Goldfinch commentary at 26.08
lmao i apparently had an imaginary friend when i was little and my parents love telling the story of how i got into a huge argument with them and practically dumped them. that’s right, i BROKE UP with my imaginary friend.
i still don’t think i’ll ever be cooler than my four year old self tbh.
biblioleah daaaamn you are cold!!!
I really appreciate how in depth you are about why you dislike books! And you give awesome examples! You’ve saved me from reading a lot of really crummy books! Thank you so much! Also, totally agree about miscommunication in books!! ESPECIALLY romance!
I never heard anyone discuss the goldfinch the way you just did, thank you so much for that!! I HATE when ppl say “slurs are used for historical accuracy” no, no, no. It’s a terrible excuse and daaaamn I didn’t know it won in 2017!!!! //:
Oooohhh what you just said about Serpent and Dove, I felt that. It’s so hard for me to talk about issues in the community bc I know white people are wayyy harsh on POC when we talk about race and it’s disgusting and discouraging. I’m sorry you were dragged into the discussion with white people being unable to acknowledge racism, but I thank you and applaud you for always standing up for yourself.
I really appreciate and needed this. Ty Paola
THEY’RE 1000% GIANT UNKNOWN SEA CREATURES IN THE OCEAN THAT WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THIS
finally someone believes me
Priory of the Orange Tree was one of my favorite reads of 2019 but yeah everything you said is correct
Re: Imaginary Friend gotta love that bible fanfic
I don't even know why this made me laugh so hard!!! "Priory of the Orange Tree was one of my favorite reads of 2019 but yeah everything you said is correct" Did not see that end coming. LOL!
@@HelloKittyfouronesix me too! sksksk love me some honesty
@@LinnaAP #TheTruth! LOL
Bible fanfic omgggggggg and I’m glad u liked priory! It had great moments
You are such a delight to watch! I'm glad to see that not everyone is die hard fan of Serpent and Dove. I borrowed it from the library and have had it sitting on my shelf for like 3 months (I haven't been able to return it because the libraries are closed) and I read 50 pages and just have not cared to pick it up again because nothing about that first 50 pages was good or made me want to read more. So glad to see it's not just me!

I loved watching this video! I hope this year the books you read are way better!
I've only heard good things about the goldfinch except from you and I think that's very telling.
Idk if it's just what i read but i feel like I don't notice much outside of slurs in books so either I'm reading the right ones or just I am that biased. definitely gonna work on this.
I think honestly if I look at most of what i read now has lacking is just wide rep in general.
“This tea is not doing its job, I’m still wound up!” LOL
I haven't read most of these books but HARD AGREE on the ones I've read. Priory of the Orange Tree was a DNF for me and I agree with all your criticisms. And To Kill A Kingdom.... SPOILERS
Everything you said was true BUT ALSO I'm sooooooo tired of a book's description telling me that I'm getting a dark mermaid story with evil characters and then all it is is a dark beginning that's thrown out the window the second a character falls in love. UG! Just give me the evil characters I neeeeeed!
Also, I'm so sorry The Goldfinch and Serpent and Dove hurt you. Thank you for being so bold and honest with your reviews. You're amazing
Highly agree with you on the miscommunication trope. It is such a lazy way of conflict and since the characters can easily just say but choose not to makes it frustrating. I rather prefer situations like this when the characters have no control over it, when the plot moves forward because of a characters stupidity it makes it more aggravating
Right before you poured more I was thinkin “nah bby. You need some more” 😭😂
The Bookish Penbabe 😂 u know me well
I haven't been around for a while, but now I'm back and getting my fix of "Bowties&Books" and let me tell you I've really missed your content! Just wanted to share this before I click on the next vide oand forget to comment that you're an awesome creatore and not only my/ our consciousness! Your insights in books are amazing to hear, but you're so funny, and bring such a postive energy into my day, and always give me new content I wasn't aware of needing until I hit play.. thank you ♥
I adore you and your content and f*** all the people who are being sh***y to you because of your oppinions or anything else really! Thank you for bringing stuff to my attention for hyped books, because the hype is not healthy, more like poisonous if you ask me! Also, you have heard my wais of whyyyyyy, and made a TBR game with a deck of cards, thank you!! I was starting to wonder why noone has done it until now, and if people don't play cards for fun over the ocean as we do here. :)
Just found your channel today, 3 or 4 videos in and I'm loving you! Awesome Video
ahhhh thank you! this means so very much to me!
