    Skookum means strong. The double play on the AF in the name is appropriate.

    Interesting that they would spec a 27.5 wheel and tire on a bike they're marketing as a aggressive fat bike. Those tires average over 1500 g a piece plus add in the added weight from the larger rims and longer spoke lengths plus being farther away from the axles which amplifies the peddaling difficulty even more. If you don't need extremely strong sidewalls you can find 26-in 4.0 tires at about a thousand grams a piece which is a full pound + lighter then the 27.5 setup. The 26-in wheel/tire provides more than enough rollover and float because the rollout (+/- 2230mm) is about equivalent to a mid-size 29er mountain bike tire which the industry standard for MTB tire and wheel performance. The shorter sidewall on the 27.5 would likely be stiffer than a 26er at the same PSI however one of the key advantages of a fat bike tire is being able to vary your air pressure sometimes as much as 15lbs to provide increased sidewall flex and greater float or less of each if needed. I've seen the cartoon graphics comparing the float or contact patch of the two different sizes and I'd like more information before I believe the 27.5 exceeds the 26-in tire by that much. Bottom line, I think the 27.5 wheel tire combo has a place in the fat world but if you want aggressive, fast cornering and handling fat bike tires, 26x4.0 is the best choice in my opinion. Don't be so quick to throw away your 26-in setup because of industry hype which I believe is pretty much what has spawned and fueled the 27.5 wheel and tire craze. Around 2016 Trek proclaimed 27.5 in tires are better and slowly but surely almost everybody just went with it. Thankfully there are some great CZcamsr reviews out there (including yours) that are being honest about the slow handling and difficulty in peddling of the 27.5 setup compared to the lighter and faster 26.0. If you want a larger tire diameter, more float and traction, you can always go 26X4.8 or larger. As I said before in previous comments , I believe in choice when it comes to tire sizes and wheels but the way the bike industry works, they need to sell more products and bikes and that means getting rid of last year's bikes and equipment and ushering in new stuff whether it's better or not. Unfortunately that could also mean the extinction of the 26-in wheel and tire if the trend keeps going the way it is.

    Need more skookum af videos please 🙏. Specifically dirt trails. Talked to Scott at corvus. Says he can build me a lower cost version with microshift advent group set for $2400 shipped. Very interested.

    Subbed for more great and informative content. I love fat bikes. I recently got my folding fat bike stolen. In search for a new one and I think the skookum AF will be it. Been debating between skookum af, borealis flume, mukluk, and beargrease. I typically ride to find bike trails, bike parks with jumps and berms, bike paths, canal trails, railroad trails, creeks, single tracks everywhere really. I just love going on mini adventures on my bike and will be using a proper fat bike for that. Which do you recommend for that? I’m really leaning towards the skookum af. It comes with great parts and good price because I’m planning to put a front suspension fork on the other bikes since they come with rigid one. I’m planning to put a cyc photon motor and use it as a Uber eats bike delivery monster. Would it be wise to do so?

    I just bought a Rocky Mountain blizzard and its a little slacker than the sookum and i have to say that on tight twisty snowy single track its hard to keep weight on the front tire especially with a 475mm reach ( L) but other than that its great . In the dirt its awesome, I almost like it better than my rsd 291 . Im thinking of slapping a suspension in the front and making it my daily driver. If i had the money the sookum would definitely be on my list .

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před rokem

      I'd love to try out a Blizzard, but based on the stack/reach I'd probably go for a medium instead of the usual large. If I were you I'd totally throw a suspension fork on it for the summer...it makes a huge difference!

      I contacted Corvus, they can work with on price by adjusting the parts. Give them an email. Scott from corvus emailed me “ i can build you a Medium Skookum AF with a Microshift AdventX groupset and Mastadon Comp fork for $2400 shipped.” That’s a really great price considering I was deciding this vs the mukluk ($1600) mastodon suspension fork ($500+) 27.5 fat wheels ($400-500).

    @mtbboy1993 Před 8 měsíci

    This bike sounds promising. Shame I can't find anything like this in Norway, I guess if I want it I have to order one if they ship internationally.
    Dlackes bike I saw sold in Norway is 69 deg. So not really slack.

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před 8 měsíci +1

      That's a pretty conservative head tube angle even for a fat bike these days. However, it works really well on most snow trails out there which tend to be more rolling and not as steep up or down. If you put a suspension fork on it, it'll slacken it out a bit which may help but it'll also shorten the reach among other things.

      @@RideYearRound seems like bes option is to buy something else the one you reviewef seems nice. As I already own a bike mad eby Nicolai, I would like to try a fat bike from them, but I see Nicolai did not update their fatbike, so geometry, sizing is horrible. So would hav eto b custom geo or a different brand. There's a lot of snow now, so mostly did city riding.

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před rokem

      Mastodon Pro has been great. The Comp is also pretty good, but the Pro feels significantly better to me. As far as the Wren, I’d probably rank them Mastodon Pro > Wren > Mastodon Comp. The only issues I have with the Mastodon is the price and the width can rule it out on some bikes.

      @@justgo4033Wren for the Win. I’ve ridden them All. If you ride technical trails then the Wren for sure. Especially if you are a heavier. I ran the 100 Mastodon Pro on a Trek Farley 9.8 and the FS Trek Farley the comp. I also had a Salsa Bucksaw with a Bluto . No bueno with that one when it gets rough. The Manitou Forks are great but the Wren is best when set up properly in the rough stuff. I currently have a RM Blizzard C50 with the Wren now set up at 130mm. Running well
