    Just realised I didn't even know who the women's champion was.

    • @jacobhawney
      @jacobhawney Před 4 lety +169

      It's because her FIDE ranking is 2584, which doesn't even put her in the top 300 active players. It would be nice if there were more high level women's players, but there isn't.
      Agadmator brought up that they are trying to equalize the men's and women's championship prize money, which is stupid. There is no such thing as the men's world chess champion. Magnus is just the world champion. If Hou Yifan could actually qualify for the candidates, she would have the chance to challenge for the title. The only reason that there is a women's championship is because no one wants to recognize that there is really only 1 quality, high-ish level female chess player in the world. I am 100% for giving women every opportunity to compete against the men, let them prove it over the board. To give equal money for demonstrably worse play is just dumb for the sake of being woke.

    • @Dromadairefever
      @Dromadairefever Před 4 lety +34

      @@jacobhawney Definitely not. You can also see this as a way to break the endless cycle where women are less representend in many aspects of our modern societies, which brings them to having less chances of sourcing great top level champions, which makes them less represented, etc. Then giving equal prize money can be a solution to promote equality, waiting for it to happen over the board as it would not otherwise.

    • @jacobhawney
      @jacobhawney Před 4 lety +71

      @@Dromadairefever I do not believe that system gender inequality is the reason that there are no world champion contender level women's chess players.
      All you have to do is look back at Judit Polgar. There is nothing holding women back except themselves. I believe we will have a day with a woman as world champion, they just have to grind like everyone else.
      Do you not think think that is Hou Yifan raises her FIDE ranking up to the high 2700s on even 2800 points that she would not be the hottest star in all of chess and pushed to the moon? She would get every sponsorship deal and would be a mega star. There are no barriers stopping her except her own play.
      This idea that women or whoever cannot achieve the highest levels due to oppression is just dumb. If you want it, go get it.

    Why would they equalize it? It's open vs women's chess, not men vs women. Making the price money equal would be like awarding the Europa League champions as much money as the Champion's League champions. These two players are around #300 in the world, and just because they're women they get the chance to compete for money men on their level can only dream of. And STILL FIDE will give them even more.

    I don't understand why men and women play in different tournaments. Chess is a mental game not physical one, why creating different rankings and tournaments? Isn't there anybody protesting against this policy?

    • @Hahahahaaahaahaa
      @Hahahahaaahaahaa Před 4 lety

      Because the number of girls and women that have access to chess in a meaningful way is still dwarfed by boy's and men's access. There should be no doubt that the greatest living female chess mind has almost certainly never been encouraged to play chess.
      So while there is an overall ranking, the reality is that regardless of how casual players might fair, at the highest level it's still just a numbers game that one sex has a huge leg up in.

    • @ntf5211
      @ntf5211 Před 4 lety +1

      ummm most tournaments are universal meaning anyone can play. Now the the thing is women are alot weaker in chess than men and their rating are way too low. Also the world championship is not exclusive to men its also for women if they're good enough to be qualified but so far they're too weak. Only one woman managed to qualify for the candidates in history. And its not like there is not enought women playing...there are literally thousands and thousands of women playing worldwide.

    Thinking calling the women looking angry is too stereotypical. She looks fierce, strong, ready to battle. Think we need more positive synonyms to describe the strong chess warriors we have. Calling her looking as angry is not fair to her. Just my two cents.

    '.' not sure about womens only chess prize being equalised, the investment is awesome but on the other hand it feels intuitively a bit demeaning to me if that phrasing makes any sense , like it would be awesome to see prizing for kids go way up too to promote the game on that front as well if that isn't already on a level