I appreciate how you explain your dislikes but you don't take away from the good things each book did or the author's writing with detailed examples for each. I really enjoy your videos!
ty Antoinette!
I absolutely love your green look 🧚♂️ I havent read most of the books you mentioned but I know what to be wary of
omfg thank you Carlotta! i was worried about it bc i never wear much bright colors!

Starting the reading year on a bad note always sucks so much 😩 and you are hilarious and also so eloquent in your thoughts! Absolutely loved this video and your fantastic editing!
WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS COMMENT! so kind of you. and agh i totally agree. but i LOVED the first book i read this year!
I loved the first I read too! It’s always nice to start off the reading year right!
I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I did either, but I did have fun buddy reading the wedding date with you! My first buddy read of the year!
Thor Wants Another Letter memories omggggg
Guessing for your Worst Favorite Books... Serpent & Dove and The Goldfinch??? Also "TELL ME WHYYYYYY" I DIED
okay wowwww you know me so well and also lmao im glad you liked it
Loved this video! You’re entitled to your opinions just like everyone else. Everyone isn’t going to like the same things when it comes to books or take away the same stuff from them. It’s like have two people cook the exact same dish. The won’t exactly taste the same based off who’s cooking. I respect and love your views and if/when I read one of these books I can keep in mind what you’ve talked about. Keep being great.
yes yes! but i gotta say, my food is fire LMAOOO :ppp jk jk
I bet it is. From what I’ve seen you can hold your own in the kitchen
You know what...I’m gonnA make some tea right now! 😁☕️ I'm terrible with communication but in a story I'd rather have the conflict!
I toootally agree with you about Priory of the Orange Tree!
Thank you for actually explaining why you didn't like the miscommunication in The Wedding Date. I feel like people keep saying they didn't like a book because it had miscommunication but don't say anything else. For me, miscommunication can be done in a way I really like and connect to in certain books, but I don't like when miscommunication is used for no reason or is not consistent with the characters' personalities and the context of the situation. Just saying a book was bad because of miscommunication is not helpful. You always do a good job of explaining why you liked or didn't like certain aspects of a book instead of just listing reasons.
Also, that testosterone line in To Kill a Kingdom irritated me more than it probably should have when I read it. I actually didn't finish it because I got so bored.
Elizabeth Rater Omgg ty for telling me Bc so far I have not heard other ppl be irritated by that line when I rolled my eyes so hard at it!!!
I definitely felt the same with priory of the orange tree . One of my favorite books is on here but that’s okay 😂
Capri'sBookIsland 😂
I LOVE your mug so much!
Such a pity that you didn't enjoy Priory, it's actually on my 2020 tbr 😂I'm also not the biggest fan of convenience writing, but I hope I'm going to love it either way!
Basically Britt omg theres lots to love about it tbh!!
Love hearing your thoughts on these! Like stardusted reads said - Priory was one of my favorite reads, but you're totally right. Same with To Kill a Kingdom for me. Not so secretly, I didn't even like Chbosky's Perks of Being a Wallflower, so not surprised his new book is bleh.
Also, didn't bother to read The Goldfinch, but your rant on this is so spot on and so important and should be required listening for all writers and publishers and editors.
omg now im scared to read Perks lmao
@@JesseOnCZcams to me, Perks reads like Nice Guy (TM) wish fulfillment. But I think that's very much based in my own baggage and experiences as well. Your mileage may vary. :)
The Nightcrawler had me absolutely screaming 😂
Average Joe Reads 😂 Im just saying!
That s'mores tea from David's Tea is a must for me all year.
ITS SO GOOD
Now I'm nervous to read The priory of the orange tree. I have to lower my expectations...
I enjoyed To kill a kingdom but I agree with that the villain isn't well written 😅
This is why I now embrace DNF'ing.
The Goldfinch was one of the last books I forced myself to complete. A friend of mine and I decided to do a buddy read and picked one that was becoming a movie (neither of us have seen the movie) and we were both so bored the entire time and just kept asking ourselves, when is anything going to happen?
Thank you for sharing ya'lls insights on the problematic/racist parts of this book and how it harms POC. I am working on being a more mindful and aware reader.
when is anything going to happen😂😂😂😂 loved that and also facts
i hated to kill a kingdom too lol (i couldn’t even finish it ugh) i’m glad i’m not the only one.
I’ve only read one of these books, but I loved this whole video.
After this video, I’m curious to see what you think about Dig by AS King.
omg thats on my list!
