    The Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of the ten Great Walks of New Zealand. It's a fantastic option for beginner hikers, young families and those with a lower level of fitness, due to its ease of access, easy grade and proximity to major centres.
    Join me as I hike the Abel Tasman Coastal Walkway over 3 days from Wainui Bay in the north through to Apple Tree Bay in the south. In this episode I hike from the northern terminus in Wainui Bay through to Totaranui camp for my first night on the trail, before making my way towards the estuary crossing at Awaroa Inlet on the second day.

    This walk has a special place in my heart as I met someone who was also doing a day walk and we have now been married for 20 years

    A good place for you to be to recover from the Richmond Ranges. The Great Walks during shoulder season are beautiful and are popular for good reason. At present with such low air fares, how many could you get to? The Heaphy is my favourite and there is good track transport at both ends as have all the Great Walks. The Rees - Dart, accessed from Glenorchy has wonderful sub alpine scenery and is a good track even if not a Great Walk.

      I would highly recommend the Great Walks during shoulder season, as you suggested. In hindsight I wish I'd put the Heaphy on my list too, but at the time I was just focussed on getting myself out onto any kind of trail solo, and the Abel Tasman seemed to be the best option for that for me. All the tracks you mention are on my list!
      Also, air fares might be low from the main centres, but often flying from somewhere a little more accessible to Taupo is still the same as it was pre-Covid. I am, however, hoping to add at least two (possibly three) more to the completed list this year!

    Great to see you out there doing this hike! Can see the enjoyment on your face. 😁 We were going to do a day section of this when we visited the South Island about 18 months ago but it ended up being a very wet day so we hung out in Nelson instead. Not a bad place to be stuck though! Look forward to the rest of this series.

      Thanks so much, appreciate you letting me know your previous experience on this track too. You'll have to make a point of revisiting it!

    Thanks so much, am going to do this shortly, solo. So very reassuring. Would you mind turning your music down though. It’s hard to hear you. X

    great video! I've been thinking about getting a duplex or an altaplex for my TA Thru-hike, how do you find condensation with a single wall tent in NZ? condensation is the only thing putting me off a single wall tent. Thanks!

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 3 lety

      Absolutely no better or worse than a double walled tent in my opinion. If you're out camping, you're going to get condensation, regardless. I certainly didn't find that the condensation was so bad it was running into the bathtub floor of my tent. But don't forget I was also hiking primarily through the height of the NZ summer. In cooler and damper weather, it will be the same as a double walled tent and then you'll have to take precautions, such as making sure your sleeping bag or quilt isn't rubbing on the tent wall (otherwise it will get damp). The duplex was absolutely the right choice for the TA for me. Have you seen my full review of the tent? czcams.com/video/Ourbv5Spz24/video.html
