Oh, the Nintendo 64. It’s the console I probably have the fondest memories of since it was the first home console I’ve ever played. I remember getting up at 8am, having breakfast and then gaming until supper time, or until my parents literally forced me to stop playing. Those were the good ol’ days where I didn’t have a care in the world. Now, I have to worry about adult stuff like mortgage payments and going to work. It makes me wish I could go back in time to when all I had to worry about was how much time I’d be able to spend gaming each day.
If you’re like me and reminiscing about the Nintendo 64, then maybe you’re considering actually buying the console. I still own my N64, but if you want one, go get one! You definitely won’t regret it. For starters, it’s not very expensive to get a grey N64. If you want a special edition N64, like the blue and yellow Pikachu edition, then you’re going to need to shell out a bit more money, but you’ve got a collector’s item at that point. The games are the biggest selling point of the console since almost every single one of them is great.
There’s more reasons than just those to get a Nintendo 64 so enjoy the video, let me know whether or not you’re thinking of buying an N64 in 2021 in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming tech content.

In general, the N64 is looked down-upon due its homogenous library, controller, graphics and objectively typically poor video output. It was revolutionary to me and so holds a special place in my mind. But kids used to 360 degree control and non-linear 3D gaming will probably ignore the N64.

I have an N64 and it's sad those good days are gone 😞 but it's something that I'll never forget. Still love playing my games on the N64, rareware was one of the best things Nintendo ever had on the N64 loved playing banjo kazooie/Tooie conkers bad fur day Diddy kong racing and all the other games rareware made for that system. It truly broke my heart💔 when rareware left Nintendo would have been so cool to play those games on the go with the Nintendo switch.
They didn't leave they got bought out

Emulation is the way to go my friend I feel sorry for your eyes 👀@@shaun8062
Your point about emulation being "illegal" is technically incorrect, although practically correct. Emulators are not illegal, and you're making the stretch of the idea that the only method of creating emulation is pirating games. Dumping games in a legal matter is totally possible, and it's up to the gamers to source ROMs in a legal matter (and not pirate). Most people will pirate games, correct, but that does not mean emulation is illegal. If emulation was illegal, it wouldn't be as prevalent online as it is today.
I had the same thoughts!
Exactly and it can also be a gray way to experience your old games in an internal higher resolution or, in the case of Mario 64, stick to a 30fps cap in the largest levels, where the N64 would drop frames
Thanks for the info. I didn't think emulation was illegal, but I was not aware of the pirating facet of the issue.
Downloading is flat out legal. Distribution is the illegal thing in copyright law. There's some confusion because if people use a P2P/torrent downloading application or something, they're distributing stuff at the same time, usually without really knowing it.
If I remember correctly the justification for ripping games is because you're allowed to make an "archival copy" of movies or music you own and burn them to discs as long as you didn't sell them. The equivalent would be a backup copy of a game and then exploiting your console to accept it.
But there was a case where the court considered playing the media on a different device (example being ripping your CD's and DVD's to a computer/Plex server/mp3 player) to be "transformation" where the two were considered different copies. If we apply that same logic, emulating games on different devices than the original isn't necessarily completely legal. It's a grey area.
But it's not really enforceable since how exactly will anyone know if the process can be done 100% offline?
I have 3 n64 consoles and boy it’s just makes me cry knowing that the good old days are gone
Right now is tomorrow's good old days
Why do you have 3 n64s?
@@mysteriousbigiron2588 I have 3 as well. Some people like to collect the different colors and variations. A really good game, stays a really good game even when the current technology has far surpassed it. I played Star Fox 64 for about 3 days straight just about a month ago. I recently picked up Shadows of Empire, Waverace, Turok and Conker's Bad Fur Day because it had great multiplayer as well. I know I'm old and it isn't coming back, but I miss when games were designed to be played with other people on your couch. Now it's all meant to be played online with some raging 13 year old in some random location on Earth who you have never met, will never meet and will never want to meet. I don't always want to play games through nostalgia goggles. I do like the new directions the XSX and PS5 took. However, DLCs and added content got a bit out of hand with loot boxes. I have a humble collection of about 25 consoles, and 10 different handhelds and there is nothing as enjoyable as playing games on the original hardware.