Wow I love your Frida mug❤️❤️
i am obsessed with it!!
Glad I didn't waste time with the goldfinch...thank you!
The Tiger at Midnight cover is pretty and all, but the placement of the flare thingy makes it look like the heroine's farts are on fire.
I just found your channel and loveeeeee it and love your videos!
AHHH TY TY IM SO GLAD YOU LIKE!
Absolutely pulling The Goldfinch off my TBR after this.
damn katy perry wrote imaginary friend apparently
Will never pick up the goldfinch now. Trash. Thank you for the heads up
Yes to the fem hate in YA and even in adult fantasy! So frustrating!! One of my biggest pet peeves. And now I will always imagine Nightcrawler popping into rando stories with a butler hat whenever insta travel happens XD
I love how you can find some good to say about (almost) all the books even if they were not for you. And again, thank you for your passion and your honesty- This really helps me because I have avoided almost all these because of the hype.
Bookish Linguist 😂😂😂😂 Im sorry Lmao
I try to give balanced reviews when possible!!! ....I try 😂
Oh my goodness! I also have a HUGE fear of deep water. For me, if I can't see the bottom, I'm not doing it. Even those deep diving pools give me heart palpitations lol For the EXACT same reason as you. I'm not getting eaten by any kind of megalodon or eldritch mercreature. We haven't begun to truly explore the ocean, you have no idea where anything is at any given time - I won't even go on a cruise lol I know I'm rambling but it's just so rare to find someone who has this fear
I do too!! Like nope it is way to big with who knows what the fuck is under there, and not to mention water is sooo strong and that terrifies me. What's interesting is I'm terrified of big bodies of water but more than ready to go into space, a massive paradox I know haha
omfg y'all id rather go to space than the ocean. F that. have y'all seen the movie The Sphere?? so scary. nope. also when @nikipezzano brought up megalodon i died haha
@@JesseOnCZcams I haven't!! If there's aliens involved I'm all for it 👽
I knew the moment that I clicked on this video that Serpent and dove was going to top this list. I want to send you some more tea to cleanse yourself of these bad books.
Mellissa, you know me so well lmao!!!! thank you for the positive energy. lord knows i needed it lmao
Hi Jesse, where did you get that amazing mug from?!?! :) Love your channel!
Jess Gafkowitz thank you Jess! It’s from Pantina
I saw Imaginary Friend in the bookstore shortly after Christmas and almost got it. For some reason, something told me not to. The wiki page for this book mentioned that critics were reminded of Stephen King novels. Reading what the book is about, I can't help but think of Children of the Corn. Not exactly the same, but I see similarities in religion being brought up. Also, I love that you give explanations on why you didn't like the books. I feel like that definitely makes it easier for other people to decide whether they want to read the books or not.
late responding, but thank you for this comment, Heather!
Sounds like you have thalassophobia. I have it too, which is unfortunate because I grew up on the beach and absolutely loooove going in the ocean. At least, I did as a child - now I'm too scared to swim in it. The furthest I can go out is my waist (being 4'10", that's not very far)... on a good day.
Holy shit, thank you for this video. I had no interest in reading the Goldfinch but I am extremely grateful that you took the time to talk about it because I had never heard any of the racism mentioned anywhere I've seen this book talked about and I am glad to be more informed. I cannot believe that *that* is the kind of literature the book community is still considering award worthy.
(also your talking about replacing your metaphorical kids' imaginary friend with a puppy gave me a good laugh!)
you think im playing lmaoooo
New subscriber here! Love your videos but I have a pressing question! That kettle!? What brand is it? Because I've never seen anything like it! Thank you! =)

guess I'm gonna have to actually properly dnf the goldfinch holy shit
I'm glad you feel the same way as I do about the water, like I'm not the only one. There are things down there...it's like the one horror story item that gets me every time. We don't know what's down there...Also, good on you for putting your health first. I enjoyed the book but doesn't take away the fact that it was harmful. I can't read that Me Before You book because I can't get past how they refer to the handicapped character since I grew up with a father who was in a chair since the age of 3. Never gonna argue with people about it, it was just a harmful book to me. Not giving it another chance.
OMG have you heard of the thriller book the Deep? Its coming out later this year. Its set on the water! also YES your comment about not arguing w ppl. i don't have the time. nope.
@@JesseOnCZcams I have not heard of The Deep. Going to have to keep an eye out for that one. And, I have neither the time nor the patience to argue over things.
