  • Solomonster reacts to the shocking news of Cody and Brandi Rhodes leaving AEW with Cody likely ending up back in WWE. He discusses the likely reasons why this happened, including thoughts from Kenny Omega, as well as the most telling part about this as it relates to Cody's contract and Tony Khan, why this all being a "work" would make no sense, the past comments Cody has made about WWE, the best time for him to return to the promotion and potential feuds waiting for him.

I was calling the move by Cody hypocritical since the moment it was announced he was leaving. But everyone has to admit at this point that in hindsight, Cody made the smart move. Look at all the guys TK has brought in. Adam Cole has been out for months. Punk is gone. Keith Lee is in a tag team. Danielson hasn't been in a proper feud in what feels like months. Cesaro is fighting Jericho over a title for a promotion that doesnt exist.. No one has made the impact in terms of ratings or growth we all hoped for. If anything, considering all the bad press AEW has dealt with over the last few months with bad booking and backstage bs, constantky referencing wwe on tv. AEW is arguably weaker and in a worse position than they were a year ago.
Meanwhile Cody got a heros return and cemented himself as a huge babyface potentially being the one to take down Roman Reigns after that incredible performance with Seth at Hell in a Cell after tearing his trap. Add that with the aftermath of Vince returning and all the positives we've seen in terms of changes and roster moves since Triple H took iver creative.

Cody’s biggest issue as a talent in AEW was that anyone who was in a program with him was essentially playing Russian roulette with their ability to get over. Some came out more elevated due to their work with Cody like Darby, Sammy, and even Brodie to some extent. But then you had guys like Archer, Black, or Andrade who had a lot of potential but most of it is still unrealized because working with Cody kinda killed their momentum coming in. Cody’s man of the people shtick was also played out and a heel turn could have really revitalized him into being more interesting on tv. I still say the money was in Cody turning heel, going back on his word of not challenging for the AEW world title, and cheating to beat page for it. That way AEW would have an easy top heel why someone like MJF can still develop and it gives Cody more of a chance at actually working with more of the baby face talents and properly getting them over.

I think it sounds like ego and pride. Cody wanted more main event money similar to Punk and Jericho because he believes he is at that level. He probably believes he is a bigger star now then when AEW first started. Tony Khan might disagree and thus that’s one reason why Cody might have wanted to leave.
The second is pride. Cody apparently saw AEW as another opportunity as a way to pay respect to his dad by taking on one of his most famous roles that being a booker. When Tony Khan “took the ball” in 2020 and in October 2021 calling himself the head booker and giving Cody less power it might have annoyed him because he wants to pay respect to his dad.
He has gone to WWE because it’s not a step backwards. If he went from AEW to Impact then that would be a step backwards in terms of main stream notoriety. Plus, he knows this is a massive deal. Mr AEW signs with WWE. The first time this has ever happened. He might be hoping Vince knows how big of a deal this is as well.
As for the whole creative control thing. Maybe he gets a similar level of control to what Daniel Bryan had in WWE and what Roman Reigns has right now. I can’t see that though. He doesn’t seem to be on that kind of level.
That Kenny Omega interview seemed interesting. The quotes made it seem quite brutal but when you actually listen to him he was very respectful. I believe Kenny and Cody might have had a disagreement and Cody doesn’t want to be apart of AEW because it conflicts with his initial vision, a vision he believes should happen since he helped build AEW. The Elite and Cody split because of conflicting visions and notice how they stopped being in tv with each other around the time Tony Khan took over. When the pandemic era came around they had the March 13th and March 25th shows together and that’s it. I wonder why the start of the pandemic era, a time you’d think they’d want to be together even more seemed to be the beginning of the end.
I think he signs with WWE and is a member of the Raw roster and either feuds with Rollins, Orton or Edge for WrestleMaina as those would be classed as major matches in my opinion which links to the rumours. If Vince wants to push him then have him on Raw, he has more chance of success there. Then again if Reigns is holding both titles then can Cody ever reach the World Title? Maybe not.

Cody going away every three month to jump from one pointless feud to another is what turned the fans. It all started with his program with Archer. He never got any payoff to Jake doing alot of promos on him and Cody just winning one match. Then he had the TNT open which led to no real storylines from May to late August.
Then Brody crushed him, Cody left and they had like a two week story to cap off what should have gone for a couple months. He had the Taz thing which he never responded. He had a two week thing with Orange. Lost to Darby. Then he feuded with QT Marshall during another stretch of not being there.. He then went with Ogogo. Then Black "retired him". He came back to win one match. He had a short program with Penta, Andrade and then flip flopped with Sammy.