I started collecting N64 last year. I started with the Pikachu edition one!! Got it for a good price with a game :) and I do have a solid stack of great games as well! I have a ps5 but I always go back to my N64. Paper mario is a hidden gem for me haha
I still have my Nintendo 64 with about thirty games, it's been in storage many years, I'm about ready to break it out and have some fun!
Nintendo 64 was so dope. It's the last Nintendo console I got. I was in my early teens when the GameCube came out and that purple box looked childish to me. Been rocking with Playstation ever since.
Sad that the design ruined the gamecubes reputation, it had a lot of good games for that era.
You missed out because gamecube was super solid for games, basically all Nintendo consoles were. Def might wanna go back and try it
Well I still have my Nintendo 64 from when I was 3 and still play it and still plan on buying games for it
donkey kong 64 and smash bros will always hold a fashionation in my mind and heart and i will love the fill of playing them again especially donkey kong 64.
Smash Bros and 007
@@Jake-li7ih uh oh...im telling you uh oh you just reminded me of another awsome game uh oh boa uh oh 007 is my childhood too and now that you mentioned it im going to buy it too and relive my childhood.
I've had mine since it came out and bought another one at Goodwill with the controller and it still works pretty much a backup in case if the other dies I've invested so much into it used games, used rumble packs, and used controllers as well. my all time favorite childhood. Diddy Kong Racing, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, 007 GoldenEye, Pokemon Stadium 1&2, Mario 64
I started collecting games for the N64 but gave up when the games I wanted were to expensive. So I bought an Everdrive X7 and now have the full library, along with the Disc Drive games. It's fantastic.
I had a decent N64 collection several years ago but sold it all off as I wasnt playing it much and trying to store everything was getting to be a hassle. Well I picked up another one cheap recently, and I am going the Everdrive-esque route myself this time. A loose cartridge collection isnt very appealing to me anyway, plus the games are getting expensive, for less than the price of Conkers Bad Fur day I can buy a ED64 and have the entire library on that 1 Cartridge with sd. A no brainer, for me at least, and its still original hardware and software, no emulation, still using all original peripherals on a 36" Sony Trinitron. The N64 is still a very hard system to emulate with good results so I feel this is the best solution to play the games these days, old cartridges while more reliable than old discs, still have battery and/or corrosion issues or bent pins. Its fun to revisit the old well known games and try some I missed the 1st time around. And no downloads, updates or online BS to fiddle with either.
I enjoyed the lighthearted humor in this video. :)
same I'm keeping my n64 for ever
You were talking about the cartridges doing more damage to the wall than the game. That literally happened to me! I got so pissed at Rainbow Six one day, I threw the game across the room and it dented the wall but the game was absolutely fine. lol Still have small dent in the wall 25 years later!
I had a lot of fun with the N64 back in the day, think I still got one laying around in a shed. Good system in my opinion
*Arnold Schwarzenegger" Get out of the shed!
Take that fucker out of the shed and put it in your living room where it belongs! Give that console the treatment it deserves!
you should probably take it out of the shed and put it somewhere safer where it will collect less dust. Dust and dirt can cause system issues. Also water will ruin the whole thing.
One of my most favorite retro consoles ever. N64 and Super Nintendo! Love them!!!
I got a Nintendo 64 long after the console died when I was 11. It had the best party games and it was the console that introduced me to Zelda and it’s always been my favorite console.
I'm currently eyeing a used N64 at a local retro games shop here in SC. It's about $100.00. I've already purchased a copy of Nightmare Creatures to play and copies of Golden Eye and others will follow in time. It will be a part of my Retro Set-Up that includes an Atari 2600 Vader Edition, my original Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Dreamcast, and Nintendo Wii. I never owned an N64 when they came out, but I played them a bit, along with the GameCube, at friend's houses. I'm looking forward to adding it to the collection.
I got one last week for free, my grandparents are selling their place and an old N64 that my cousin had as a child was left there since the 90's. Glad I could cop it with 15 games. It feels amazing and brings me memories from trips I when I was playing siblings in diddy kong racing etc. Star wars shadows of the empire is fun as hell
I've ordered an NTSC region free model, can't wait till it arrives. 😁
Just got mine yesterday and getting the power cable today!
ABSOLUTELY worth it. Great games (as you already know), you can get a flash cartridge and play ALL the games (everdrive 64 also has an nes emulator so it can play most of those too and it's region free), and the hardware is some of most solidly manufactured I've ever seen. I've dealt with many older consoles that had issues and the N64 seems to be one of the best built. No moving parts -No hardrive or laser to go bad. The systems are now 25 years old, and the only problem I ever had was one that had a non working controller port (probably just dirty). The one have now I fully expect to work in 20 years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it still works 50 years from now. These systems will be going long after most switches die. Also a plus to play it on a Sony Trinitron. The colors look great for stuff like ssb and mk64. Think I'm a little OCD about it, but I prefer the experience of using original hardware with a crt tv. That's the most accurate way to play for me. I have sm 3d all stars on the switch but I never play sm64 on it. I'd much rather play it on my n64. Not too into the cart collecting tho..that can be pricey.
I have an N64 and I can attest, this is true!
Did you buy it on the release year?