I've been unsure about reading Donna Tart (everyone just goes on and on about her; while I kinda see why, a- I don't enjoy reading about whiny white people and b-incest is a big "no no" for me- I barely survived fanfiction.net- and I heard about the twist in the Secret History.) and now I never will. You're a true hero, Jesse!
I'm in love with your articulation of your thoughts. I'm very late to this video and do apologize. I also enjoy how you love diversity and consent because I sure fucking agree completely. Consent is one of my big rules for relationships in novels. A character can give another character an unconsenting kiss if they are called out for it as wrong because even if the character wanted a kiss doesn't mean they were given consent to give the kiss.
Honestly as a biracial person, I love Donna tartt first two books but hate the goldfinch for reasons u stated and some others. It’s the only Donna tartt book I finished and give 2 stars.
I was one of those people who put Imaginary Friend on my TBR because of the author (POAW is one of my YA faves). I hate obvious "male writer" female characters especially when it comes to abuse survivors so thanks for saving my time lol!
I knew Serpent & Dove was gonna be #1 but had no idea about The Goldfinch. I haven't seen any reviews but that's simply because I was never interested in it lol.
haha youre wise not to be interested in it. even outside of my issues with how poc were portrayed, the plot was nonexistent and the writing was VERY meandering. its just not a great book!
someone directed me to your video after watching my goldfinch review to offer another booktuber with a similar opinion! THANK GOD!!! i also did not enjoy this book. i briefly talked about racism in my review, but definitely not through the lens you did. it was absolutely wonderful to listen to and thank you so much for doing the labor of pointing out donna tartt's problematic writing when you shouldn't have had to. subscribed immediately 🥰🥰
🤎✊🏽🤎🥺
the face journey you took me on with the goldfinch's description:
> laughs while the alcohol bit is goin
> smile quickly fades with the introduction of white people saying the n-word.
> face turns into abject horror as jesse continues describing the book.
I truly enjoy you personality loved this video
thank you Krystal
lmao when you grabbed the tequila i thought you might grab the eggos 😅
biblioleah omfggggg mukbang
The Everlasting Rose was greatly disappointing to me as well, I couldn't even finish it :/
LucieReads such a sad let down
The Priory of the Orange Tree is that bad 🥺😭 but I have that on my TBR, it's signed and everything (presigned, I bought it and saw the sticker afterwards and there's a scribble on the first page that probably is supposed to resemble the authors name, but it could also be word soup with how readable it is....)
Omg you’ll probably love it!!! Most people did! Don’t let me turn you off to it 🤎😭
@@JesseOnCZcams hopefully, but it's also so thick and I'm like half looking for reasons not to start that commitment🥺😂😂
Oh. My god, yes! Regarding Imaginary Friends, that TURN, I was TIRED. like, I'm sorry, I even saw that plot twist coming, but @Chbosly, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT????
it was just too long and I felt very unsatisfied when I finished it, even though I loved the character dynamics, especially Kate and Christopher mother and son relationship and how she cared for him - the rest of the book was just disappointing. I'm putting off writing a review of it cause I don't have the energy to rant about it right now 😂

wait it wasnt set in the 50s? I have only seen the supporting materials and reviews but ... when it it even set then?
aptasi/competencefantasy 2008! I mentioned this a couple times :P
@@JesseOnCZcamsWow. my brain is even still trying to toss that info out as making no sense. doesn't sound like a very nice book in any case
aptasi/competencefantasy yeah that’s part of the problem. The writing is so racist the book reads like it’s from old times
I’ve only read Serpent & Dove 💀
I adore you. Keep putting yourself first. I appreciate you all the more for it. I haven't read any of the books on this list and I never will. The Goldfinch in particular sounds like trashfire.
i adore you too!
💜💜💜💜💜💜 Your Videos !!!
I gave priory of the orange tree 2.5. I was so bored with it 🙄
it truly wasn't that exciting. youre so right
40:00-40:17 Yes!! Authors should not write characters that they know they can't write well just for the sake of inclusion!
when i saw goldfinch at number 2 i was like " what book is so awful that it didn't top this shit?" But when you showed what number 1 was i was like ohhhhh forgot about that.. GAHAH..... I loved the short skits, it made me laugh out loud.
lmao!! thank you. i honestly had way too much fun with this video
It is so cathartic to see Imaginary Friends on someone else's worst book list. I literally can't think about that book without getting angry that I spent time reading it that could have been spent reading like two or three great books. Every female character was just built up around being abused by the men around them(even the freaking children). Also, the turn in tone and content was just something else. It felt like I was being hit over the head with a bible and like I avoid that feeling at all cost when it comes to media I consume. I don't need Kirk Cameron up in my horror stories.
