  • Today I'm talking about my luxury journey to getting offered my first AP Royal Oak watch. This story is filled with sexism and prejudice that I was shocked to be on the receiving end of in a luxury boutique. Hear all about why I am not purchasing from Audemars Piguet after being offered multiple watches.
    Here is the link to my husband's Porsche experience:

    Sorry to hear you had such a terrible experience. Sad to say that this isn't that uncommon not just for AP but across a lot of luxury watch brands. My wife had similar experiences as you when she'd go with me to shop for watches where the sales associate would only engage in conversation with myself or be dismissive to her. I also had aspirations to buy an AP as well but had really arrogant and smug service when I went in to my local AP boutique so I also vowed to never purchase an AP. My money is better spent on other brands that actually value me as a customer.

    My husband and I collect as a couple - his and hers watches - and have been to every major brand's ADs and boutiques - and have purchased many, many luxury watches. Of all of them, the ONLY one that treated us poorly was AP. I have no interest in ever owning one of these watches.

      1.) I love the idea of his and hers watches and 2.) glad that we aren’t the only couple this happened to! When I filmed this I had in my head that I’d look for a preowned one, but the more time there has been I’m just not sure I want to own that brand in any form; there are so many other great watches out there!

    Disgusting behaviour from the SA. I would be emailing his store manager to lay out the misogyny you were exposed to and why you will not be buying from the brand. If they’re never told the behaviour is unacceptable they will continue to allow it to happen.

    Sorry you went thru that. I had one of my houses built on my own and because of that, they thought they could mess with me. I proved them wrong more than once. 😊

      Good for you on that! I felt like animated Mulan at the end of the movie when she’s trying to tell someone about the Huns but no one will listen to her because she’s a woman 😅

    I'm not a woman and I've experienced this with multiple AP boutiques. I'm not someone who wears nice clothing and expensive jewellery (other than watches), so I tend to gauge how a boutique treats me if I walk in looking like I can't afford their stock. AP simply treats you like trash (or at least me) the moment you walk in and the watches aren't even worth the price. Yes the finishing of the case and bracelet is good but the movements are horrible in comparison. I suggest you look at brands such as Grand Seiko, A Lange & Sohne, Piaget, Bulgari or Van Cleef and Arpels. They all have beautiful woman's watches and I've only had good retail experiences with them.

      My dad has a grand seiko. I appreciate Piguet but the look isn’t quite right on my wrist. I’ll look into the A lange & sohne though as I’ve not heard of them before.

      My husband has some sort of people magic about him where he can connect to anyone. The SA thought he was the coolest person ever when he found out he uses his divers to actually dive.

      @accountingforluxury  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I also wonder if it was his lack of interest that made the sales associate pursue getting him to purchase a watch 🤔

    How incredibly disrespectful and cold! I don’t blame you (or your husband for that matter) for not wanting to buy from them. The way they mistreated you continually is way beyond the pale. I’m glad that you went searching elsewhere and I look forward to seeing which watch you eventually choose.

    I’m sorry to hear of your experience, but I would say don’t write-off the brand, but DO write-off that AD. Don’t let the ignorance and sexism of a few idiots over in Atlanta ruin your love for the brand. AP doesn’t know that that AD is making them look bad. I’d say reach out to your watch community and see who could recommend a good AP AD- anywhere in the country, and work that AD. Tell the new AD about your experience with the old one and let them know you’re serious about your purchase and that you want to build a relationship. The watch game is all about relationships and patience. Great video! Rock on!

      Thanks for the advice! I’ve fallen in love with a watch from another brand but I’m thinking about looking for a vintage all gold AP. I’ve seen a couple from my birth year and thought that might be a special idea.

      @@accountingforluxury ooh I like that! And yes, you’re right- there are a ton of brands out there doing amazing things and making some really cool watches- most of them with a much more friendly attitude towards their potential customers. Lots of micro brands making some incredible pieces too! I’m excited to see what you pick up next. I’ve subscribed to your channel so keep me posted! 🙏🏽😁🙌🏽

    your experience is so weird! usually ADs have the toughest time selling womens watches, they would make a guy buy the womens models as a bundle to get the popular sports watches

    At min 6:18 you just gave away why you were being ignored by the, I grant you, rude , salesperson. He could sense you were not going to buy the watch and was chasing the possible sale to your husband. Not very smart or subtle. Less misogynistic more chasing the buck.

    • @accountingforluxury
      @accountingforluxury  Před 6 měsíci

      I would agree about me not receiving an offer (which is why I mentioned what I did at 6:18) if it weren’t for my husband telling the guy he wasn’t really interested. To me this was much less about the lack of offers as it was the treatment from minute zero once I introduced ourselves. The two offers to my husband with none to me seemed much more about gender given the in store treatment, but maybe he really did think my husband would buy one anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

    What is the point of this video? You just said it yourself a lot of luxury is pointed towards woman you just ended up in watches who are pointed towards men for a reason. Thats like me going into a jewelry with mainly engagement rings for woman and complaining they are offering a ring to my girl instead of me. Somehow its only sexism the one way 😂

    • @accountingforluxury
      @accountingforluxury  Před 6 měsíci

      I was just very annoyed at feeling like I was not treated as a person (for instance answering my questions to my husband instead of to me). It wasn’t so much about my husband getting two offers as much as it was the way I was treated. I’d been talking to several women who experienced the same thing with AP so I’d had a plan to film this before the second offer came in. The second offer was just the icing on the cake leading me to film and edit on the day I did.

    • @accountingforluxury
      @accountingforluxury  Před 6 měsíci

      And sexism can definitely go both ways. I’m excited by a lot of brands starting to focus more on men’s though. Jewelry (with exception of traditional engagement rings) had always seemed so unisex to me that I was just really shocked.
