Great stuff! Thanks for putting this video out. Removes any ambiguity about the laptop's internals & upgradability.
VERY useful - and very well produced.
Indeed, you clarified elements about the G16 and upgrading that are not clearly available otherwise.
Thank you for your great work!
:)
thanks @mash IT. I'll be saving this video for when i do upgrade in a year.
Thank you so much for getting right to the point, with nothing but relevant information. Just for that, Mister, I'm subscribing!
thank you mate, I really appreciate that
Thanks for the info. Seeing the internals, and especially the drive options, was a deciding factor for what to get my son. I wanted something with 2x 80mm slots, and this satisfies that.
So status update on that. The G16-7620 that I purchased is slightly different than what you presented. On this one, the M2 slots are shifted slightly to the left, closer to the edge of the laptop. And instead of the top slot being populated with a short SSD, it is instead populated by the WiFi module (yours is on the lower right). The lower slot is populated with the 1TB SSD, and the lower right slot (where you have your wifi module) is a null slot. Meaning there are traces on the motherboard with solder points, but no actual connector. Instead, there is a rubbery spacer where the connector should be, which appears to just be serving as a stand-off. Overall, the architecture of the motherboard is slightly different than what your is, so I am guessing a different rev of the motherboard. Oh well. It is what it is. But fair warning for everyone else that might be thinking about one.
@@NSFWHarold so you couldn't install a second ssd?
@@xrenatoxd correct. No second slot available
Thanks for that !
I am was looking at the G16 but the higher specs cost a lot . Now I can get the lower spec and change it out !
Most helpfull...😁
Personally i dont think its worth it unless you avtually do some multitasking or need large storage. I just got the laptop and clean instals and set it up, speeds are great, the ssd is only 1,000 mb slower then the one recomended here, 5k vs 6k. And any speed difference w9nt be noticeable except the placebo effect. Im gonna save the money for drr5 upgrade in like 2 years after the tech advances. Oh and memory usage is around 4gb idle, up to 7-8gb when i was opening files and downloading multiple drivers suring setup while warching temos and usage info.
Thanks a lot for your video! I just followed and upgraded the original 16G ram to 64 ram, and installed the second 2T ssd.
Glad it helped :)
Hello, I bought a G16, I don't have it with me yet and I would like to know what I should take into consideration when turning it on for the first time? or the recommendations you would give me.
@@MashITTech
Very informative video. Thanks!
Great video, thanks. Doing the same thing soon
Great Video, thanks for sharing.
Great video as always. I believe the RAM cap to 5200 is the 13th Gen mobile CPU and not Dell. Apparently, most of the Dell 13th Gen laptops would support 5200 DDR5 (i.e. XPS 15 and 17, Alienware, etc.) but some XPS owners have stated that early 2024 BIOS updates from Dell have knocked the RAM speed cap back down to 4800!! They may do the same with the G16 or it may just be the thinner XPS, so be careful not to waste money on 5600 Fury when you may be better off just upgrading with extra 4800 speed memory.
Another great video :)
Good stuff 👍!
Wonderful informative video. No other channel so far has ever showed installing 4 TB NVMe .. really appreciate your efforts. If possible can you make a video of installing 4 TB NVMe SSD in OMEN 17 cm2002TX or OMEN 16 2023 models
It's exactly the same way you would install a 1tb NVME. 🤦
great video, new sub!
🤣
Thank you for this video, first of all, can you recommend this computer and secondly, as far as I understand from the video, in addition, second ssd and ram can be added, is it true?
Wonderful video
Great vid! Any thoughts on the Msi GE78HX?
Man you are great! I did not know that long ssd could be placed in to short ssd place and i do not think that this info is available anywhere else on the net.
So real so explanatory(in the past i ruined one laptop because i did not plug out the battery: which is a must that i know now by an expensive experience : -) )
Feedback: I wish you had done some tests/benchmarks before and after
Dell s especially 512gb stock small size ssd s are just garbage and anyone buying it (not should) MUST upgrade
SO VERY GOOD AND USEFUL ADVICE / DEMONSTRATION. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Glad you found it helpful and yes, that’s a good idea, I should have completed some tests 👍
Awesome video, just got this model. Bought the recommended drive, will be here tomorrow. My memory is currently running at 4800, given the cap of 5200 you discovered on this model do you feel it is still worth it to upgrade that as well?
