Hot Tent Winter SNOW Camping - Warm Fire - (with my Dog)

- My dog Indi and I have headed out camping after a snowfall in our local mountains in the South Island of New Zealand created a beautiful winter wonderland. I love winter camping. The temperatures were below freezing point, so perfect for a hot tent camp. I packed in the Pomoly Hussar 2.0 Hot Tent and wood stove. It was the perfect choice for the cold night ahead. I got the fire roaring and cooked up some lovely camp food over the stove. The mountains and valleys were dusted with snow and provided a beautiful backdrop. Indi and I went exploring to the nearby river to collect water, and the hill behind our camping spot became the go to place for enjoying a cup of tea and a cup of coffee, watching the sun rise and set.

Here's some of my Camping gear I use:
Tent: Pomoly Hussar 2.0 with T1 Stove
Chair: Helinox Chair Zero
Saw: Silky Pocketboy Outback
Sleeping mat: Exped Downmat
Two saws I recommend. Silky Big Boy Folding saw 2000. 14-1/5-inch curved blade, Extra-large teeth. Weight is one pound. Bowsaw--- Agawa Boreal 21. Buy an aggressive blade which they sale as an extra. This saw also will fold up. A little over a pound on the Agawa saw. Both are great saws. The Silky cuts on the back stroke and the Agawa on the front stroke. Another tip is use the full blade length when cutting so you do not dull the middle teeth too quickly. I have both saws and love them!
Thank you David. That is great. It is interesting how the same themes are coming up from different people. It is reassuring. Cheers
Indie is very cute.
Thank you. I agree.
Enjoyed your Hot Tent Adventure. The hike up to that elevation with all that gear is impressive. The scenery of those snow capped mountain peaks is impressive. So much beauty in New Zealand. The tent was roomy and cozy. Indi was well behaved and good company. This is refreshing for me to view on a muggy summer afternoon in Canada. Thanks for producing this excellent video.
Thanks so much.
Abel might be the wood "King" but you 100% are NZ's wood Queen. Love your videos!!
Thanks so much Richie! By the way, I just checked out your channel. Wow, you are doing such a great job. I love the way you provide so many context shots to help the viewer feel like they are there with you. Keep going!! Cathy
@adventureot Wow thankyou Cathy, that really means a lot to me and appreciate your comments!! Still finding my feet but loving this journey so far.
Your channel is my favourite because every video is a different location and youve traveled and filmed in so much of the South Island. I love the scenery and variety of campsites you take us to. Also your authenticity and determination really shows through. A genuine kiwi girl who loves being in the outdoors 🙏
I use the Silky Ultra Accel- happy medium of size and weight. A fixed blade saw is the ultimate though for firewood prep, like the Silky Zubat that Abel uses. Ideally we need to convince Abel that his firewood prepping skills would be better served by starting a business exclusively cutting wood for other CZcamsrs in the area- I'm sure Tony would be keen-he's not getting any younger😅You could just act surprised at stumbling across a pile of neatly cut wood conveniently where you planned to camp😂
Thanks for those saw ideas, I will check them out. Ha ha, yes Abel is a blimmin wood machine. Actually.... you have given me an idea for a video. I follow him in to a camp, wait till he has processed all of his wood, roll a beer in front of his tent, and as he goes to retrieve it, I steal his firewood (Dr Evil laugh).
@@adventureot muhahha-genius idea! if youre on DOC land he doesnt own that wood anyway- the wood belongs to everyone!
@@somebody_keas Yes, yes. That will be my argument. Not my fault that he chopped and stacked it right in my way.
추운 겨울이 그리워네요. 한국은 지금 너무 더운 여름인데 영상에서 시원함을 느낍니다.😊
I am glad that I could share a bit of the cold with you. I am looking forward to summer 🥶
@@adventureot 여름이 궁금하시면 한국이 지금 여름입니다.
Indi knows how to get cozy!
She sure does. Smart girl.
Hi Cathy, the saw I would pick is the 'Agawa Boreal 21'. folding bow saw alongside a really good 'Hatchett' too. as a carpenter the top tip is the longer the saw blade will make far more efficient use of your cutting/sawing arm, in other words you get more bite per push/pull with the longer blade, there also a 'Finnish' company called 'Fiskars' (X7 Camping axe) that make great hatchets too, obviously keep your digits well clear, good luck x
Thank you so much Paul, that is very helpful indeed. Cathy
❤love it❤
Thanks Jean.
Hi Cathy & Indi👋
Great Vid.👍
Im keepin it Brief this time
Jst watched👀
Keep 'em Coming
😍😘 Indi
Till then ✌️😎
Thank you Vivian!!
Haaaaa! I can’t believe you said what you did about having to have your feet warm before being able to fall asleep! I am exactly the same way ❤
It really works doesn't it?! Now if I have a hot water bottle I only put it down by my feet. It works best to get me to sleep faster.
