America's Broken Dreams

- The poor bore the brunt of the subprime and credit crisis in 2008. Today, it's the middle class's turn. The impoverishment of the American middle class is stark. In a country that has embraced liberalism as a creed, there is no safety net to speak of. For those who lose their jobs, the consequences are immediate and devastating.
Larry Dodson, 52 years old, used to lead a major customer service department. But two years ago, he lost his job and his home. Today, he lives in a motel room with his wife and two children, making just $820 a month by hosting tourists at Disney World. After paying the motel fees, he's left with only $70 for food and other necessities.
Terry was a sales director and enjoyed a comfortable life until he was laid off. He ended up moving from one motel to another in his car and was eventually deemed "economically unfit" to care for his six children. The three oldest were placed in foster care. Currently, there are 1,800 children growing up in motels around Disney World. They constantly change schools because their parents are forced to find cheaper housing. - Zábava

At the very beginning of Covid both my wife and I lost our jobs after working at the same place for 23 years. No severance pay ... company declared bankruptcy and that was that. Within a month I was diagnosed with kidney cancer and needed surgery and treatment. No more work benefits so all our years of savings went into my treatment and paying our mortgage. 3 years later I sold our house and moved 1200 miles away and bought a small 2 bedroom bungalow. If wasn't for our savings and that our mortgage was paid off in 2021 we would be in the same situation. It is terrifying when you almost lose everything you worked so hard for.
Just curious why you didn’t get cobra or insurance on the private market? If I were in your situatuation I’d like to think I’d have bit the bullet and paid up despite the high cost. I was brought up to never go without insurance so maybe I was privileged that way.

None of the houses are for sale, all are for rent only. There is no law in Georgia that prevents this from happening. Home rental prices in the Atlanta area are going up. why do we refuse to acknowledge one of THE most powerful factors in life
I‘ll never understand why the (working) poor always have lots of kids. If I can barely sustain myself, maybe also struggle mentally or with substance abuse, WHY in the World would I have children to further complicate matters for all? I‘m solid middle class, and I only have one kid, as to provide a solid foundation to a child is about 250,000$ - and that’s not even counting college/university! Love is a great thing, but it doesn’t feed you and it doesn’t provide you education etc. Children growing up with adult worries are in a lot of cases not ideally equipped to be successful individuals. Kids should be able to have a childhood, a puberty in which they revolt and test boundaries, and through that learn the responsibilities of an adult. None of these children shown here has that path ahead of them. It’s just sad! Don’t have kids if you can’t provide for them!
They most all inherited poor life skills from their parents, and are sadly passing them onto their children.
you're not poor until the firm shuts down and the kids were born by then. damn it. why can't ya just turn lives off and on, like employment?
Literally no one is rich enough to stop working and be able to provide for their kids. That's what it would require to have the kind of security you are talking about. The story for most of these families is they were doing fine until an unexpected loss of a job.
one kid costing that much should be raising an alarm but nobody cares about that
@@sakshigupta8603 Yeah, but it’s only going up, when you want to keep a certain standard. Which again widens the gap between rich and poor. Education is the key, but access to it isn’t equal either.

