The 2020 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 11-26 January. World Champion Magnus Carlsen again heads the field, which includes Top 10 stars Caruana, Giri and So as well as 5-time World Champion Anand. A lot of the focus will be on young stars - Duda, Artemiev, Xiong and above all 16-year-old Alireza Firouzja, who makes his super-tournament debut. As well as the traditional venue in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, one round will be played in the PSV football stadium in Eindhoven (16 January).
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Magnus Carlsen and Anand always bring out their best when facing each other
really, 2 of the best modern era players, anand however, slightly going out of his peak, needs some rest before coming back. I am hoping he will make it to candidates 2022
To me it seemed like Carlsen was being a bit lazy. If you only use half your time, surely you could come up with slightly better moves using all of it.
@@psychohist
Your opponent is allowed to think while your clock is running.
When you see an opponent is using a lot of time from their clock, it is almost always best to play good moves quickly to coerce a mistake. Then, after seeing them make a mistake, you can if you wish stop playing fast and have a think on your own time to win the game. Or you can keep playing fast, making your opponent play a losing position with almost no time on their clock. Both tactics work.
The one thing you should never do is waste your own clock time, giving up that advantage. Spending clock time on a turn is saying "I am 99% sure the move I have found isn't the best one here". If you aren't sure there is a better move, you are just being indecisive.
@@adcyuumi The person who is using less time is more likely to make the first mistake than the person who is using more time, as indeed we see in this game where Carlsen basically blunders away a pawn with ...d5. Classical time control is not like rapid or blitz; in classical, it's generally worth spending a few moments to double check your moves.
Exactly!

I'm a big boxing fan, and you have to wait years for the top fighters to face each other.
In chess however, they play each other all the time!
Chess cultivates your brain; boxing destroys it. It is called CTE.
Alan Villanueva chess just destroys people’s life and time. It’s called addiction.
There have been times when you had to wait for years in Chess. Carlsen is more willing to play than many past world champions.

Yeah, imagine you lived back then and waited for the Lasker - Capablanca match
When Anand and Magnus meet it always a great game.☺️

I loved the exploration of those ‘superhuman’ moves towards the end. That fork after Rook to b4 was amazing.
True... especially when you realize that if Black sends his king out and then withdraws it, White is forced to threaten the fork over and over, moving his king one step closer each time until it can guard the pawn and win. :)
These two really never disappoint!

No, after that move too, Magnus would lose a knight and Anand would still have a Rook
@@zombieprodigy9788 🤦♂️ Rb8
Rb4! Remarkable in its simplicity, yet requiring superhuman vision to see
Note: at 15:38 black can't take white knight on d6 due to Rb8
Also note: at 9:45 black queen can't take the knight on b5 due to Rxa8
One more time note: at 6:10 white can't play Bb6 as Qd6 will save the game for black
Also at 14:13 : Qxd8 is simply winning for white
Nice man, I was just wondering why black can't just take the knight with the pawn. Great find!

I think that Magnus was caught by surprise when Anand played Bishop d3 in the opening. Maybe we should consider this move in our own games!
15:38 Sorry may be I missed something but in one of the options you explored, why would the black pawn not capture the white knight if white knight were to move to D6 from B5?
Yeah . I noticed that too ....idk y I seen it like 10 times ..y can’t pawn just capture the knight
Because if black captures knight, then u can simply move rook to B8
Yeap got that thanks 😊

Agadmator captures, Magnus captures, and Anand captures our attention with another great game!
15:38 if pawn takes knight than rook to b8 wins. If rook takes rook than the pawn queens, and if knight takes pawn rook takes rook with check and forks the knight. Best would be bringing the king closer to the pawn and end up down the exchange for the pawn
Yotam Abady thank you! I was confused as why pawn wouldn't take knight there