Personally id say wait a year or 2 until ddr5 twch advances and lower end prices decrease. Depends what you need for memory though, when i was doing setup and intalling stuff and watching the temps and usage my menory got up to 8gb used, out of 16. Not ideal for multitasking alot
Thank you so much for this amazing video.
First, is there some real gain to use ram more than the specification of dell, because probably the bus could be the main limitation? And also it means lower battery life, warmer computer and so often using fans and so more noise. Do you think it could reduce the reliabilitt of the machine?
I need more ram but with these consideration I am not sure to go to more than 4800Mhz. And is there some significant improvement to do that for light room or music making for example?
For ssd, it looks now the faster are evo90pro, so I think I ll go for them, I would like to go to raid 1 config but I am afraid to lose data if of both fails. Do you have any idea on how much raid 1 can sufer from lack of reliability?
Thank you so much :)
Personally i dount the ram change did much. Right now, ddr is top of the line. 4.8k or 6k, its going to be insanely fast and nearly 0 difference. Now, wait 2 years and get new ddr5 at faster speeds and it will likely work alot better, usually new tech gets optimized and faster over years, even good ddr3 and most ddr4 were the same until more top of the line ddr4s came out. That being said, if you do stuff that is memory intensive like multitasking alot or streaming or video work, higher gb of ram will help.
@@skie6282 I had a great improvment with my old old xps when I upgraded it. I hope ot will be same with this one. But I really can t imagine why I should need more than this power, for music and image raw processing it is almost real time processing now, maybe a faster ssd can make something better, I still have the one provided with it.
I think I will keep this computer untill death 🤣
You are using both NVME Slots, what did you do about the WiFi and Bluetooth
Hi! Thanks so much for this video! I'm thinking about getting this laptop and doing the upgrades you showed. I have a question though; why did Disk Management show 4 drives? I've never seen that before. Thanks!
I stupidly had a couple of externals attached when I took the screenshot, sorry
@@MashITTech
Now that makes sense. Thanks!
Do you have a video on how to prepare the instillation usb when upgrading a new drive? I know for Windows there is a usb media creation tool, but I'm not sure how to add the Dell drivers to a usb.
I have this question as well
Hey, first of all i wanna say amazing vid.
Secondly off topic, i placed an order for the m18. I wanna know after I receive one, what are the stuff one should test for in a new laptop to check the model i received is functioning properly? Can you give me any recommendations for what to test, and what applications can i use to help me test?
My suggestion is always to check it over visibly then once you have set up the laptop and updated it with windows update and alienware update run: cinebench r23 and 3dmark time spy. Use the over drive mode in command centre and record the results. Then check that against what other users get or if the same spec as me use my review 👍
@@MashITTech thank you so much. 👍🏻
@@MashITTech yes it is exactly the same model as you got. Dell should pay you a premium, your review sold it to me honestly. I also went with your idea of not getting higher ram/ssd and upgrading it myself.
The 1TB SSD is not an option, its the only SSD... unless you contact Dell? I got mine, just about set up now. I assume opening it to put storage SSD inside will void the warranty?
Thank you for this. Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card in this particular laptop model? I have a 3060 in mine.
No, sorry. The cpu and graphics cards are soldered on to the motherboard
Please show how to put the cover back on. I have a 2022 model (7620) and the clips do not want to go
Can you upgrade the laptop straight out of the box? Even without turning it on at all?
Great video, thanks a lot for your explanations! Do you know If a Samsung SSD M2 980 Pro WITH heatsink will fit? Or will the 8.6mm thickness be too thick for this Laptop?
Unfortunately the heatsink is just too think. Just get the 980 without the heatsink if you can
@@MashITTech Thanks for answering. Will do. Really appreciate the work you put into your Channel.
Hi! Thank you for your all these works! Please advice me, I am going to buy laptop to use it for programming, some light 3D working and basic graphics. Is G16 for me? i7 12700H, 3060, QHD+ version is 999$. Is it worth? Does it have good battery life?
no most intel laptops have subpar battery life! it will be about 4 hours of light use :(
I think ryzen works just 10% more?