@@adventureot yes it does!!!
Ok. Your video was a welcome respite as TD Debbie dumps four inches of rain on my head.
I had to google it. Looks like a pretty nasty storm. I hope you stay safe.
You, Tony ABCamping and your dogs are so nice to follow on screen , good camping all of you ,From Qc, Canada
Thank you so much.
Hello I am on your camping the first, good feeling and happy so much. Your dog is so calm and follow orders, she is so cute
Thank you very much
Its amazing video camp. Support from Indonesia🇲🇨
Thank you so much!😊
Another amazing video awesome to see Indie being able to enjoy it with you I can't wait for the next camp you post #happycamping 🏕️😊
Thanks Pauline. Always happy when camping :)
Great video Cathy once again👌Looks cold🥶. It looks stunning even in winter ❄️. Food looks great too! Nice too see Indi once again 😊. I’m off to cricket match tomorrow(Saturday) as we getting a heatwave for a few days in Leeds. 26 Degrees 🥵. Have fun 😊
Nice, enjoy the Cricket. Sounds like you'll be needing the sunscreen, and a few cold beers.
Your dedication for making content is absolutely amazing! you spoil us with the beautiful landscape in New Zealand!
That is very kind. Thank you.
Good morning. What a nice camp. If only packing up went so quickly.
As for qood saws, a Buck saw is fairly compact, is easy to assemble, and does a good job of cutting wood.
Have a great day and thank you for sharing your adventure.
Thanks for the recommendation Jeff. So glad you enjoyed the video.
Hello Adventure OT, This is my first time being on your channel, but I enjoy your video very much
Welcome. Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. Cathy
It`s very enyoing for me to see you in this fresh time ☃, with snow at mountain, when I`m at home with 35º 🔥outside in Spain in front of the Mediterranean Sea 🌊
Wow, I am imagining that. What a world away from my experience. Thanks for watching.
Indy knows how to camp! Grab a drink, eat and back to warm bed. ❤❤ wonderful video!
Oh yes, she has the perfect recipe. That and.... take someone else along who will carry everything for you, stoke the fire. and set up your tent and bed. lol. Maybe I should learn from her.
Just getting to this one today. Dang you’ve been losing weight. Nice.
Glad you got to watch it. Hopefully you enjoyed it. We had a great time on this trip.
Hi girls Cathy and Indi😊
Hi Denise. I hope you are doing well.
Great video! Really enjoyed. Cute dog 😊
Thank you! 😊
Indi, snow, hot tent and warm feet - what more can you ask for! That morning chill and mountain views must have been a wonderful and wholesome experience too. Thanks for sharing Cathy.
Thanks Rosie. It was idilic.
Sehr interessante Video
Thank you so much
Hey long time viewer first time commenting, really enjoy your show and especially the snow camps with a fire, calm relaxing and totally enjoyable 😊
Thanks so much for being a long time viewer, and stopping by to say 'hi'. I appreciate it a lot. Thanks for the encouragement.
Get an Agawa Boreal Canyon saw. Best backpacking folding bow saw. So crazy how it's cold where your at it's 96 here in Florida.
New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere and is right in the middle of Winter right now, plus she is at a high altitude.
Thanks Randy. The Agawa saws seem to be well thought of. I will look into that one. Cheers.
The opposite hemisphere weather thing can be mind boggling. Like me imagining you guys in a heatwave while I am struggling to warm up my hands in the cold.
@@adventureot the saw is pricey and the shorter 15 isn't as good. I will tell you for larger wood, having your hand more vertical vs partially horizontal like other saws makes a lot of difference. It's also easier to use both hands when strength is declining to finish a cut. Love your show.
Kent Survival has a great folding saw, and uses a knife to break up the wood.
Thanks. A few people have suggested I look at his gear, so I'll be sure to do that. Cheers
It's always amazed me how you could carry all of that gears up hill, great to see you and Indi enjoying the cold camp 🥶
I think of it like a gym work out and quite like the challenge. My only worry is injury. I am very mindful of being careful.
Yes, we need to be very careful of that word, had a few of that 😅
Wonderful video, Cathy! Thank you so much! BTW...belly laugh when Indy crawled back into your bed after breakfast. ✌️🇨🇦
Hilarious hey?! She basically walks all over the beds, finds the softest spot and then claims it. She is the connnoisseur of comfort.
Hello.....great vid again. Where did you buy your Pomoly stove. I've looked online, and found imitations but the Pomoly's like yours are great......thanks
Hello I really enjoyed your video so beautiful and relaxing and you are so right when you are out camping and just the basic things like washing your hands you really appreciate what you have back home well you and indi stay safe out there until the next one love from west Virginia USA ❤
Thank you so much Wallace.