Im living in another country. We as family did that after c19, but the struggle to reach to city services would be too much for us since we are not getting any younger, and i also worried about the safety. So we put in on sale now. What i want to tell is, that doesnt always work either.
Tiny Houses are obscenely expensive. You are giving stupid advice.
@@SiberiaDreams not sure who your reply is for however if it's directed at me you are grossly incorrect and clearly have no clue about off grid life, housing, how many options there are on how to get things done.... Yes if you buy a tiny house upfront that can be expensive. Having said that it's common to start in an old RV, travel trailer, van life van or bus. After that you can learn to build your own tiny house or save money for help in building it or save money to buy one new or used. You can also opt to purchase a tiny house workable shed , these come in many sizes, shapes, price ranges and you can over time build it out into a tiny house. You can build a dustcrete house, an earthship house, a sandbag house, a straw bale house, or a wood house. The options are many... You can again do it over time. When you've completed the set up and building you will own it free and clear, no rent, no mortgage, etc and only have to concern yourself with the property taxes. If you buy the property wisely the property taxes will be low .... Etc.. So no it's not insanely expensive to go off grid though of course it can be if you just run to a tiny house manufacturer and buy a luxury model tiny home first thing... Needless to say even if you do that, as long as you can pay it off quickly, you will never throw money down the toilet again forever paying mortgage or rent - every month for average 30 years on mortgage regardless of whether your income stops or not. If income reduces or stops you can't pay that mortgage and you lose that house.. With rent it's endless, the landlord can raise the rent, and if income reduces you get evicted . So pick an option.....
@@SiberiaDreams btw as an addition: I live my advice. I have my property paid off free and clear. I have my property taxes paid years into the future. I have a class c RV and travel trailer on site both can be lived in. I built two tiny homes on site. I built a four room barn . I have two more tiny homes that should be completed by the end of this coming summer. The property is fully fenced. I have three garden areas and small livestock. If I lost my job tomorrow I could easily live on the property in decent comfort, eat free, run phone and computer via solar set up I got done last summer. Leisurely apply for a new job ... The only thing that would not be leisurely about it would be the payments on some other parcels I'm working on getting paid off -- like the problem with either rent or mortgage that monthly payment is the killer except with traditional mortgage it let's 30 years on average and with rent it'll NEVER ever end.... I was able to even fight for my minor children for years against a millionaire sociopath because I live off grid like this.. Something I couldn't have done on my income at all if I paid rent or mortgage... So please tell me how on earth teaching others how to do it is stupid and setting them up for a life they cannot afford. It's absolutely not .. People who can't afford mortgage or rent go homeless or throw all their money away on motel rooms. I can pick what spot, home, I want to sleep in any night of the week and I have no payments. It's all paid off except the additional properties I'm paying on for my kids..... In case you're concluding I must be rich, nope. I earn $20 an hour... I did all this between earning $20 an hour for the first year, then a job that paid $13 an hour for two years, and unemployed due to the covid pandemic shutdown.. And also had two jobs , not at the same time, right after the covid shutdown, temporary jobs, that paid only $11 an hour (one job was circle k clerk for a few months and the other was ups warehouse for a few months because other jobs weren't available after the lockdowns,)... That's how rich I was and am to get this done... Also I had no savings, no inheritance, etc . I got zero dollars from the millionaire ex , instead I got to pay $300 an hour for lawyers to fight for my kids. I get no spousal support and no child support income.. Clearly what I did anyone can do.. I also have three heart conditions, autoimmune disease and I didn't know how to build anything when I started...... So again anyone can do it...... I started by paying the property off free and clear fast by making as many extra payments as I could. Knocked that out in about a year. The minimum property payment was like $140 a month. I paid more each month. Then I bought an old motor home for $450. I put the motor home on the property and like instant magic I had a reasonably safe, extremely cozy little house to live in off grid.. Next I did the barn. I worked on the fence, and ended up buying a fifth wheel travel trailer for another living unit...I finished the fence and built the first tiny house by the second summer on the property and I just kept going from there.....
@@SiberiaDreams these motel dwellers are in many cases going to end up on the street or living in cars and going down hill from there. My advice is a really good alternative that I live myself. Some info on that and how it's smart is in my two longer comments....

The first story is basically reenforcing the fact that in America you CANNOT have a family until you are incredibly financially stable with multiple investments and savings then you can safely plan on having 1 child
This is absolutely disgusting that our government has allowed this to happen. I would be one of them if it weren't for my daughter letting me live with her and her family. It isn't so much the jobs, it is the cost of living, ie housing, food, gas, utilities. No one can afford a house today and next will be a decent vehicle. Apartments have delusions of grander thinking that they are justified charging mortgage rates for an apartment, no garage, no yard, live on top of each other and pay 1800 for a shitty 1 bdrm. I remember in the 1990's you could buy a brand new home for under 100K in Phx, AZ, 2 bedroom apartments were 550 or less, food and utilities were affordable. It is so sad that young couples making 70K a year cannot buy a home, what happened to starter homes, to the American dream.... it is long gone and nobody seems to care.

The trade is community for money, but as the cost of living rises above wages is it still worth it? If at the end of the day you're just trying to keep your head above water then you might as well go back to your hometown where your family is.
I am 29 years old. I'm from a Russian village, work as an auto parts salesman. The same could be said about the US but this difference now compared to centuries past. Is gun ownership and the millions who own them with ex-military personal too. Now, many years later, it's really sad watching this nation collapse. Not by war, but by greed from it's own inside. It feels very strange that such a strong nation is actually going under, even though it's downfall is somewhat slow.

The one thing that most people don’t seem to grasp about poverty is children. Most impoverished people alway have 2+ kids, usually more. I don’t care if you have a degree, the child factor keeps a person from prosperity, for the most part. I wish more folks would understand this. If you can’t take care of yourself, don’t add kids to the equation.
That’s easy to say, but having children is ALWAYS selfish, no matter how much money you have. Unless you are god(I know many people believe they are god), you cannot control most of what happens in the life of any human you bring into the world. I accept that having children is selfish, and I don’t judge people for doing it. We are not rational creatures; we are emotional ones, particularly when under the type of chronic stress that all modern humans experience. You may believe you wouldn’t have children if you were in the shoes of another person, but if you were them, you’d do exactly what they do.

