Poverty in the UK: Forgotten by the Crown

  • Here's the revised text:
Welcome to the paradoxical world of England. Despite boasting a historically low unemployment rate of 3.6%, the specter of poverty looms large, affecting over 15 million Britons-that's nearly a quarter of the population!
Rampant inflation and surging energy costs in recent months have thrust millions into the throes of poverty. The situation is further exacerbated by the hyper-flexibility of wages and the increasing trend of uberization among hundreds of thousands of self-employed individuals. Add to this the impact of over a decade of severe cuts in social assistance, initiated during David Cameron's government, coupled with a state disengagement from public services.
As a consequence, the United Kingdom, which only had a handful of food banks in 2010, now grapples with over 2,000. Life expectancy is stagnating, even plummeting in the most disadvantaged regions, where residents succumb to the grim realities of the "shit life syndrome"-a lethal blend of multiple pathologies and addictions resulting in premature death, a stark contrast to other regions where people live a decade longer.
In response to the government's shortcomings, millions of Britons have embraced voluntary work to survive. This marks the rise of the "Big Society," a concept championed in 2010 by then-Prime Minister David Cameron-the very architect of the austerity policy!
Embark on a journey with us as we delve into the lives of England's working poor, individuals grappling with the challenges of relying on solidarity for survival. From the poverty-stricken seaside town of Blackpool in the north-west to the rural county of Cumbria on the Scottish border-where public services and transport have nearly disappeared-to Ashton-under-Lyne, a factory town paralyzed by the absence of economic prospects, witness the reality of contemporary Great Britain.

Yes but the media works hand-in-hand with the Palace to constantly lie about how much Royals actually do so many people are very deluded. Diana hinted HERSELF at this in several old documentaries. She actually giggled about what those in her job consider “work.” How the family detested her honesty! She had her flaws like we all have but the Royals today are NOTHING like her. William too.

We are a 6 figure income couple and had very little saved and not much cash lying around the preverbal".
    '...don't have $500 for an
emergency" that was us. The big thing was debt all kinds of it, cars mortgage (although our home isn't a high price one), student loans for our kids, and of course credit cards.
One day we just got sick of being broke and went total scorched earth and became frugal overnight. Paid it all off, it took almost 5 years but now we have no debt and this year our savings rate is 50% on basically the same income that had us perpetually broke. So for us it is mainly staying out of debt and watching our spending, at first it was a real effort to save in our HISA and 401Ks but now it's actually fun watching our money grow. No car or vacation or neighborhood is worth being broke or financially unstable.

That 70% single motherhood rate that has been caused by kicking the father out of the home for a paycheck is wonderful.😅 please feel free to be embarrassed over your stupid comment. It's easy to say things like that when you're uneducated and don't understand how a country actually operates. Government is garbage at everything and it produces nothing. Everything that it ever has, had, or will have is stolen from the citizens of the country. They take their cut, give most of the rest to their donors, and then leave morsels for these programs in order to destroy communities that should just be standing up on their own and taking care of themselves but instead they try to buy votes. And sickeningly it works because crapping another kid means more money. I suggest you actually learn something before you speak out loud again without permission from an adult.

The Royals also ignore the plight of BRITISH veterans. They do the photops with children, go to specifically chosen elder care facilities or nice veteran’s homes. They lend their influence and name to various charities, but there are never reports of the CHANGES any of this brings. Parties simply raising more money with little accountability where every pound GOES is rife for financial shenanigans. This is why the late DIANA was respected. She refused to simply do sanitized photops for charity which were designed mostly to help the Royal NOT the victims of misfortune. DIANA did much off camera and against her “advisers.” Some of the fruit her efforts bore are evident today. So this is one piece, just one piece, of where changes need to be made.

I lived in the UK in the past. I visited again this Christmas and was shocked by the number of homeless people I witnessed. I was heartbroken to see middle aged people begging for a penny. I saw other signs of poverty, deterioration of infrastructure, fall in the quality of transport services and other things. I love the UK and have been dreaming of returning there, but I wonder if it is really worth it. I do not know if London has been worse since Brexit, but the North where I stayed has taken a turn for the worse demonstrably. It makes me very sad that Brexit happened the way it did and the UK government still has the nerve to publish on its websites news bulletins regarding the "benefits" of Brexit and the "freedoms" of Brexit. Why did it have to be like that? I was really surprised by the run-down appearance of many things I remembered in much better condition in the past. The only thing I hope is that we rebuild bridges between the two sides of the Channel. maybe slowly, gradually and with small steps of good faith, but it is necessary and the only way ahead.

