    This is a terrific walk. Did it with my family when my youngest daughter was 6 She walked all the way and carried her own sleeping bag. We tented so carried a fair bit of kit for 3 daughters Had glorious weather and finished at totaranui which we subsequently camped over summer for the next 8 years

    I felt compelled to watch this mutiple times. Inititially to send your closing words to my brother to vibe his day. But honestly, i have been watching your work go from strength to strength and im always in awe of how captivating your presence and efforts move me to my core. Honestly that final speech rocked me. The whole video is perfection. You're a true auteur. Thankyou for making the probably tedious efforts of getting the angles and editing and everything absolutley spot on. Absolutely inspiring. Much peace and love! Looking forward to your channel blowing up and giving you opportunities to go everywhere and experience all of it. Cheerio from a half kiwi guy from WA who is figuring out how to do as you do. Seriously, wow. Your work is above and beyond. I have much to learn. I truly enjoy your adventures, they make my week amd give me tools and inspiration to learn to live and love in and of nature. Thankyou. So much thankyou! ❤❤

    And? was operation Passion Fruit a success?
    Great video and a nice trip down memory lane. I walked the Able Tasman back in 2009. Was surprised how little I recognised until I figured out I walked it in the reverse direction. My main memory was a 4 year old Swiss girl crying out for her "Mutter" in the huts EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Go the camping option!
    Other then the mouse attack does the Durston hold up OK in "challenging weather"? It always looks a little too light weight for my liking.

    • @settohike
      @settohike  Před rokem

      haha operation passionfruit was a success (an expensive success :P) It's funny how much the track changes when you walk in the opposite direction. What a joyous core memory you have there! I still cant believe I had the campsites all to myself!
      It definitely holds up in the rain. Ive had a few nights where id say it was super windy, and it held up well so long as the guy lines were out/ the height was lowered a little so less wind gets underneath. It also has other loops around the bottom which you could bring spare cord/pegs if you needed. It hasn't been to any snow or tornado trips yet so I cant say on that part, but so far its been an amazing tent!

Yeah, I was really surprised by my reaction to be honest! I think it was on the harder longer days, I feel like you tend to bounce off each other and pick each other up, so if I was having a tough time of it, it was all on me haha.

    • @settohike
      @settohike  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thank you :) I’m so happy to hear it has inspired you! I use Methylated Spirits as fuel. Usually all the supermarkets will have it. On this trip I went to Countdown in Nelson. In NZ it’s purple coloured but in Australia it’s clear, so that confused me at first haha. They also sell it in hardware stores (like Bunnings) and I would imagine service stations would sell it as well. I’d say it’s easier to get your hands on then a gas canister! I’ve only ever seen it in 1L bottles so I will just put some in my little fuel bottle and leave the rest behind.

    I cannot understand why we are so retarded in France regarding hiking 😒 For sure, we have a lot of maintained trails but no campsites like you have in NZ or in some other places in the world. How does it work? Do you have to pay something, like an annual fee or a per-trek fee?
    Another (unrelated) question: why do go with your regular X-Mid instead of your newer X-Mid Pro?
    And before I forget: that video of yours was gorgeous 🤩

    • @settohike
      @settohike  Před rokem +2

      Oh really that surprises me. Yeah usually if a campsite has any kind of facilities like a drop toilet or water tank then you have to pay per site, per night. Sometimes per person, all depends on the different hikes. The Great Walks in New Zealand will always be a bit more expensive because of their 'status/popularity' Australia has a similar setup. Haha good spotting! My xmid pro is only fairly new so I didnt own it at the time I did this hike, otherwise I would of taken it! Thanks so much for watching! 😊

      @@settohike We also have campsites (named "campings") in France, but they are usually bigger, more structured, usually in towns/villages, and more and more filled with RVs rather than tents. Unfortunately I can't think of anything like you have, simple, and in remote places.

      Haha operation Passionfruit was indeed a success! (although an expensive success 😛 ) Its funny how a track can feel so different just by hiking in the opposite direction. That sounds like a joyous core memory to have haha I still cannot believe I had all the campsites to myself it was amazing!
      Definitely holds up in rain and i've also had a few nights that i would consider super windy, where as long as the guy lines are out and the height of the tent is lowered a little it was perfectly fine. Its also got a few other loops around the bottom that you could attach extra rope if you needed to. But if im ever in a more drastic weather i'll let you know :)