I’m one of the lucky ones but my life still sucks.
I’m 45 and have a decent job in tech. But I had to leave a job back in 2008 due to a mental health crisis (something we don’t seem to care about at all in the US), and that permanently ruined my life.
I had to go into a ton of credit card debt just to pay for massively expensive health insurance for my family.
Today I make more money than I ever thought possible, yet I can just barely make ends meet to feed my family and pay my bills. Rent keeps increasing about 6-8% every year. credit card companies keep rising the interest. Groceries are absurdly expensive and keep increasing.
Meanwhile my mental health is deteriorating and forcing me to miss work, to the point where I’m worried I’ll lose my job. When that happens, I’ll be in the next one of these documentaries. Or maybe I’ll just end things. Who knows.
This country is shit. I’d leave if I had the means but I don’t.
Leave to where? Where would these problems be easier to manage?
I am not going to tell you that your feelings do not matter, that would be very uncaring and a horrible thing to say. I will say to you...seek God through His Word and through His son Christ Jesus. He said that He would be with you always, even unto the end of the world. Please start reading the Gospels, start in any order you wish but I recommend starting with the Gospel of St. John. When you read, believe every word is from God our creator, our Father and that every word is true. Trust me, He will fill you with Love and a Strength you never thought was possible for you. He will deliver healing to your spirit and heart and life and His spirit will drive out anything that is encouraging you to "end it". The Lord loves you more that the stars and galaxies in the sky. Why? Because you are His Child, made in His Image. Trust and believe in Him and his word, repent of all things that are not of God and determine in your heart to follow Him daily. Get baptized in the future when you can and be filled with the Holy Spirit my friend. God loves you and so do I. I will keep you in prayer.
your brother in Christ,
Paul.
Your imaginary god has never helped anyone....least of all children being abused by pirest and who pray for rescue. No reply. @@prodigal1970
I understand because I have severe PTSD from childhood abuse. Working sick was a nightmare. I eventually had to go on disability but it barely covered basic expenses and I’m single.
i understand. hope at least my words help. im lucky just like you.
It’s scary being broke with kids. 😢
and really strange that these people would set themselves up for this. no plan, no education, no money. How about not having kids?
Some accidentally get pregnant, others have kids for the benefits, some for the experience, yet some feel they should because of societal expectations, some others just because they can, some others,to fulfill lifelong dreams, some due to pressure from parents, some others, just to fit in,some never had a family,so the point is that the reasons are varied but the sad part, like u understand is that many do not plan for them and are not financially capable of taking care of them. You would think that that should be a prerequisite for having kids but apparently not.
@@chizobauchay2024 I agree that unplanned pregnancy happens every day. But anyone who has been corralled into motherhood without a plan better get smart quick. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
What’s scarier is that broke people choose to have kids, and society just accepts this and foots the bills. On and on the cycle goes.
Its scary being single with a house thats paid for and broke I cant even imagine carrying a load like a wife or kids
Great time to learn a trade. Plumber, Electrician, HVAC, etc.
Everything is choice no one told em to have kids knowing they are poor and not in the best financial state
Incredible, always looked up to America, wish you all the best, greetings from Holland
True words. Same here!
man, how the mighty can fall i suppose... Holland isn't looking to different nowadays, you'd know.
But hey, as long as you follow a passion & make it show. Somebody's gonna want you out of the snow.
So i belive. Just try your luck!
"Curacáo kan altijd nog!" 😂❤ lol
Notice all the people in this video have a squad of children. Its fine but you can't afford them. I made it,on my own too. Living the good life in Florida by myself, w/ my dogs!
Holland beer is good❕ Also wish u the best aswell🫡
This really left me with a big tear. These Kids are in a struggle which consequences will be companion for the rest of their lifes and maybe their childrens life. Be human, be positive, be strong!
A man at 13 because he wants to keep his family together. When asked about his dreams and he said "mostly nightmares and stuff". That made me break down.
Don’t ever move to San Diego looking for work, there’s no jobs and cost of living is crazy. Poor woman is driving around town on $5.50 gal gas.
This doc is a good one even though it's about a decade old. Keep pushing the vast majority of us are in somewhat similar situations either a little bit better or a little bit worse
Everybody is paycheck to paycheck
The situation with the homeless is worse now. They talk about solutions but nothing changes.
It's so heartbreaking. I think of the kids going through it and it makes me tear up. I wish I had billions to help everyone. Crazy to think there are people so rich out there that they could fix the issues, and they won't lift a finger.
This is what capitalism is about
@@MrBuckeye401you are in idiot. Capitalism is what brings you out of poverty. Ask Russians when millions died
Meh are ancestors went through worse. At least we have a tv phone and maybe car in this depression compared to great depression and all the famine before. We good this time
The problems are so complex that just throwing money at it will not solve it. For example-lack of family planning, drug abuse, mental health issues, lack of financial education, lack of affordable housing options, inability to control people due to the first amendments rights and freedoms (if I want 10 kids I will have them), destruction of the nuclear family and what is defined as a family, feminism and liberalism, no political will to change entrenched systems of social welfare and on and on...feel free to add some more.
@@gold707786with no real safety net and a very sober social system people that crush under the pressure. They drown.
Yeah, I’m definitely not having kids. Thanks for the reality check
God Bless those families with lots of little kids too. They are trying to smile through it all