I like Cody a lot and I think he gets a lot of unfair criticism thrown his way, but Cody is a star who wants to be a superstar, and that’s just not going to happen when AEW has all this other talent on their roster. Again, I’m a huge fan of Cody, but is anyone really going to advocate pushing him over Bryan, Punk, Mox, Omega, or Hangman???
I’m sure it’s very frustrating to be in that position where you know you have a lot of value, but not quite enough to get to where you want to be. I think that’s the best way to summarize Cody’s position. He wants so badly to be one of those tippy top guys, but it’s just not going to happen when the competition is as stiff as it is, and that must be very frustrating for him because he is genuinely a damn good performer.
Even when I disagree with somebody, I think it’s important to try to understand their perspective and try to understand how they analyze a situation. So while I don’t agree with Cody, I can also understand why he probably feels on some level that Tony Khan and AEW have betrayed him. More than anybody else, Cody really was that rallying individual that was the face of the movement that would eventually become AEW. In the months and years leading up to the inception of AEW, Cody was the guy at the forefront of fighting for this promotion to become a reality.
So when Cody, the guy who at one point was synonymous with the very inception of AEW, saw himself slowly but surely losing notoriety in the company, it must have felt like a painful betrayal to him.
Again, not saying I agree with him, but I think that sense of betrayal is why Cody has no problem leaving.

It’s pretty easy to see. Cody’s vision was better than Kahn’s. Kahn’s pettiness showed in power plays. Cody walked. Why can I make these statements? Because Cody’s work elevated talent whereas Kahn’s booking does not elevate them it takes away from talent.
    Examples:
    - Shawn Spears. The Fued Cody had with Spears made me want to see more of Spears. The vignettes Spears had in that build up with JR and Tully were better than 90% of what WWE’s top guys get. Seth Rollins hasn’t had vignettes or interviews that made him look as good as these did for Spears. Immediately after the feud Kahn doesn’t book Spears in anything notable. It was months before we saw Spears again standing backstage. Only through working hard to research did I find that Spears next fued was on a CZcams video called AEW dark.. indefensible.
    - Darby Allin. It was the match and vignettes Cody had with Darby at Fyter fest that made you look at Darby differently. Even in a draw Darby looked amazing coming out of this match. It felt like Jeff hardy vs Taker 2002. Undisputed title ladder match. Since then Darby’s not been presented as the same interesting loner, underdog, interesting character who would get his ass beat but you could root for him against all odds. Tony had presented him like he’s a top prospect that garners the respect of everyone including living legends like Sting...
    - the best match in AEW history is still Cody vs Dustin. From the story telling in and out of the ring. Based on what we’ve seen since Kahn isn’t interested in presenting more of that wrestling. In the early days of AEW Cody’s segments were the best arguably. Cody has his vision. Kahn’s pride wouldn’t let the better man win. Kahn been a bigger Nepotistic visionary than Cody IMO. AEW’s product is not good rn. Kahn goes weeks or months without using talent. Kahn refuses to choose who his top stars are at the expense of the rest of the roster. He has the Gaul to hold his head high when talentless hacks like Evil Uno and Stu Greyson have had more matches than guys like Shawn Spears Scorpio Sky. Etc. It’s indefensible. I’m glad Cody left. Next the talent will get disgruntled at AEW. MaRk those words.

It’s wild to look back on things at this point in time and seeing how everything turned out. I had similar thoughts as many did at the time in terms of how surprising it was to see him leave and wondering what events would result in leaving what seemed to be a ifetime position for a company you helped to start that likely paid well even when he wasn’t actively wrestling, carried some extent of influence, provided benefits by being an actual employee and being able to be around his family. And I remember being surprise to take the risk to give up so much to gamble that you’d be used at that top level and accomplish the goals you always had and how easily he could’ve made a move and immediately slid down. I never imagined it was ever a money problem and figured that he may have been unhappy being the guy who still favored the old style while all the other had the independent focus and that it may have been frustrating. And that seems like the primary issue and that Tony didn’t exercise his option because he knew Cody didn’t want to be there long term any longer and just let him go over keeping somebody high level around to be miserable. And that made sense for me and the hypocrite thing never charted much for me because it wasnt all that crazy in my mind that the way he spoke of the two and being confrontational the way he was changed.
When AEW and its goals weren’t what he thought it would be and the loss of his influence changed the way he felt. If TK controls everything and you don’t have the influence you thought you’d have what value does being an EVP in name only have? And then it made a bit of sense why he left when he debuted at WM and he was left the way he was which led to some optimism.
But it’s incredible how it turned out. Ever since he left AEW there’s been endless squabbles and fighting and negativity. And then you see how Cody nas been used at the top level, won the RR back to back, main event of WM back to back both being the all time gate record for the event, gained and maintained such immense fan support that it led to the rock being rejected and the company changing the course because his support was that strong, and was the one to finally end Roman’s title run and now happens to be the face of the company. All occurring over a period of time that WWE has been smashing records. May have been a wild risk but the man did it work out.

