Don’t forget about Hero of Comberth Harbour! (the part 2 of Alicorn).
Listen to the non game version of the track as it has a slower build up but a much better finale, unlike the game version which gets intense pretty quickly then loops back around.
Edit: yup, might as well mention Awakening here too.

The Alicorn suite has 3 parts, technically 4, so please be sure to hit them all. They all build up to each other, so it'd be: Awakening, Alicorn, and then Hero of Comberth Harbor

      @olli-mattiheilio4554 Před 2 lety +1

I have to echo the above comments, Alicorn, while an excellent piece, is a part of the whole. To get the whole picture, you kind of have to do the whole trio of Awakening, Alicorn, and then Hero of Comberth Harbor, in that order. It is a build-up, much like this song you just did, only divided into three parts to match the phases in the mission.

When you listen to the song in game, the voice acting and the sounds of the lasers and APS from the arsenal bird in the game are part of the song as if they are also instruments in the orchestra. The battle sequence is paced according to song. This is peak game design.

Which harkened back to the reveal that the protagonist of AC 4, Mobius One, was evaluated to have the combat power of an entire squadron of aircraft.
So the arcade mode in one of the games is a canonical event where a remnant force was destroyed by the ISAF sending a single plane in to do it alone. Because of the crushing psychological blow doing such a thing would accomplish. While it required several reloads, in the history of Strangereal, Mobius One did it, with only AWACS and replenishment support.
A single pilot, in one plane, putting down an entire reactionary force.
Ironically, by Yellow 13's measure, Trigger might well be the better pilot.
Mobius flew alone, Trigger brought allied forces home alive.

Yessss, here we go. The game was actually delayed for this song. The game was finished, but they wanted one more song for this extra oomph. When the vocals come in it feels like you've just flown through the clouds and you're met with the unhindered blue of the sky. And when it ends for the first time you dive back into the storm below to take on the monster that awaits within.
And it's not even the last song you experience in the game. The song that comes after is pretty good as well. After this triumphant theme you hear the robotic, futuristic sounds of "Hush" starting up. And you realize...

Kazutoki Kono, producer of the Ace Combat series felt the penultimate mission lack emotional impact. He decided at the very last minute to add another new song to this mission that would make him feel goosebumps despite the game already being close to completion.
He called Keiki Kobayashi, main composer of Ace Combat and told him “I want you to make me a music track and I want it to be a great one, I want it done now.”

There is an important reason for the unusually long buildup, but saying exactly what would be both a spoiler and would risk butchering the experience. Alright, everyone here should have atleast one Arsenal Bird 'Justice' on their kill sheet.
The entire first half, the buildup, plays while you're engaging the newly arrived Arsenal Bird and its many drones. After a set amount of time the Arsenal Bird's shield, which it has been turning on and off periodically, turns on forever. As soon as the buildup finishes, offscreen characters destroy the Bird's power source. The drop into the 2nd part is specifically scripted to happen as soon as the Arsenal Bird's impenetrable shield goes down due to lack of power. Bing bang boom, you've blown up one of the most powerful superweapons ever developed.

  • @Jc88500

The game was delayed just so they could make this song. The producer wanted the song for this mission to give the players goosebumps, he asked the composer for a new track and all he said in response was “I understand”.
The resulting track was so good that they reworked the dialogue and scripting of the mission to better fit it. Delaying a game just for a piece of music was a pretty daring, so they gave it the name Daredevil. The in-universe name for this mission is also Operation Daredevil.
I wonder what’s next on your list, Hush? Alicon and Hero of Comberth Harbor? Fighters Honour? There’s still quite a bit of AC tracks with choir, and even the ones without like Liberation of Gracemeria are 100% worth checking out.

Yep, I can see the music at 4:20 hit you just like everyone else. We all love that part.
For more context, that part of the song plays exactly the moment the energy shield on the giant floating drone carrier goes down. All the aircraft present have been trying to take it down, but they can't because of the shield.
It's not Trigger (the game's protagonist), that causes that but the Erusia kingdom's princess that destroys the controls powering said shield. It's that exact moment that gives Trigger that chance to take it down. That being said, the song really sounds more epic without all the constant missile alerts blaring at you in-game ;)

Ace Combat 7's soundtrack is one of the most in-front examples of how Keiki Kobyashi builds on a bunch of leitmotifs. Now that you've listened to "Daredevil", listen back to "Charge Assault" in your own time. It's the first combat track of the game. It just shows how incredibly well symphonically put together this and his others works are. Another side note: Listen to "Diapason" in your own time from Ace Combat: Zero to kind of hear where the leitmotifs for AC7 come from, imo. It's heavily inspired, for sure.

Ah you've finally done it! The epic drop in this piece is literally programmed to play at the exact moment of the climax of the mission it plays in as you, the pilot character, ascend to one of your final crowning undertakings that forever seals your status as a legendary ace pilot: shooting down an unmanned aerial cruiser that borders the stuff of sci-fi, but mostly remains eerily within reach of us today. This is a continuing theme of the series to feature such imaginative projects or advancements in warfare and this one in particular helps beg the question about removing man from warfare, the use of drones, and the costs of continuing technological development without pause or question. You're right about the introspective part too during that first kind of softer introduction of the main theme of the song. That theme is essentially the theme of Trigger, your character, and plays in many different missions in many different arrangements, kind of marking his progress as a rising star in the Osean Air Force. That moment there sort of gives the player a chance to think back on the entire campaign as they begin the conclusion of the game.

