This is a day in my life. I decided to buy a new pair of Altra Lone Peak hiking shoes. My old pair served me well for over two years. Snd to break in the new shoes, I went for a hike to a blow hole. But as it turns out, the blow hole turned into a punch bowl. It was still a nice hike, though. Then I spent the rest of the day at Van Damme State Beach.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

No explanation for new shoes needed, with as much walking as you do, you deserve it. A new pair of shoes is a lot cheaper than a trip to the ER after a slip on the rocks with the old pair.

This was a great video. I was taking a sip of coffee when you said “George Clintinness” and it almost flew across the room. Ahhhhh ha ha ha ha😂😂😂. I thought you were going Alfred Hitchcock with the raven. I really don’t like heights either. The vertigo feeling is not fun at all. Beautiful area as you said. I experienced the same thing, maybe for a different reason, when I was living there last. I was going to ask about that. But you’ve restored some of my faith with Mendocino.
I spent some time in and around San Diego years ago, back in the 90s I spent a summer hanging out in Ocean Beach, it was very difficult but doable to find spots to park for the night. I came back in 2007 and it was less inviting but Again very doable , since then it's become virtually impossible to stay parked anywhere in San Diego unless you are paying for an expensive camp site. Central and Northern part of the State agreed is much more welcoming for those of us willing to respect and contribute to the smaller communities. I have only lived this life style occasionally due to lack of time and funds, this will transform to full-time in spring of 2024 when I finally reach 62! Point Reyes national seashore has several cool little towns to explore and visit in that area as I am sure your aware of.

Love those shoes. I have 2 pairs. My feet issues improved when I got the Lone Pines. Doesn’t make sense to squish your toes up into shoes.

Excellent video and description of a day in your life. I watched it from start to finish. It seems to be hard to shop around and get the best price for shoes / groceries. As you said the price of gas can add up if you need to drive to buy items. That adds to the price: I also agree with your belief to just buy what you need. That’s the best way of saving.

Hi Scott, it's a lot of $ to spend on shoes 👟👟, but that's one thing you must make happy - your feet. Happy feet, happy everything! I tend to avoid heights, too especially if there's no guard rail. Lovely video, honey, thanks for sharing and featuring the coffee description. About the sourdough bread. I wonder if what if I made home made bread and adding sour kraut to the dough. I just might try it. I, too, like experimenting sometimes. I've had some hits and a miss here and there, but mostly my food experiments have been really tasty ones, and without all those chemical preservatives and anti-caking material in it (things ending in "ose" like cellulose. $150 is a lot for shoes. But that’s one of the big reasons people go into vanlife-so they have some more disposable money. They can oftentimes afford the nicer quality stuff. You also go on a lot of walks and just generally spend your life outside a lot. It’s not like you’re in a house and specifically got expensive “hiking shoes” to take out only 4-5 times a year for actual hiking. They’re good sturdy shoes that are your everyday shoes. Taking care of your body, your feet, is a good investment! 👍

Good shoes are a worthwhile investment. We have to go down there for a specialist for hubs but we turn around & head back right away. Last time we came up old 395 & found food in a little farm stand outside Temecula I think. Now we'll make certain to do that. Mendocino seems nice & if you can get a good signal, why not? FYI: I almost always watch to the end.

Sorry you had a rough time in San Diego. I live here and it has changed and grown terribly. I’m fortunate to live by the bay and ocean. Having also lived in Oregon, I know people can be much friendlier than many are here now. Mendocino is a beautiful place! And I do watch your videos to the end, and enjoy them.

Nice new shoes! I'm happy for you. I go through a pair of Sketchers every 2-3 months, size 11.5 EEEE and I wish they were wider. Generally they're burned up before they split out in the toe box. It's amazing how much better a new pair feels after only a couple months of wearing. I'd like to try a pair of your brand but I'd have to make some leather deflector sheilds or I couldn't afford them. Enjoy the shoes 🙂

Hi Scott! It’s was nice seeing your whole day unfold. I’d say that’s a nice city to be in. Sure hope it works out. I enjoyed your trail walks and the steep drop off. I always find that amazing. It was the right choice to get new shoes because in the end with all the walking you do, comfort with proper support will make the difference in a good walk and a painful one. Also not to mention how it affects your skeletal frame and alignment. Enjoy your stay there with all the beauty there is to see. 😎
Those steep cliffs are sure pretty but some days, I hike well away from them!

ALTRAS... I've mentioned it before, I am huge fan!!!! The shoe hands down is my FAV! I think I've accumulated 5 pairs over the last five years, maybe more. Your old shoes look in the condition I would expect, NO worn seams, not coming apart, no ripping, tearing, etc...they are just a super well made shoe. The tread along with the cushioned soles really hold up, I've put many, many miles on each one of mine. What I will say like you mentioned, once you buy a new pair, they are HEAVEN on your feet!!!! $150 is a fair price when you look at the average "good" shoe cost probably 50-100 bucks...and most are garbage actually...poorly made or not made to withstand extreme use. I'd have to buy 2 or 3 pair to equal the longevity of the ALTRA. I'm very fortunate that my work gives me a quarterly shoe allowance for so the price doesn't sting as much. The COMFORT & wide toe box is definitely what originally sold it for me. One of the things I've learned over the years is to take care of your feet for overall daily life comfort. Always enjoying the vids..much appreciated for the time you take uploading them.

I always make a fresh pot of coffee before I watch your videos. You wouldn’t like the copious amounts of whole cloves and pumpkin spice I grind up with the beans lol.I go to Big 5 sporting goods store for 🥾, 40$ on sale for 16$ so I bought two pairs.

Love the new shoes! My brother recommended a new brand of tennis shoes for me. He has been wearing them for years and you can wash them, let them air dry, and they look brand new. Quite expensive for me as well,but worth every penny. I wore them for the whole Niagara Falls trip. Fantastic feeling feet as we walked everywhere. My knees weren’t screaming either. 😅

I watched the whole video while I ate breakfast and drank my coffee. What a beautiful area - I've never been up above Santa Rosa, wish I could visit there. Heights, yuck - scary. As for your shoes, I now buy two of most things I like, and save one for when the first wears out. It can be expensive if you buy new, but it is worth it, as too many companies "improve" the original item into something inferior. Luckily, I get most of my clothes, even shoes, from thrift stores. I find new/virtually new shoes all the time, for 5 or 6 bucks, and now have my favorite LL Bean and Land's End mocs to last me for a decade. If you have an extra $150 laying around . . . 🌞Hope your travels take you up to the Fortuna/Eureka/Arcata area - I'd like to hike with you around there too. 👣🥾☕👍

I recently bought Merrell Moab shoes versus the Lone Peaks due to Altra's higher prices. The Merrells are my second pair and I am extremely satisfied with them. Another brand I absolutely love are the Skechers with the wide toe boxes. At 75 I am all about comfort. I was surprised by your remarks regarding San Diego as I had no difficulties or issues staying in San Diego and truly enjoyed several months in one particular area. I even had a lengthy conversation with a police officer who knew I was a van lifer. Anyway, I am temporarily living with my sister in Sacramento and will visit a friend who will be vacationing in Mendocino. It was nice to see parts of the area in your video. Thank you for that.

I had a pair of Moab’s, one of the most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever had! They actually split the nail on my pinky toe because the toe box was so snug. I also lose balance with any shoe that has a heal. Zero drop is the only way for me otherwise I have terrible balance.