I like how you said you couldn’t play n64 games on the switch but I’m watching this 7months later when you can do play them on the switch
I had a great childhood in almost every aspect, but the N64, especially Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Mario Party and Banjo Kazooie still hold some of my fondest memories
I was just looking at Some of me dads old stuff I opend one of the boxes thare was an n64 with like 20 amazing games 4controllers I starded playing and had a rlly good time
I actually grew up on the wii and DS lite. I had Super Mario 64 for the Ds and it made me start pondering about playing the original N64 game. Its one thing to emulate, but i thought that playing on the actual console would be better. So now i just bought a Japanese Gold N64 with a USA/Japan cartridge mod. Cant wait for it to come in
ds lite is the best to mod rn
Miss those days, love the SNES/N64 and Gamecube Era's.
N64 + Everdrive is a good place to start. Then RGB mod it and use a SCART cable to a CRT then you are set. If you must use an HDMI digital tv with the analog video from the n64, then use the Retrotink5x.

Thankfully I got a Nintendo 64 several years ago. It was a pre-owned system previously used by another of the service users at my disability group. I got it for $15 with a good amount of games. I thought until recently that the system had problems, but I figured out it was the connection to the power supply that was causing it to turn off frequently. I removed and reattached the power brick, and it works brilliantly now!
Awesome! Hope you enjoy the great library :)
15 DOLLARS?! WITH A GOOD AMOUNT OF GAMES?! Oh, you hit the motherload! Dude, that's awesome! May you enjoy it for many many years!
After recently getting a free CRT TV I finally dug my old (second, not childhood original) N64 out of storage along with some games I thankfully kept like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, No Mercy, and Mario Tennis. Kicking myself for selling a few games (probably for pennies) back in the day but enjoying revisiting these classics. Re-buying a couple old games too before they increase in value even more.
By the way, I'd highly recommend buying a Forever Pak if any of your old memory cards still work. They're a little pricey but should more or less work indefinitely since you won't lose data when the batteries die.
I got a 64 since christmas and really enjoyed it

I imported one before its European release, but it’s my least played Nintendo console despite having some phenomenal games. PS1 got the most of my time in that era.
The feeling you describe about games of your childhood is more applicable on the SNES and NES in my case.

