounded like a cheering news is taking a different dimension, as the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC is rejecting the increase. The NLC insists on a living wage structure for workers, citing harsh economic realities in the country.

    These Journalists dont watch their own programs. NLC chairman came on their station today and said they didn't reject it. The increase is for people to earn what others civil servants have been earning. So he said it is not a wage increase but equalization of wages for others who had been earning lower.
    He said that the announcement as a salary raise is disingenuous because some workers wages will not be increased.
    Journalists should do more research before coming on air

    NLC should understand that it is not about increase in salaries. We should support the government in its reforms: aggressive farming, support to local manufacturers, foreign investment drive, etc. If we could achieve economic stability, one can comfortably live on a #50,000. monthly salary. But until then, we have to make some sacrifice. Emmanuel Atuchukwu

      Has the government shown concerted effort for a better Nigeria?If sacrfice has ever be made ,are not poor ordinary Nigerians there ones sacrificing?,while polticians are parading themselves in over starched babarigas and cruising in tinted exotic cars bought with tax payers money.Insincerity ,inequality and lack of empathy are part of what makes failure in government today.
      Can Nigeria government juxtapose the money spent on political office holders in Nigeria against what it spend on ordinary working Nigerians?Let's not be bamboozled by theories. Nigeria need to taken to theatrical room for critical deliberation as to way forward, this is the only country we have,but there is fault the governmental structure and bluepeint amongst others.

    Good decision by NLC and TUC , how cannot a new government be forward looking; and calculate a living wage, like in other good countries !
    110 % increase in the pay of legislators, while you are giving 25% , 35% to workers.
    How can workers be working, and their salaries, cannot sustain them for 2 weeks.
    Do you want them to be corrupt or sick ( mentally and physically) ?

  • @user-lb1qn6wf6c
    @user-lb1qn6wf6c Před měsícem

    It looks like the chubby journalist has a grudge on Ajero. The point he made against him is right. The NLC's president should have easily understood that this is just a pay rise for some civil servants but not a minimum wage announcement. He should have used the day to caution the government to come up with a reasonable living wage and that wage should take effect from May 1 as per the law. He missed this opportunity and focused on, to use the journalist's language, his "default" response.
    But the journalist's argument about "are you paying them from your pocket?" is so amateurish and immature. Government doesn't pay the public workers from its pocket. It is the money of the people. So everyone is equally owner of it. It is not something like a king rewarding its servants.

    Mr Jide is obviously analyzing with a view of pleasing the government over a shoddy job.Could he be eyeing an appointment in Tinubu's regime?Mr Jide, your analysis does not convince any one out there, 35% pay rise is grossly inadequate for Nigerians considering the galloping inflation.Politicains are living lavishly with huge payment and allowances,are they any better than the people who voted them?let's be fair,35% pay rise is a far cry from a living wage?A government that does not take the welfare of her citizenry into cognizance is failure.