Personally, I am happy to see Cody out of AEW. I wish him well as he pursues another path, but making Cody out to be more than he is or paying him more than what he was worth would have been a huge mistake for AEW, and congrats to Tony K for being smart enough to keep AEW on the right path - which I personally believe will be easier going forward without Cody.

Cody's ego did him in. He was great in 2019 but went slowly downhill after the feud with MJF. Then it became a cascade in 2021. Everything he (and Brandi) was involved with became a train wreck. Then you had Punk and Danielson come in at the same time that some of their younger stars in Hangman, MJF, and Darby became legitimate main event players.
If Cody had turned heel and gotten involved in a hot angle that drew viewers, he would have had more leverage to at least get something closer to what he wanted. Instead, he stubbornly stayed in this act that wasn't working, so of course given all these circumstances, it was easier to let him go.
His likely fate is to have a hot few months to a year in WWE and then drop right back down into random misery again. Maybe it's worth it if he's getting paid more. He has a kid now and supposedly has some debts because he's a spendthrift, thinking he'll earn enough to pay it all back later. Not good if true.

If you listen toh Brandi's last aew theme. It is clear how much cady and brandi are obsessed with hhh and Stephanie. And kenny omega also kind of said the same thing in his latest interview, and bigger names like punk, danielson is coming to aew even mark henry and big show are bigger more popular than cody didn't sit well with cody. That's the different mentality cody has from bucks and kenny. From beginning of dynamite cody was feuding with jericho and in grand slam the headline was omega vs danielson. I don't think that will sit well with cody. He also needs wrestlemania kind of exposure and wwe's money for his poltical career. From ogogo feud wrestler cody died, from that point his promos are more like practice for his political career than wrestler. That's why he won't turning heel because of those promos. How many people know the name of hangman's child or mox's child or any other wrestler's who has a child recently but cody and brandi even promoting their child as a political move like look look our child is half black and half white, and what kind of name is liberty🤣 and Cody's move more like a wwe guy going to impact or tna to prove themselves and then coming back to wwe.

Is there any chance that this ends up much differently than -Cody gets a big Wrestlemania match & a big pop, followed by maybe a main event angle with Roman where he gets squashed for the title at Summerslam, followed by maybe a long IC title reign, followed by maybe an eventual Brandi appearance & feud with Miz & Maryse with a mixed tag next year at WM, eventually ending up a mid carder like Sami & Owens & maybe even a no carder like Finn Balor? Then no tv for 3 months then pops back up as Stardust?

I think the focus should be on the fact that Cody's options is much broader than wrestling. He was an aspiring actor before signing to WWE, when in the WWE he was on the show Arrow, after leaving WWE Brandi was a co host to a talk show while Cody worked the independent scene. If not WWE option, he can just go full time in Hollywood like he always wanted with the TBS show and the reality show both Brandi and Cody had/have and their CZcams show. Their SAG card is definitely in affect to put forth their focus to Hollywood at this point. Cody is not just inspired by Triple H but also patterns the Rock as well. Also, he hinted at retirement after his time with AEW comes to an end, I believe he mentioned this in late 2020 to early 2021. So for Cody to put less focus to AEW during his tenure and more on The Big Top show and the reality show was the writing on the wall as to where his focus really was. So it will be no surprise that he goes Hollywood going forward especially when WWE contracts don't mean squat anyways.

  • @Gum_Cuzzler

I think of the EVPs Cody was always the most likely to go back. The Bucks would be at best mid carders in the Fed. I doubt they could even get Vince to match whatever tony is paying them. And Kenny strikes me as someone who would be genuinely content never setting foot in the WWE. Cody obviously always wanted to be the top guy in what he considers the top company.

  • @RobertoTheOriginalManFromTheA

Probably because Cody was so not over in this recent period I tend to think Tony chose not to roll his contract over because he was offering him less money than before, not the same or more, especially when you account for huge names like CM Punk and Danielson that cost a pretty penny. Kenny and the Bucks were recent champions, but Cody's tenure as TNT Champ was seen as self-serving and aggrandizing and the crowds were booing him. If he had gone heel he would have gotten over!
