    The 2020 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 11-26 January. World Champion Magnus Carlsen again heads the field, which includes Top 10 stars Caruana, Giri and So as well as 5-time World Champion Anand. A lot of the focus will be on young stars - Duda, Artemiev, Xiong and above all 16-year-old Alireza Firouzja, who makes his super-tournament debut. As well as the traditional venue in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, one round will be played in the PSV football stadium in Eindhoven (16 January).
    The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. @@psychohist
      Your opponent is allowed to think while your clock is running.
      When you see an opponent is using a lot of time from their clock, it is almost always best to play good moves quickly to coerce a mistake. Then, after seeing them make a mistake, you can if you wish stop playing fast and have a think on your own time to win the game. Or you can keep playing fast, making your opponent play a losing position with almost no time on their clock. Both tactics work.
      The one thing you should never do is waste your own clock time, giving up that advantage. Spending clock time on a turn is saying "I am 99% sure the move I have found isn't the best one here". If you aren't sure there is a better move, you are just being indecisive.

    • @psychohist
      @psychohist Před 4 lety +25

      @@adcyuumi The person who is using less time is more likely to make the first mistake than the person who is using more time, as indeed we see in this game where Carlsen basically blunders away a pawn with ...d5. Classical time control is not like rapid or blitz; in classical, it's generally worth spending a few moments to double check your moves.

    I believe at 14:27, there is a better move Na7. This threatens the rook on c8. Thus R e8, then c8 = Q Rxc8. Rxc8+ . At this stage, White has a King, a Rook, a Knight and three pawns while Black has a King, a Knight and four pawns. White is in a winning position and checkmate happens in 6 moves.