The Silky Zubat is a great saw. Get the one with smaller teeth If you mainly cut hardwood 👌
Thanks so much. I will check that saw out.
@@adventureot Your welcome :) I did a bunch of research before i bought mine and I'm really happy with how it performs. There's quite a good youtube video from Silky Saws Australia - How to choose a Zubat Saw. I believe Abel has one now too.
😊
Thanks
Haven't commented for a while had family over from Australia so just binge watched the last few and loved every minute of it. Love the hot tent set up. Sending love from Scotland x
That's nice that you have family staying. Awesome. Glad you enjoyed the video and are up to date now. I am sitting here planning out the next trip in between video comments. Lots more adventures to come.
Fantastic can't wait x
Bloody awesome. Love it when Indi, is with quiet a character
Cheers Bobbi. Oh yes indeeedy, she is a right character. Love her to bits.
I admire you. Im a man 5'10, with some muscle and dont think i could carry a pack of that weight for an hour hike uphill. Love your and Indi's videos.
Thank you, that is so kind.
Thanks for doing another hot tent video I so love these I do hope you do met I love your content keep it up. Your goi d well. From St. Louis , Missouri, us
Thank you Lindsey
From West Chester, OH - Thank you Cathy & Indi! I watched this video while cycling on my indoor cycling bike. It was so beautiful- I’ll be rewatching soon! PS I love watching hot tent camping❤️
Thanks Linda. Hopefully I distracted you enough that you could keep riding for longer. Your YT user name goes perfectly with my image of you riding your indoor bike.
Great video! Indi doesn’t seem to mind the snow. I really liked your winter jacket! The tent stoves seem to go through a lot of wood. I can appreciate your challenge to cut enough firewood.
Yes I think having the sides of the tent open didn't help obviously, but I wanted to keep warm and have some view at the same time. No doubt if you have the tent all shut up for the majority of the time and close the damper it would eat up less wood.
Amazing camp out! Look forward to the next 🤗
THANK YOU Pranesh!!
Beautiful as always! This was just mesmeric!!!
Thank you so much Pranesh.
That’s was awesome camping. You did terrific on the hot tent set up. And you did great on your fireplace . Love it. Can’t wait for are snow and cold weather to arrived. Love Louise. Canada
Thanks so much Louise. Yes I image there are a few people in the hot hot northern hemisphere summer looking forward to a few snow flakes. And over here I am really looking forward to some longer days and warmer nights.
I use my Gomboy outback for Firewood and Pocketboy outback for collecting fatwood for starters when i need it.. Perfect 👌 But at the end of the day, find what just works for you and Indy.
Thanks Vally, sound advice. I don't know the Gomboy, I'm going to check that out.
The only good choice for a backpacking saw is the Agawa folding saw, great quality, reasonable price, packs easily. When it comes to bucking up wood for camp, check out what the Canadians use, Lost Lakes, Joe Robinet,Xander Brudznick, etc, they all use the AGawa.
Nice, thank you. I will definitely look into the Agawa saws.
Agawa saw ,in Ontario Canada
Thanks Michele!!
That meal looked amazing!
It really was!!
Again I enjoyed this video. Love that tent. Seems to have a lot of space and very comfortable. Plenty of standing room. The campsite was very nice and relaxed. Always look forward to your videos. Hopefully get up to 10,000 soon. Do you mind if I asked what brand is your blue checked hoodie shirt you had
on. Or where I can get one. Looks great and warm. Thanks for taking us into the mountains. Love it. ❤❤
Hi. It is so nice to have all the room and to be able to stand up inside. Such a treat, even if it is a bit of a weight to carry. My jacket is from Hunting and Fishing, and is their brand. It is really warm and functional. I really like it. Till next time, cathy
Thanks!
You are welcome. Thank you so much Louise.
As always, loved where you took us for “our” camp. The mountains are a sight to behold. How blessed you are to live in such a beautiful area. Indi was fun to watch too. Do you have to protect her paws with some type of ointment when you are out in the snow? Just wondered. I don’t live in an area that gets snow, or seldom gets it, so don’t know what’s customary.
Thanks for the great camp!
So glad you came along on our camp!! I had the same questions about Indi's paws in the snow. Luckily I have a good resource in an outdoor shop that specialises in adventurous dog gear and promotes dogs in the outdoors. I talked it through with them, and in these conditions she is fine without booties, or some sort of protection on her feet. If it was ice or all day snow/ice walking it would be a different story. Her breed spend all day running on frosty and snowy farmland so she is not at all bothered.
@@adventureot Thank you for the education. I live in a suburb of Fort Worth, Tx. Mostly, we have to worry about our pets paws burning on the concrete. Like this week, all week, over 100 degrees with feel like temperatures even higher with humidity.
