  • Why is Jaywick so poor? Today, we want to focus some more on Jaywick. If you’re living in Jaywick, please take this video as one of those produced to shed light on the predicament of your place of abode. If you’ve once lived in the town, we hope you can identify with what you’d see in this video. If it does or doesn’t reflect your experience while you were resident in Jaywick, you have an opportunity to state your experience in Jaywick in the comment section after watching this video to the end. For those who may have a reason to go to Jaywick, this video is a must-see. At any rate, this discussion is going to answer the question, why is Jaywick so poor?
    Is Jaywick Actually Poor?
Let’s establish a fact here before we proceed. If Jaywick isn’t poor, we don’t have any need to find the reason for the poverty in Jaywick. But when we can agree that the village is poor, we can begin to query the reason for that. So, is Jaywick really poor? What do the facts and figures say?
If you’ve seen our videos that explain poverty in the United Kingdom, you likely have noticed how poorly Jaywick ranks. We’re not going to state what has been highlighted in those videos now. We’ve proved how Jaywick is among the most deprived places in England. It has also featured on lists of the poorest towns in the UK. All these are evidence of poverty and deprivation in the town.
According to recent data, 57 percent of people in Jaywick are in income deprivation. This means that they’re either not earning money or not earning enough and they have to depend on benefits. The analysis of that data concludes that Jaywick’s economy has continued to suffer ever since 1983 when Butlin closed its holiday camp. This is already explaining why it is poor. However, we’re not yet there; we’re just establishing for now, that the village is poor.
Even as recently as 2022, Jaywick was named one of the worst places to live in England. This was the result of a poll of over 110,000 respondents that spoke to the satirical website iLiveHere.com.
    What Residents Say
We have earlier called out to those who have once lived in the town to tell us what they see while there. Please don’t forget to do this later. However, let’s see the town through the eyes of its current residents. Their words will be proof of the assertion that Jaywick is poor, and beyond that, tell us what its poverty can be attributed to. While they’re happy enough to talk frankly about the situation of things in their town, they don't want to give their names and we understand because according to them, “in case we get our windows put in." Since we got their words with the assurance of anonymity, we would not mention their names in this video.
The UN poverty rapporteur, as a part of uncovering how widespread poverty in the UK is, attended a public meeting in Jaywick. In reporting back to his organization, he mentioned a litany of complaints from people in the town about how their benefits are being cut. Due to the inability of the council in charge of the town to fulfill its obligations, people who are obviously disabled are classed as fit to work. They also complained that the government’s Universal Credit scheme supposedly designed to simplify the whole benefit payments system is actually causing them to be penniless for weeks on end.
They mentioned the town’s struggle with environmental sanitation. Someone who had lived in Jaywick for 15 years said while complaining bitterly about the situation: “Residents bagged it up, it's totally disgusting and I called the council this morning, they were well aware of the problem.” Another famous resident lamented the effect of Jaywick’s poverty on the sandy beach in the town, saying: “It's embarrassing, isn't it? We're only 60 miles from London, in the affluent southeast and here we are in the most deprived place in the country.”

My 102 year old mother in law remembers coming to Jaywick on holiday. Was really nice back in the day. She said they were chalets and were not made to last. They were not supposed to live in them full time. I believe the beach is lovely.

Jaywick was never designed for year-round living ... just holiday places. This made them relatively cheap, which then attracted the poorest of society, who could not afford anything else. Jaywick Sands are actually beautiful, but what needs to happen ... 1. fix/fortify the sea defences to prevent another flood of the 1950s. 2. Bulldoze everything ... and start over!

great comment. I would buy and retire there if the sea defences were upgraded. I would love to live in a sea front property

In think is was sometime around 1996 or 1997 that I visited the Jaywick regeneration scheme. My wife and even met a local councillor while visiting the regeneration shop. He assured us that we would not recognise Jaywick in a few years time. I don't think this was the designed outcome for Jaywick?

Jaywick is on the flood plain. building and car insurance is going to be expensive there. I would love to retire to a beach front property there, but it floods easily.

The reason Jaywick is so "poor!" As you say, is because quite a few resident in the Clacton area, who are unemployed, get put there, because the council can pay less rent, also there are many retired people who buy houses there because they are very cheap, and they can afford to own their own property mortgage free, maybe retiring early, or moving there after retirement because they couldnt quite afford paying off a mortgage in a more expensive area. Also, some of the really bad, run down housing, is filled up with the unemployable, maybe ex criminals or people with addictions, that cant get a decent reference from past housing land lords, because they have not looked after their last rented homes. The council seems to put people there that no one else wants to rent to. This is far from most residents, most are great decent people, but a higher percentage than normal, is what makes up the less desirable residents of Jaywick. I bet the area has more residents with a criminal record, than most other areas of Essex.

Jaywick has been the cheapest place to live in Essex for four decades all the most desperate people and problem cases end up living there, Clacton is going the same way its a dumping ground so many coastal towns that had declining tourism have ended up like this to some degree.
There are no development funds to fix things in these towns and any money there is gets wasted on ill-thought-out schemes to revive tourism.
Top 10 worst coastal towns is a good video idea.
