Lifted 81 Subaru Offroad in Montana

- This is a video I made of offroading my 1981 Subaru GL wagon. I put a lot of time and money into this wagon. It never let me down and was a great first wheeler. Heres the specs:

Pretty awesome i have 3 of them.
I live in Bozeman. I had lots of modifications to the engine. Weber Carb, ported intake, full flow custom exhaust, accel coil and optima battery. I miss it soo much!!

Nice vid! The music goes with it incredibly well. I love the EA81-series wagon. I've got an '88 EA82-series GL-10 turbo that I'll be lifting 4" and putting on 27 or 28" tires in the near future
probably got better MPG cause of the nice clean intake and exhaust. LOTS MORE POWER TO BOOT!
AMC Eagle Wagon, my brother has one. 4WD on demand and viscous center diff if I remember correctly. Way ahead of its time.
I'm a Jeep fanatic (especially flatfenders), but I also love any kind of cheap offroader. I have a '91 Legacy sedan that I got for $50 with a crapped out rear wheel bearing. My plan is to fix it as cheaply as possible, put a set of 15s on it (creating clearance as necessary with a hammer & Sawzall) and go have some fun!
@X92Exploder Most 4WD Subarus from the '80s had low range built into the transaxle, but you can use a transfer case from a Nissan 720 in addition to that.
Lol first I seen a car 4wheelin besides an escape...not dissin on your car by any means. You should get one of those transmissions or t-cases that allow 4hi and 4low (however that works with the older subarus) I seen the older ones with that option and would definitely help you out off road. Since you have that custom front bumper with the hitch receiver spot you should put a winch in there on your off road adventures. Nice wheeling though!

the rims are chrome toyota rims. The tires are 215/75/15 Hankook Dynamic MT
@X92Exploder Yeah in 1990 the GL and DL model were renamed the Loyale and offered only with pushbutton 4WD (in the US anyway) They were still decent at wheeling.
A winch would be nice to have. That some pretty serious off roading
Looks like your in zoo town, im over in Bozangelas. I love your subi, I just bought a 86 GL 4wd auto and it has no balls whatsover. It looked like your car had some power, what did you do?
I was replying to someone suggesting a legacy engine.
2 of the existing lug holes fit into the yota rim. So you take off the suby hubs and drill the 4 more holes to fit the yota lug pattern. Then weld in new studs in the holes. Or you can get old peugot 505 and 504 rims i believe. Rare and pricey
Would have loved to do that to my '83 and see the difference. Mine had the dual range 4 speed, I figured yours must too? I do have to say though that mine didn't have the lift, wheels tires and power changes but still went through very similar stuff you put your through. Only difference is I took mine real slow, picked and chose where to put my wheels carefully and went through some ridiculous s---! Left some trucks behind in the snow too. Subes are so light you can go slow and still make it.

@Cyfun Keep two of the stock holes and drill 4 more then weld studs in the hubs.
Yeah an EJ22 is the way to go for lifted wagons. Im in Bozeman so I dont really make it out to Billngs much. Except to party.

@aodg69 I think I'll go that route for now, as it sounds easier than having to find an XT6 to steal hubs and suspension parts off of. However, I would like to convert my back end to XT6 disc, mainly so I can hopefully gain a rear e-brake. ;)

@subieloyale Weld? Just a matter of drilling. I ended up drilling two more holes in my Toyota wheels.

I live in Bozeman and no longer have the old lifted wagon. But i still go on offroad camping adventures in the suburban and I am looking at getting a 2009 Outback for more fun. Where in the state are you at?
@@aodg69 Missoula right trying to move a little south. I’m having a few issues with the gl as far as wiring under the hood. If I could find someone that might know more that would be a huge help. We might take the quads up next weekend to camp on the top.
dont the legacy engines suffer turbo lag or r u talking about a non turbo job?

Hey, Looks like this video is old so I hope you get this... Im in Missoula.. Just bought a '83 DL, Looking to lift mine 3inches as well. I have found some lift kits online, but selection is limited. Where did you get yours?
There are a few companies out there that make lifts. SJR is a good one. If you search the Ultimate Subaru Message Board there is a lot of lift info on there.

Not realy impressing, stuck in snow at 2:39 and lost against the small hill at 2:50 and 3:06 ? Common - the quattro 4wd from Audi is much better....
Spring snow isn't that easy to plow through even in a full size truck I've gotten stuck in the slush. It's not hard to get out but it's really easy to get stuck in even if you're in an audi.