A few errors to note in this video. Do not blow in your cartridge. The saliva will ruin the copper pins. Also, you can play turok on the switch. Along with doom 64, Star Wars episode one pod racer

Starfox, fzero x, both banjo games, jet force gemini, dk64, Zelda, battletanx, too many classics to count. GOAT game system
I love the legend of zelda ocarina of time even tho ive never played it for real only on an emulator where i didnt have phone triggers to hit the R Z L buttons but it was an amazing game without it. Even tho ive never owned anything retro or a controller for games or a console at all but its still amazing.
Definitely get the expansion pak and an everdrive flash cart. Lots of goldeneye custom maps and campaigns to play and Mario 64 hacks . The n64 can play fmv video clips too, it can play nes and gameboy colour roms. So much to dabble with if you get an everdrive
My question is where can I buy it?
Also, check locally for retro or second-hand gaming shops. I'm lucky that I have two of them within a twenty-minute drive in the Midlands of SC. The lowest price I've seen has been about $65.00 for a "good" console (Good = some scratches, discoloration, and aesthetic issues that don't affect functionality.) and $100.00 for a "very good" to "excellent" console. And those grades (if you want to call them that) are only missing the original box but look like they've been well maintained.
Awesome video to see
I really want to buy one. Ours was broken... Just a little sad because there's no one i can find here in our place that sells a unit. Really missing the days with my dad playing Banjo Kazooie whole day

Plan on possibly not being able to save games. Now I don't know if it's dead batteries in the game cartridge( and I think not too many games had a battery inside) or memory packs that either don't work or work sometimes, or the fact that practically everything you buy for it is 3rd party cause Nintendo stopped supporting this system years ago. Even if you get memory cards that work you'll likely have to buy 5- 10 of them or more cause they only hold around 3-4 games each. And if you buy an old game that has a battery inside, chances are by now it's dead. I used to have an n64 years ago when it was in production and that was a whole different story. Even with a multi cart there is the same problem from what I've heard also. So it comes down to leaving your system on all day just to continue where you've left off( which may not be a good idea) and also probably never finishing most games. And if when you turn it off you always have to start from the beginning of the game. I am so frustrated. I spent so much money that I really needed for more important things but I didn't want to miss an opportunity due to scarcity of the product in the future. Even the store I bought it in couldn't help and I don't think I can get my money back. So I'll have to spend even more to get some other store to check it out and either repair it or sell me some more peripheral. I wish I never gave up my first n64 console. And to think, one of the main reasons I bought it again was to help me get over the death of my dear friend and only friend of 25 years. Well I hope this helps someone. Please give me a thumbs up if it did or if you agree with me.
The funtastic colored N64 consoles ARE ABSOLUTELY collectors items and the games ARE sky rocketing in price because of so many people collecting.
I love the nostalgia! I still play mine
Q: @TheGamer do you influence people to buy it and when they buy it you get the money from the sellers that sell their N64 console?

Retrotink Mini or a Kaico Labs SNES/N64 line doubler is the best if you want N64 in HD.
Plus, Piko Interactive is starting to release games that were cancelled for N64 during development. That's another reason dust off your ol' N64 and be prepared for.
N64 is probably the best looking Nintendo console of all time. Sadly I never played it as when I was a kid in 99' everyone was telling me to get the Playstation X. I did play N64 a few times in team centers but that was like for 10min or something. Might get one just don't know if I want to get a cheap one to fix up or get something "like new" with a higher price tag. I know eBay sells thousands of them daily but would be cool to find one at a Flea market for like 10-15 bucks with the expansion pack installed.
Had mine from 96 still works a treat 👍
I remember getting my first Nintendo 64 Christmas of 1996. I was beyond excited! This system was ahead of it’s time. The original system was black. 4 controllers and used a cartridge for the games. The original controller had two joy sticks, a d pad, 4 yellow C buttons, a Z trigger button on the bottom and a spot to put a memory card in or a rumble pack. I love how this controller feels! When playing Super Mario 64 you really get a feel to how the controller works. For instance you can easily have Mario run in a full 360 circle by just moving one of the joysticks in a circle. The controls are very responsive. Super Mario 64 starts out very easy and gets more challenging as you move deeper into the castle and collect more stars. I love this game! I highly recommend the Nintendo 64 system and Super Mario 64.
NINTENDO SIXTY FOOOOOOOOOUR
Playstation 1 controller design kills N64's though. The joystick is more accurate and much smoother when rotating. I owned a N64 in 1996 - loved it but did switch to PSX around 1999. The PSX had much more games and seemed mostly targeted to older kids/teens as opposed to Nintendo. BUT Nintendo-only games were and are still amazing in their own right 👌🏼