Kinda bummed I just found out my g16 only has one ssd slot. My wifi and ssd are right next to each other unlike yours. I think yours might be 7630 vs my 7620 bummer. I don't know if 5600 64g doesn't work with 7620 or I just didn't give it long enough to turn on? Crucials website says it's compatible
Hi Dave! I noticed you shifted from using WD Black SN770 to Crucial P3 Plus.
May I know why? I’m trying to buy one for my M17 R5. Thank you 😊
its only because the p3 plus offer a 4tb single sided ssd so its compatible with most laptops! I prefer the sn770 but they don't do a 4tb. I used the faster sn850x 4tb for the main drive, but I don't need that performance on a game drive :) hope that helps
I have had the MSI GT77 for 3 months. Fantastic, with a fantastic monitor. Alienware let me down. Even my old 17R5 abandoned me...😒
Yes, they made some really odd choices this year
@@MashITTech thank you!
I thought the G16 doesn't have an extra SSD slot. or is that option available for more expensive models
That's the 2022 model, in this year's model, Dell bring the extra SSD slot back.

Hello, thank you for the wonderful video. I expanded the RAM in my G16 7630 from 16 to 32GB (Fury 5600).
The RAM only runs at 4800Mhz, do I have to change the speed in the BIOS so that it runs faster?
Please answer. Thanks
that's really odd.It should be running at 5200mhz like mine! IS your BIOS up to date? There is nothing you have to do in BIOS
BIOS Version 1.9.0
I have the same - bought Kingstone Fury 2x32GB 5600MHz and have only 4800MHz in the bios - I've even updated it to 1.10. I have i9 in my model - I wonder if that matters?

Hello, how do you know what dell driver to add to the flashdrive? Cheers Mate.
See I did this to the T And after reassembly it just will not start up. The laptop doesn’t even register that the AC is plugged in. It won’t turn on with just the AC in or the battery only. No lights no nothing. I even replaced the old parts back in it and still nothing. I gave up trying to figure it out myself I’m about positive I’ve fried it somehow
Hey uh did you buy a ram kit or 2 sticks of same ram?
I'm trying to find a kit but they're expensive and buying two same rams is way cheaper but idk if they will work.
Will they?
Ram pricing is often random! But the good news is, buying 2 sticks is exactly the same as a kit, its just often the kit s cheaper!
@@MashITTech thx I will keep that in mind, As for RN I am running two MICRON MTA4ATF1G64HZ-3G2 8GB they came with the laptop and after 2
years its time I upgraded them so researched a bit and finally found KF432S20IB/16 Kingston FURY 16GB 3200MHz DDR4 CL20 SODIMM Fury Impact, these seems better but the thing is buying a 32GB kit of this is around 12K here and buying two 16GB ones is around 6K (IDK why it's like that) so, now I'm confused as I read somewhere that kits are better and sometimes mixing rams just doesn't work.
oh well lets see if they work or not
when people talk about mixing ram they usually mean different ram sticks/brands so say a crucial 3200mhz and a fury which seems obvious but some people do this 🤣 if you buy 2x single sticks of fury ram you will get exactly the same sticks as if you bought the kit so there really is no reason to worry
@@MashITTech oh i see thx for the help.
Is rtx 4050 available in the g series?
Hi Mash,
I have Dell G16 7620 (2022 model).
Can I install two M.2 2280 SSD's as shown in the video?
On dell website says it has only one M.2 2280 slot for SSD.
sorry mate, Dell didn't ever sell the 2022 G16 in the UK so I didn't get to test one. The manual does state 1 m.2 slot so I guess that is probably correct, sorry :(
@@MashITTech thank you!
Thank you for this video, it helps me a lot! Does it recognize the 64 GB of RAM? because on the dell manual they say 32 GB max. I think I know the answer but I prefer ask to be sure 😄
Haha typical dell! 64 is fine 😀👍
Hello I haven't changed the ram yet, I would like to know if you know how many pins the Kingston Fury strips have and is it obligatory to respect the number of pins because I have seen crucial strips which indicate compatibility with the G16 however there are 262 pins and the compatible ram on the dell site indicates 288, thanks
Is this for the New G16 or old G16
Is this applicable for the Dell G15 SE 5521?
Nice video 👍🏾 thanks for help, but i have question, i have contact the technical service of Dell and she's says the maximum of Ram is 32gb in 4800mhz... Do you have change settings in the bios ? Thanks for help sir.