Things are not pretty in a lot of countries these days. There's a reason why we Indians live in with parents and some even with Grand parents.

And where do you suggest these 'extra' people sleep? In the bathtub? You are talking about India, a hot place. Indians don't need heating like that!! Surely that's obvious. @@saturationstation1446no. Once Great Britain has a government in the post-Christian state. Example, and there are many more, thousands of shuttered churches all over England. Check out the media-loving and much loved recent Christmas Carol service. I watched and read the entire programme details. Kate’s statement made the evening about HER platform of children and baby welfare and caring - NOT about THE BABY born The Lord Jesus Christ Whom CHRISTMAS is all about. The Name of the Lord Jesus was never uttered by the Anglican ministers or Kate. How very disrespectful to Our Lord. They only used the generic non offensive to false religions “God” in the service and prayers. The carols sung thankfully were good and honored Jesus as the Reason for the Season. Those officiating did not honor Him as such. The Royal Christmas cards do not honor CHRISTmas at all. I say these things to indicate how firm and acceptable is the lack of respect for real Christianity in the UK. The Royals are not even questioned about this by “fervent” Christians. So, I must disagree with you based on the facts of life in England today.

The transportation system is a nightmare in the US as well when my parents died. I actually had to sell the house and move 10 minutes away so that I could get transit because I’m blind unfortunately, right after I moved, they knocked down half of the routes for the disabled routes meaning I had to stop working, because I could not afford to go to work, and when I did go to work, I actually ended up paying to go to work because Just going across the street you think Lyft or Uber cost about $10 so around roof is $20 walk across the street . The buses that we have for the disabled. Also you can end up riding around on them for three hours. It’s really a nightmare so to go to a single doctors appointment can take you all day and will you’ll end up waiting at the doctors for hours because they can’t wait for you, so you have to make sure that you give them like a two hour Headstart when you want pick up it’s it’s crazy I’ve actually canceled appointments just because transportation is too costly or too hard for me to deal with and now we are having drug shortages and I’ve had to pay triple with my location used to be three months ago and it was pay the extra price I don’t get it

Just unbelievable. I live in Germany and soon it's gonna be the same here. I mean, I'm not on social welfare and as far as I know it's still somehow working here, but as an average working person, with the rampant inflation and raising costs of living, one can barely make the ends meet as of late. Indeed, one is scared to turn the heater on... Having a roof over your head is slowly becoming luxury! Many people find themselves paying much over half of their net into the rent costs. I feel sooo sad to see the elderly and sick people - people who really need support, not receiving the help that they deserve. I litteraly cried. Yet, here, the migrants who have never payed a dime into the system, receive 550 eur per person per month + social housing paid. Most of them are young healthy men. All of this at the expense of tax payers, who in some years, when they may need the help, will end up exactly the same - because everybody knows that money is running out thanks to irresponsible governments who are living in some alternative reality. Western countries are not so great for living anymore! Theoretically, we are one of the biggest economies in the world, but the inequality has become enormous. Our states make us share all the costs there are to pay, but the profits are never shared, they're privatized and they go only to a handful of "chosen ones", financial elites who can live their luxury lives. Most of us work hard every day only to be paid a shitty salary, especially compared to the cost of living. The governments have compleyely forgotten, that a healthy middle class is the most important pillar of a healthy democracy. The middle class has been being slowly killed off in the recent years and it's so sad to see people in need end up like this. This must end in social unrest at some point...

Always wondered why Boomers are so opposed to fiat currency.
Had the gold standard been maintained, they wouldn't be able to do their favourite activity (being in debt for luxuries) anywhere near as much as they do now.

So much pomp and circumstance. I looked at the crown in that meetibg and saw a lot of riches. Their coffers seem quite fat. For them. Smh. Damn shame. Gonna be MT days again.

Yes but you will note Royals tone down a bit with ostentatious displays. Wm and Kate on that tour arriving on this ridiculous Kingly barge looked sadly out of step with poverty-ridden folk. You will not see them doing that again.

Unfortunately, we have way too many spongers who have over the last 50 years coupled with unfettered immigration have attributed to the down turn of the country and of course multi national corporations who do not pay! I grew up on a council estate in rural Cornwall where there was no money. 70% of the estate were single mums with multiple children from different partners, Hardly anyone worked or had the ambition to do so due to a myriad of reasons. The lack of housing and the unreal house prices forced me to leave at 25. I now live in Asia have a degree, a home, decent wage something my own country could not provide. Hope it turns around for you all.