Maybe look into a battery powered small chain saw. It zips through the medium branches and may save time. DeWalt has some decent ones if you can get that brand. Enjoyed the snow. We are in a heat advisory in Florida.
That would add quite a bit of weight to her pack, on top of everything else she carries
That would make the wood chopping SO much easier. For me though, deslifesimplified is right, I think the weight and bulk to carry it in would outweigh (pardon the pun) the benefit. Good for camps close to the car though (when in a spot where a fire can legally we lit). Thanks, Cathy
Nothing better after a nightmare shift then seeing a new video from you and Indi. What harness is Indi wearing? I’m just getting my boys gear ready for us to head over to New Zealand for a few weeks of hiking. Any recommendations on best hikes with a dog?
Glad to know the video was a welcome distraction from your day. Indi's raincoat and harness are both Ruff Wear brand. They are great quality. In terms of hikes, I would suggest looking at the Department of Conservation website and when you click on the 'walking' tab, you can choose the option 'dogs allowed' and it will show you all of your options. Best of luck.
👍👍👍 .. nice 😊.
Good Afternoon Cathy ..
-7 / -3 .. it is currently 30°C here in sunny Switzerland.
"Would you like a treat?"
I suspect that my Malti-Poo thinks the same when asked that .. 💭 "What a question" 🙄 😏.
Choice of Saws. Lars from 'Survival Russia' is a worthwhile source regarding sourcing and cutting wood for fires in the wild using a saw.
He is the real deal, living in the heart of forested Russia .. and he swears by Silky Saws (not much in Axes and almost no violent 'batoning' with a knife). The larger saws include the Gomboy, Bigboy and Katanaboy .. take a look-see when you have time.
For me, and our forests here, a little 'Felco 600' Folding Pruning Saw (Swiss Brand) is more than good enough .. and I can, if necessary get replacement blades at my local 'Baucentre'.
I love Winters. Yes, Summer means that one does not have to get 'togged and untogged' when going and returning, but for me, its worth the effort. Less ticks and biting flies too! And .. no forest fire bans.
One does not appreciate being warm and toasty, unless one has been 'chilled through' beforehand (and vice-versa) .. similar to your description of the snow, mountains and surroundings .. 'contrasts'.
Thanks for taking us along .. you both seemed to have enjoyed yourselves and until next time, take care .. Tommy
Thanks Tommy. Gosh it’s crazy to think of people sweltering in the northern summer while I struggle to warm up here. Thanks for those saw recommendations. I will look into those. Cheers, till next time. Cathy
@@adventureot 👍
Wow, was that a strong morning coffee?
Haha, yes it was. I brought enough grinds for two coffees, then just went "oh what the heck" and put it all in the one pot.
❤
Thanks
Indi needs boots for the cold ❤
I have been through a long process of working out whether or not to use them with Indi and consulting with people and decided in these conditions not to. She is a collie so used to the cold and honestly not the slightest bit bothered by the ground. Having something strapped to her foot would bother her a lot though. Thanks for looking out for her though 😊
Maybe some gumboots you think 😅 love it lol
@@vallygurney7193 How about thongs or flip flops? 😂
Don't make a girl choose. She wants a pair of each. (P.S. Trust the Aussies, lol).
Amazing! You always have the best food, luxury set up and I love how Indi looks so cosy in the sleeping bag. I have had my eye on the Cyclone Retro Jacket and wondering how you rate it? Is it true to size or do you need to size up or down (depending on layers of course).
Hi Victoria. Yes I definitely rate it. Warm and rugged and practical, good pockets etc. Good price for what you get, in my opinion. The one I am wearing is a size 10 NZ and I typically wear 10-12 so it is true to size or even maybe slightly big.
@adventureot Thanks Cathy, it looks super cosy and I love the retro look.
Could you confirm the make of your blue jacket with the special piece at the back please. It looks like just what I need. Great video again.
Thanks Joyce. It is from Hunting and Fishing in New Zealand.
Hi Cathy, we are sitting here in the Strathbogie Ranges Victoria Australia and are loving your black and blue jacket!! Can you let us know what brand and where your purchased it please :) 🙏🏻
Hi Ness. This jacket is from a shop in NZ called 'Hunting and Fishing'. They have a couple of different designs of jacket in this fabric, and different colours. It is a nice robust jacket, warm too.
@@adventureot thank you! Sadly they don’t post internationally at this time.
فيديو رائع جدا جدا جدا جدا والله اني سعيد المغامره ❤
Thank you very much Hemada
I cant understand why you use so a bad saw and so a bad axe.
😂 it’s very easy to understand, I use a bad axe and saw because that is what I have.
do you keep your fire going all night?
No, I turned it down low and let it burn out. Interestingly tho water inside the tent didn’t freeze overnight but outside it did. Must have been a little bit of residual heat (or just less wind chill). I was surprised by that.