(For dell G16 rtx4070 i9 24 cores)
Dell just read off a script! 64gb will be fine and it is pug and play, nothing to do in BIOS
How did you achieve the higher ram speed with the same ram and spec g16 as me as plug and play has not achieved the same result? Curious if you tweaked something
@@MashITTechI also need to know if it really is possible to upgrade to 5200

The only diferent thing is that I'm not running a fresh install I setup the laptop as it came from the seller... Dell instalation.

Plus for rtx 4060 or 70
Which one did you buy? How's it going so far?
Is it possible to rebuild the second SSD slot like the first one, to install another 2230 SSD model?
Yes, both can be changed from 30>80 or vice versa
Does this computer can really support 64GB of ram + 2 x TB of SSD storage ?????
Additionally, does the "up to 2 x 1TB" on the manufacturers' technical sheets a real technical limit, or can I still put a 2TB SSD (or more) instead of the 1TB? (for a Lenovo Legion and Asus Rog).
Thank you!!
Yes, the ram I linked worked perfectly. And yes you can usually ignore the manufacturers max specs, 2tb easily work in these laptops, you just need to be careful not to buy a double sided 4th drive
@@MashITTech Exactly - I've just removed original 30 mm 1TB drive with Windows and put Samsung 990 PRO 2TB and Samsung Evo 870 2TB and works perfectly... with Kubuntu and LUKS encryption :).
Excuse me, Could I upgrade the memory card to 64G(32+32)? because Dell G16-7630-R1988BTW type data sheet information just provide maximum to 32G, that very confuse for me. Could you tell me what brand and specifications you used. thanks and appreciate your answer.
Yes, I just did that - 2x32GB of 5600MHz of Kingston Fury memory. For some reason it's running at 4800MHz only - for both bios 1.08 and newest 1.10.
Inthe owner manual they said maximum its 32 gb with 2x16gb i just bought 2x32gb 4800 ghz its is ok to do that i see you put 2x5600mghz
Is this laptop support gen5 ssd?
i recently bought a dell g16 with an intel i9-12900H, and it's constantly thermal throttling, do you have a solution? like an alternative for undervolting or something many thanks
Did you solve the problem?
@@muratungor1703 yep, kind of..... so first i created a new fan profile in alienware command center that was a bit faster than default balanced mode. then i reduced the turbo ratio limits so that the cpu didn't thermal throttle at that fan speed. also when i'm not gaming i disabled turbo boost (using throttlestop). for gaming i created a new fan profile with max fan speed (the laptop has a dedicated game mode button but i suspect it increases power to the cpu as well, heating it more)
these midrange laptops are not made to handle the i9, if u want an intel i9 laptop its better to buy a premium laptop.
(this is different account but same person) lol
do you require a clean installation even if you are just upgrading the ram?

Just bought the dell g16 laptop and was wondering if i could skip the usb drive step since i haven't even turned it on and just go straight to adding the 4tb ssd. This is my first pc, so im not great with computers?
You need the operating system on the ssd for it to work. It is currently on your existing ssd even if you have never used it. Unfortunately you need to clone it or do a fresh install with a USB stick
@MashITTech Well, I'll save your video, I don't plan on upgrading at the moment, so i don't void my year warranty. Would an external ssd be fine? Would be cool to download the games on an external ssd and leave the internal for other stuff.
I often use externals for my game libraries, works perfectly
ive found an 2x 48gb ram kit is it supported or not?
Hi Mash. Will i run into stability issues if i mix a Kinston fury ram kit 16gb @5600 with the stock ram 8gb @4800. Totalling 24gb
It should run fine but will be running at the speed of the slowest stick when you don’t have a matched pair

What usb drive?
Overall this was a helpful video in it encouraged me to upgrade my machine.
My experience was no improvement in ram (still 4800 after clean install) from the same chips, the return of a failed wd black ssd and fiddling around with drivers to get the it to see the ssd to reinstall windows.
I'm glad I did it, I haven’t got quite what I hoped and it needed more time than expected.
Any clues to getting the memory performance shown in the vid from these chip?
update bios
It’s on the latest bios. Checked with dell and they said it’s not possible. The video suggests it’s possible. Would like to know how as just replacing the ram doesn’t do it. Something else must need to be done. Just not sure what. Couldn’t find any bios setting which allow you to change ram speed either so it’s a mystery and one I hope to solve in time.