Because for the first time ever, this battle sequence being scripted to the music piece gives me this breakdown as I played it myself. Of course, the pilot isn't going to hear music but each change reflects the scenario in battle.
0:21 - The introduction to the battle against a near-impregnable adversary that has dogged them since the war began, a reminder of the imposing presence of this airship.
1:58 - The pace settles down, the air battle continues to a sequence you are familiar with.
3:27 - Something unexpected occurs. Unless this threat is neutralised, nothing can defeat this airship. Desperation begins to settle in as all pilots have no answer to it.
4:20 - A miraculous breakthrough happens, the offensive continues as the airship is continually stripped of its facilities.
Also Marco, you have to play it to believe it - there is a palpable moment of suspense that is only present in the game, which you will not find in any of the OSTs.
PS: Since you're diving into Alicorn, would you give "Mimic" a listen? It then divides into 2 seperate pieces called "Mimic - Rage", and "Mimic - Scream". It's a rock piece, so maybe you don't have to evaluate it on video, it if its not your cup of tea.

The whole song is timed perfectly to the level. That last build up is timed so that as soon as it peaks the invincible shield protecting the last arkbird comes down and the way to shooting it down, and ending the war, is opened. The last few minutes play while you blast away at it while drones swarm around you and your allies, while also protecting the arkbird with their bodies.

As usual I love seeing how much fun you are having listening to the ace combat music! This is a very pivotal battle in the war the game takes place in. Huge build up with everyone throwing everything they have at this nearly indestructible target. The radio chatter is shear panic leading into desperation. And something happens on screen right as that drop hits that turns the battle and gives everyone that final spark to push on to win. I honestly started tearing up first time I experienced it that I crashed and had to start over lmao.
One thing I like about the song as well is how well the rhythmic dissonance works. You have all these different time signatures that weave in and out of each other and honestly represents the fur ball that is this battle the track happens in, it’s complete chaos lol.
Attack on Stonehenge is a great track where you can just feel the danger radiating from the track. Also First Flight is a very addicting track!

Ace Combat at it again with the leitmotif. The same melody can be heard from the first mission's BGM onwards. How much do you have to use a leitmotif before it becomes a hevymotif? Not sure if I've seen anyone recommending it but check out Chandelier from Ace Combat 6; it's an entirely choral piece which is a bit of a departure from the other "final boss" themes in the series but I think you'd appreciate it. Again though, thematically it fits so well with the mission it accompanies that the game is worth playing to hear it in situ.

  • @BinnyKing
    @BinnyKing Před 2 lety +5

Despite some...interesting additions to the series, at it's core Ace Combat has been a story spanning almost Thirty Years (At least when you get to 7 chronologically) of conflicts. A running theme of Greed and Mercy, Hope and Desperation, Ambition and Humility, Revenge and Forgiveness. The constant ambitions of Generals and Politicians, and the consequences it brings on soldier and civilian alike. Where the true legends are just people caught in the worst of the conflict and surviving to bring it to an end. The constant escalation of war and the heartless machines created to wage it, and the people just trying to see the next day.
Daredevil comes in near the end of 7, in a story where a nation is brought up to wage war for the ambitions of those who don't even care beyond their own dreams. Where cold machines threaten to replace soldiers to escalate a conflict to the point of never ending. Where everything has fallen so far out of control that two armies have lost all communications with their own homes. No more orders, no more doctrines, no HOPE. Until the soldiers of both sides come together, in a desperate bid to destroy the machines which were created for this war, to end the fighting and, if not bring peace, at least earn some REST.
Soldiers, civilians, even convicted CRIMINALS come together in a massive unified but chaotic effort to save the world, the second half of the song signaling the moment when a massive battle with no real end in sight suddenly changes, when a convict and (I shit you not) an honest to God PRINCESS create an opportunity for the Hero to end the threat, even if it's still a harrowing battle just to USE it.
The end of the song, where the music is winding down but no less intense, where you watch as the war machine crashes into the sea, you're still tense, waiting for one last surprise, one last enemy to appear and force you to fight just one more time.
Ace Combat has always had a soundtrack to pull you into the action around you, even without notice, so when it pulls out the stops and comes in hard, it comes in HARD, and you just KNOW you're in for a ride.

Daredevil was my gateway drug into Ace Combat music. Glad to see you reacting to so many iconic tracks from this series, along with those from other games.
An interesting thing to note is how the story of each game tends to subvert the first impressions given by the music. You described Zero as a patriotic national anthem, yet the story constantly questions the value of the state. Daredevil is indeed a triumphant return, but it's also a song of redemption for multiple characters. On the surface, AC music extols the glory of war, but in context it's very anti-war.
That said, reactions are a dime a dozen; what makes them worthwhile is seeing people genuinely moved- which usually applies to folk who have a real passion for the subject and come from a relevant field, like you. Whenever possible, I'd enjoy seeing you explain more of the technical aspects of music using your opera background, such as in your God-Shattering Star reaction. Looking forward to more.

The use of the vocals -- particularly the soprano descant with the do-re-mi, fa-mi-la leitmotif which represents the player character -- is incredibly impactful. And yes, the "action" sequence that goes with this song is absolutely amazing, they literally timed the song's tracks with the action, so when the vocal drops hard, it's perfectly timed with a major plot event

People have pointed out to you that Ace Combat has strong thematic and naming ties to religion, myth, fantasy, and fairy tales. In that sense, this could be called Dragon Slayer.
The Arsenal Bird has brought out all the tricks, including a sustained laser emitter (fire breathing), you return to the space elevator (wizard's tower) with there being a princess confined there (no really, an actual princess).
You fight to destroy an inhuman thing that rules the skies and rains death. All the while a princess looks on from a seemingly impossibly tall structure. You are a shining warrior leading the charge to decide the war. It is no easy battle though. The enemy's defense seem impervious to all, but then they fail from an unexpected ally, and you have an opening.