OKAY YES ALL OF THIS. the child sexual abuse was just so....it was too much
i love the priory of the orange tree but she could’ve been like 300 pages shorter if samantha shannon would just shut up 😂
strange the reader Lmaoooo

10000000% agree with your thoughts on the goldfinch! It is a shitty book.
Also shittily written & needed to be cut down.
I have no idea how she won the pulitzer wtf.
THE WRITING WAS MEANDERING AND THERE WAS NO PLOT HOW DID IT WIN A PULITZER

Woooowww. The Goldfinch was on my TBR for February but... I think it's just going to be in my unhaul pile. No thank you. That or I'll rage read it so I can rate it low on GR's lol.
hahahah! honestly read it and look at how poc are portrayed. its disgusting. i have no respect for ppl who defend it
A reviewer I follow pointed out her issues with the language in To Kill a Kingdom. It's just Greek with improper grammar. Her review really opened my eyes to how lazy the world building in this book is.

If you are looking for a GOOD fantasy book that also super normalizes queerness, you NEED to check out Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James. I will scream to the heavens how much I love this book until the day I die. If you do check it out though, be prepared for a very unconventional method of storytelling. It took me about 150 pages to really get hooked but once I did, I devoured the rest of it in a couple of sittings. Definitely my favorite read of 2019. :) love your channel btw, keep doing what you do and you'll blow up in no time 💜❤🌈
Edit: THERE'S SERPENT IMAGERY ON THE COVER TOO ITS CHECKING ALL OF YOUR BOXES
Double Edit: thank you for sharing your gripes with The Goldfinch, I read that book when it first came out and loved it. At that point I never picked up on those issues but the past year or so Ive been reading more and more books written by people of color and the difference is immense. I am definitely trying to approach books by white authors with a more critical eye and I really appreciate your reminder of that.
OMFG JOE! i won this in a giveaway last year and i haven't read it yet but i really want to try and read it for blackthon this year!!! and im so proud of you for working to see how POC are portrayed in books. well done
@@JesseOnCZcams I'm very excited to hear your thoughts when you get around to it!
Uh...I was gonna read “the goldfinch”, I don’t think I’ll be reading it now as a black person...😒.
Jazzy115 same
Self care. Also there is 0 plot. Very meandering; It’s just not a great book overall
The Wedding Date was also a flop for me and I've also decided a long while ago that i'm not touching any of Donna Tart's books with a ten foot poll. There are many authors of color more deserving of my money than she is.
Oh and Jesse, its true that some WP can’t handle racial statements/criticism... Don’t blame me for your white guilt😱😂
I miss Ravenclaw 🥺🥺
Word Wonders i miss her too ♥️
The Goldfinch looked just way too long for what it was... Didn't think I would like it.
Edit: omg.. As a person of color I don't want to read this even more
LMAO!
I love sexy times in books and my absolute favorites involve communication. Asking if your partner will do something to you & vice versa is sssoooooooo hot! Miscommunication is damn annoying for sure.
We are some angry bitches but that’s bc society likes to tell us how we can & cant act, poc especially.
Kurt can teleport anywhere he wants *hinthint, winkwink
oh my god brandy u are so kinky lmaooooo
initially i was going to come down here and say that at least the goldfinch had black people because the secret history was just full of white characters and then i remembered the extended sequence featuring some character not at all relevant to the plot of the book going on a racist rant against middle eastern people and we got to catch a glimpse at a middle eastern character trying to talk and being shouted down
LMAO! like i said at the end of this video, im at the point where i don't even CARE if white authors write all-white books anymore. i would PREFER the book be all white than be given a racist portrayal of an entire race! and ugh i don't know how ppl can stan her writing.
You over here critiquing the books and I'm over here like:
That's cool and all but uhhhh,
*can u like hand it over 👀*
Wow....no one mentioned to me goldfinch was that racist glad I didn’t pick it up
i'm so glad too! there are way better works of literature to enjoy
Bowties & Books thank you!! Lately I’ve been getting book recommendations without any trigger warnings and have had bad repercussions from them I’m glad there’s booktubers like you willing to make such warnings
That creepy racist one kinda sounds like...intentionally racist.
