Cork to Waterford with Bus Éireann Expressway

- There are no direct trains from Cork to Waterford, but there does appear to be a lovely road along the coast of you catch one of the Expressway coaches. So I pushed my natural dislike for buses to the very bottom of my bag and decided to give it a go!
It turns out that the modern VDL buses on the route provide a really comfortable and smooth service and I actually enjoyed the ride a lot.
...now all I have to do is work out where the light switch for the on-bus toilet is...

Haha that's fine! I had a good laugh to myself at the time! Because the rail system is so sparse, the bus is the only way to explore more of Ireland. And judging by that ride, they are reliable and comfortable - unless you need a pee!

You are right about bus journeys; they do lack a sense of occasion. Yet I can remember back to when I first reached double figures and, as a family we used to travel from London up to Glasgow overnight to stay with relatives. The journey was uncomfortable and boring, but the sight of the Western SMT fleet in their black and white livery, trooping into Victoria Coach station remains with me to this day. We might as well have been setting out on the "Orient Express"! Big time travel!
Tbh I am warming to them. If the bus gets you somewhere that the train cannot go. Or if you cannot afford the train. Then I think modern bus/coach travel is pretty good.

There was recently a once off train run from Cork to Waterford as a history/tourism piece, my parents got it. Hopefully in the long run extra routes can be added.
well I guess you can still do Cork to Waterford by train if you change at Limerick Junction or the train reverses. not sure there's much hope for the old direct line, as it is now a greenway.

Page 66 of the VDL Futura fhd2-139 manual. Toilet Light switch is to the left of the sink, operates two halogen spotlights.
Ah ha! Thank you Clive! So, I was pressing the correct switch but it was either faulty or this rookie bus rider was making a daft mistake!

Great video. I have family in Tramore and Annestown a few miles outside of Waterford City, the Greenway is definitely a must-do if you get the chance, the viaduct at Kilmacthomas and Durrow offers some splendid views, and the station as I understand has been restored, plus you can walk through Ballyvoyle Tunnel
I was just saying to my wife that we'd probably enjoy a quick break in the area, walking the greenway. Just have to find some time in her calendar!

Nice one I’ll been on them buses half of the time I remember getting the bus from Galway to Derry by expressway and I was asleep the whole way up and it was about 6 hours I woken up in Derry feels like I was only on the bus not long and remember my throat was at me as soon I woken up as I do snore and I think I may be snoring lol 😂 my throat was fine after awhile
Haha! I'm sure nobody really heard you snoring over the sound of the bus engine, so don't worry!

Lucky you got on one of the futuras (LX class). We used to have lots of these on the Cork to Galway and Waterford routes but most of them were recently swapped with older Irizars (SE Class) from Donegal routes that needed more reliable buses.

Thanks for another great video, Johnny! Interesting to see the journey in “reverse”…I once had to make the journey west to Cork as a rail replacement bus service; I was travelling from Rosslare Eurosport to Cork by train ( via Waterford, Tipperary and Limerick Junction) when engineering works had closed the line between Waterford and Limerick Junction. Think this was back in the early 2000s, so can’t remember whether the Youghal and Middleton bypasses had been opened.
If you’re ever back in the area, I can heartily recommend the Waterford Greenway, especially around Kilmacthomas - the former station has been lovingly restored, and the railway viaduct adores fantastic views i of Kilmacthomas.

Lovely views overall and good value for money at €14.30. I did the Cork-Midleton journey both by train and local buses (Bus Éireann but not on the Expressway, which I used for other services). After checking your reply to my comment on the Cork to Cobh line the railway which now terminates at Midleton is now a greenway indeed on the section to Youghal, where it terminated. However, the line to Waterford was from Mallow and closed in 1967

Unfortunately Ireland had its own Dr. Beeching, the West Cork Line would be very handy today as the buses have not returned to pre Covid levels. A night out in the City means driving or booking an hotel as evening services are non existent. The tracks were removed and sold to an African country, most of the track bed has been built over and bridges removed so any reinstatement would have to be Tram/Light Rail.
I made a video and a short for your response about the light in the toilet and I also have a been shouting your name out in the video too as I was watching back this video and I heard you saying you couldn’t find the switch for the light or something hope you still come back soon to Ireland and do more of them looking forward to seen if you do return I’ll be watching it as love transportation as well

Hello from Manchester U.K. - although I have family in Dunshaughlin Co Meath and have in the past got the overnight National Express Eurolines 880 service from Manchester to Dublin via Holyhead, I have family connections to Tramore Co Waterford on my Mum’s side - during the 1980’s, I’d visited my Granny in the Good Shepherd Convent school in Manor St in Waterford and later, I went to her funeral in St John’s Cathedral in Waterford and out to Ballygunner Cemetry where the coffin was placed on a cart to be brought up a hill to the graveside - we stopped off in a B&B in Kilkenny on our way back by car from Waterford to Dunshaughlin, also stopping off in Cashel for a meal and for petrol
Thank you for sharing such interesting memories. I'd certainly love to return to the south coast of Ireland again.

There are ticket machines in Cork otherwise everywhere else you can buy them on the bus.
Expressway has those digital display with the stops and destination details on all of their buses, but the main Bus Èireann buses do not.

@@JohnnyHooverTravelsAs a man who has travelled on Bus Eireann for basically all his life, I have always chosen expressway over the main bus eireann buses since the seats on the Expressway buses are much more comfortable, like when I'm travelling to a route like Dublin-Tullamore or something. And bus Eireann has only had that monitor screen on one of their buses, the VDL ones.
If commuting from Moate - Althone or Athlone to Moate I will either take bus eireann or flagline.
The Bus Eireann city buses in Cork have those screens. I suspect they will roll them out to all buses in time. BTW Expressway is BE’s commercial (for profit) division, all other BE services are government funded services.

Elderly people with nowhere to be taking leisure trips, occupying seats that rightfully belong to the working man who pays for his ticket. No wonder our trains and buses are overcrowded.
@@serbkebab2763 I worked from age 16 to retirement and paid taxes which I continue to pay. I have earned the right to my free travel pass. You will qualify for a pass in the future. I doubt you will refuse it when the time comes.
