  • Why is Jaywick so poor? Anytime you find Jaywick in the news, it’s often in the statistics as the poorest ward in Britain. It had been included among England’s most deprived places. Many of the viewers might not fully appreciate how terrible the situation of things in this town is since have given it our full coverage.
The condition of this place is not improving at all. If it is changing, it is for the worse, not the better. To fully appreciate the seriousness of the level of depravity in this town, we want to devote an entire video to discussing Jaywick as the most deprived place in the United Kingdom. But let’s start by introducing you to Jaywick.
    Where Is Jaywick?
Jaywick is a coastal village. It is in the Tendring district in the northeast of Essex, England. Located close to, Clacton-on-Sea, toward the west, it lies on the North Sea coast of England. It’s about 60 miles (or 97 kilometers) from London.
The place was built in the 1930s on a parcel of land which was originally fields and salt marsh; not suitable for any form of agriculture. The entrepreneur Frank Stedman who purchased it in 1928 planned low-cost, affordable holiday homes for working-class families. That was how Jaywick became a popular holiday resort throughout the 1930s for Londoners and residents of Essex to go and enjoy their summer.
    Then, the Second World War
No thanks to World War II, the fate and lot of Jaywick turned bad. Many homes in Essex and other parts of England were lost to the war as a result of bombings. People relocated to their homes in Jaywick. Don’t forget, however, that these were just holiday homes. They were designed and constructed as temporary residences, not inhabited for a long time. So the houses were thin and small. But a shortage of housing after the war forcefully converted those properties to permanent residences.
Since they were originally substandard, these houses were abandoned when World War II ended. The local community wouldn’t allow the demolition of the properties. This should give you an idea of why most houses you see today in the village are in a state of disrepair. As an unplanned town, Jaywick currently has significant problems. It is at a high risk of flooding. The Tendring council in charge of the area says that if any major flood occurs within the next 50 years, the sea wall will be overwhelmed and the village will be swept away. Besides, the unemployment rate in the area is just too high to be considered for habitation.
    A Disturbing Revelation at First
When the Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2010 first included seaside the town of Jaywick on the list as one of the most deprived areas in England, it didn’t go down well in some quarters. Attempts were made to reject such a description. But in the 2015 measurement of deprivation in the UK, Jaywick topped the 32,844 small areas or neighborhoods as the most deprived. Again, it was named the most deprived place in 2019, for the third time.
This Essex town received international coverage during the last US election after the election campaign advert for a congressional candidate featured it. An image of Jaywick with unpaved roads, dilapidated buildings, and littered roads was used and a stern warning was placed on the picture:

If every tenant cleared up round their own property it would
make a start to bring this town back to where it was at the
start.Developers do not build slum areas, these are made by
    the residents.

When I was a child I did have holidays in Jaywick in the 70s and 80s but in more recent years whenever i have returned to that area I have only really gone to Jaywick twice and I was shocked at how it looked. Shattered childhood memories and not somewhere I would want to go back to.

Just to put you right. At around 40 seconds you say: "To fully appreciate the level of 'depravity' in this town..." This is entirely the wrong noun. The correct noun you are needing is 'Deprivation'.

50 years ago, my working class family went on holiday to Jaywick sands. I can remember the name of the place we stayed, it was called " Sunbeam Ave" we used to hire a four wheeled bike, with 2 people side - by - side. I loved it!!!. My dad, mum would go to the club during the day, and we would play games at night...the toilets were outside. I'll never forget Jaywick. How sad to see it all go...R.I.P

In 2020 and 2021 I was delivering mobility scooters sold online for a living all over the UK. I had the unfortunate job of delivering right in the heart of the shanty town twice. It is every bit as bad as the media states and I was getting a lot of attention being in a relatively new hire van. It didn't help that the customer handed me £100 cash in broad daylight to pay for his battery upgrade with pretty much half the street watching out there window. As I was taking my tools back to the van on the main road near at the sea front after making some adjustments there was a gang coming my way making a lot of noise with large dogs. I didn't bother packing things away, I jumped straight in the van and got out of there. After going around a couple of corners I stopped and sorted things out and took the opportunity to get a few pics on my phone.
If I go back there it will be in a rusty MK4 Golf or a rat van to fit in with the population. I still show off the pictures and talk about the place to this day. I might have been somewhere worse but I can't remember where.

I believe you can squarely put the blame on TDC for the miss givings of Brooklands. I also feel this incessant need to lump Jaywick with Brooklands courses confusion and is to blame for some of the problems. Had TDC completely sepperated the needs of Jaywick and Brooklands, I think we would have had a different outcome and the money to deal with the problems in the 70s and 80s. People don't seem to remember or report the fact that TDC offered people that owned plots during the 70s in Brooklands £50 a plot and the Jaywick resident association rejected the offer, which quite frankly was insulting as the plots started at £50 in the 30s. After that, the TDC decided to put mains sewage into Brooklands and told residences to bring their homes up to building codes for the time. An almost impossible task as these were simple 2 room buildings for the use of holiday homes. The question should be, what can the TDC do now to recompense the poor decision-making of the 70s and 80s. I believe they should find every owner of every plot and work out who owns what and sort out the bad landlords by enforcing the building code onto them. When they can't, compulsory purchase them. All abandoned plots owners should be giving the same choice. All owners that live in their own homes, should be helped with grants. Once the wheat from the chaff has been sorted out. Clean out all the empty plots and rebuild council housing on them, with a new mix of commercial properties to rent. Where their is commerce, there is always hope.

Ha ha.. Jaywick in Clacton on Sea in Essex near Colchester I moved from Clacton on Sea to Birmingham 6 months ago, believe me you don't want to be walking around Jawick by yourself especially at night time you'll get Robbed.
I'm a black guy and I had to watch my back around there .. jaywick is full of crack and heroine addict's and the council put people there who are anti social and caused trouble in areas the council relocated them from.
But Jawick is right on the beach so fill your boots 😂
PS Clacton on Sea locally is call Cracton because of the crack cocaine epidemic there