“ Those engines are tricky bastards” - 😂
I believe at 14:27, there is a better move Na7. This threatens the rook on c8. Thus R e8, then c8 = Q Rxc8. Rxc8+ . At this stage, White has a King, a Rook, a Knight and three pawns while Black has a King, a Knight and four pawns. White is in a winning position and checkmate happens in 6 moves.
Don't overthink mate keep it simple, if Na7 then rook captures the pawn on C7
15:41 how is knight to d6 a superhuman move when there is a pawn at e7 defending it???
Good question I would like explained too if someone can explain that superhuman move
Capturing the knight would allow white to play rook to b8 which will lead to a rook trades with white pawn becoming queen. You cannot capture the pawn with black rook when the white rook is at b8 since the black rook is defending a check.
Kartikay N thank you!!!
@@vitalviral8865 the king could be moved when rook goes to b4 before...i suppose...or carlsen captures the pawn with knight in the first move after this?
@@sagarfred If I am understanding what you have written in the comment correctly then I believe both the possibilities have been discussed in the video with moving the king being the only good move after rook to b4.

4:36 can someone please explain how the pawn moved from A4 to B3?
En passant
'En passant' is a rule. Simply search it in google you will get better explanation
15:42, I’m definitely missing something obvious but why can’t magnus capture the knight with his pawn?
Rb8
it would have been a terrible mistake, Anand not only attacked the rook but also opened his rook line, so if magnus captured the knight then Anand would have place his rook just beside of magnus rook, on b8, and he would develop a queen and magnus would lost his rook.
and if magnus wanted to capture white pawn with his knight after anand placing his rook on b8 then anand would have took black rook with a check to both king and knight.
@@WSTRNS bro u write a lot to explain rb8😂😂
@@gameofday5299 it's chase bro, not pubg, so obviously there will be lots of explanation behind each and every move in mid and end game.
I think at 14:11, the best move for white is queen capture rook and give check. The only option for black is to recapture by knite and the white push it's pawn further. From here the pawn can't be stopped from promotion.. If you analyse effectively, At end white will have huge percentage of winning
Can we get a "captures, captures" counter for future videos?😂😂😂
beatiful tactical shot 15:38? knight can be captured by pawn.. am I missing something?
I think you missed rook b8 if knight is captured
ah, I agree
Anand is legend ❤️
Everyone tries to reveal what Magnus is preparing for the championship but he politely underplays and keeps it unraveled still to be applied as a surprise in WCC2020
15:42 idk what agad is talking about. If white moves knight to d6 then the e7 pawn captures the knight. There is no threat
After exd6 then Rb8 either wins the rook or allows white to promote the pawn
@@insertname252 thanks had same doubt
Then Rb8 promotes to Queen
@@insertname252 There isn't any choice since Rook and King are in the same rank. It'll lead to promotion
VK Payne you can take the pawn with the knight
Running final position with knight vs rook does not give a clear answer, I ran it on my powerful PC (newest stockfish) depth from 75 to 48 and at the point of 148 moves in, engine gives the position +0.8 but there is no clear contiunuation, just repetetive moves and any pawn moves result to disadvantage.

Why would Carlsen not just keep playing if Anand was low on time? Wouldn't it be smart to just coast on your 35+ minutes?

@@phpicker1552 Wdym doesn't need a win? Idk how these chess tournaments work since I'm new, and I see no reason why you wouldn't win. Also it's chess lol, what energy, what rest.
@@yellowtitan6040 This tournament last for 16 days I believe. Chess is a very mentally draining game. 16 days of hours and hours of mentally thinking takes a toll on players. Currently Magus is tied for 2nd, just a draw behind Caruana. I'm just saying sometimes, it might be better to accept a draw instead of playing on and exhausting yourself for the next day. Perhaps Magus made that judgement. This is top level chess. 35 minutes of time is well over an hour trying win when combined with both players.
What I'm saying is it is a possibility.
Hello Agad, a question, at 15.39 U put Knight to D6, but isn't the pawn capturing that Knight? Am I missing anything there, or a small mistake happnd frm ur end? A bit confused..
finally carlsen, finally somthing to watch.
after R-B4, black best is f5 to be followed by K-F7 (alt ending.. there was a previous Rb4)
