Hi, just a little tip, if u want to get more of stock gy6, get a performance cdi, there is a lot of cheap ones that work, i had mine upgraded and it increased my top speed. Basically the performance cdi can make your gy6 rev higher. Approximately 10% higher than normal
Hey guys! Greetings from Finland! I just found your channel when I was looking for 50cc scooter tuning videos. I have a couple of old Chinese scooter scraps and my goal is to build one ridable 🛵. The fun and laughter is well reflected in your videos. Keep the playful attitude and professional mechanics! 😁👍
Here is another finnish person, i have aprilia sr50 future 2015, 50cc. 2 strk. Any tutorials would be appreciated if someone finds actual good ones. I'm looking for upgrades that i can do in my garage without buying much extra parts (f.e, variator). I have found ONLY ONE good electric restriction guide, but i dont think it works, havent tried it yet. Have a good day.
I use rollers rather than sliders. if you run heavier rollers to get more top speed, you can put stiffer clutch springs so you can build some more revs before the clutch grabs. that will give better take-off. Light rollers work well, but may not have enough mass to hit top speed. an NCY secondary slider pulley may help too, I installed one, works great.
Definitely noticed the top speed wasn't there. We haven't messed with the clutch springs so that's something we will have to do next. We have some tuning/learning to do yet
Performance CDIs are good for short burst drives, like drag racing. They are not advisable for long trips where you tend to do full-throttle for longer period of times, because Performance CDIs have no limiter, you can burn it out driving at high rpm for long period of times
I would be interested to see some discussion on an improved final drive ratio gearset. Stock 49 CD is not so great in an area that has many hills. It really kinda sucks in stock configuration!
my 50 will easily do 70mph with the stock 49cc top end. A good carb, exhaust and the lightest rollers you can find and a taller gear set for he final drive is all you need. My 2014 Tao Tao 50 starts to Death wobble rite at between 76-78mph going down hill. It will go faster but I don't have the nuts to try it. I forget where i got my gear set but it was off of ebay. It increased the top end by atleast 12mph but it did slow down acceleration a bit especially on hills. They were listed as a Highway final drive gear set for a 139QMB. Shipped directly from China.
I appreciate all it Europe point of views in your knowledge you still got a lot to learn Steve from Annapolis Maryland keep up the good work I've been doing it for quite a few years and I just was curious and watching your show
I have a 100cc big bore kit race cam bigger valves performance clutch 6.5g rollers performance exhaust aftermarket carb forget jet sz racing cdi coil aftermarket cooling cover and I’m getting 55mph on flat ground close to 60 down hills and can do 30 -35 up hill depending how steep it is only other thing to do now is upgrade to a 150 and build it till then I’m happy with it
Good engine to mess with and learn how to improving performance. Been doing just that for over 10 years now and have taken a lot of what I've learned and stepped up to modifying a 150 engine. 7gm variator weights are generally what comes installed on gy6 50cc engines.
@@ragadallas1982 how many grams are your variator weights? Going lighter will increase acceleration but lose top end and vise versa. You need to experiment with variator weights that will give you the performance you personally seek.
17x49 gear set. The lighter 4 gram sliding weights will help keep the rpm’s up high. The longer gearing does not affect acceleration. You will have a longer range of speed for the variable transmission to work through. This will help combat the loss of top speed from using a lighter weight slider.
If i remember its 1+. So 6g sliders are equal to 5g weights. Honestly, a cam, head porting, 19mm slide carb would be super interesting just for shits and giggles 😂
The matter is 50cc or 150cc find out what the factory gram roller weight is and put three of them in there and three of the real light ones in there do a combination mix and you will get some RPM and still have top speed
I also have a 50cc gy6 and i had 7 gram rollers in it and deleted the vario ring. Stock cdi only cvt Mods. It ran around 70kmh which i think is around 40-50 mph. 4 gram rollers are way to light so try using 6.5-7 gram
Also you can use a flat file or a sander and make the area the belt clutch surface meets more of a flat taper and polished , secound you can widen the area the rollers compress at the max to allow the primary to grab closer together at full throttle
I got a 50cc scooter I'm putting the high performance cylinder head with oversized valves go with a a9 cam you already got the ignition system Steve from Annapolis Maryland

Roller weights dont change top speed. They only adjust the revs the bike runs at. The idea is to have a good variator and weights that run the bike at the revs where the bike produces the most power. Once the variator is maxed out its irrelevant what weights are in it. My guess is that the new belt you put in it isnt allowing the variator to max out because its slightly wider or shorter.

I live in a place with very steep hills and looking at your videos making a 50cc scooter be better and more usable really gave me the push I needed to do something about mine. When I was younger my uncle use to send me to get the piston(?) of his 50cc to a mechanic who turn it into 3-wheels standard cut and the scooters he had took off like freaking kawasakis. Of course, that was in the Dominican Republic so not sure whether something like that could be done where I live now
Looks like it has a gy6 so yeah it should work. Do you know how to re jet your stock carb? If you do I'd suggest doing that instead. This is basically the exact same carburetor with a 75 jet and a pod filter. But if you arent sure how to re jet it then this isn't a bad deal for 30 bucks!
No, in theory, they should be. The 50cc just doesn't have the power to make it worth it. Playing with the variator, roller weights, and clutch springs is the best bang for your buck.
I can only get my tao tao 50 to do 30mph, i put a new carb air filter i even changed weights in variator and added a new belt. How can i get this thing to go 40mph?
Yes I new were not going to like them iv been working on scooters for 33 years I had a old 78 scooter it would get 75 but you almost had to push it to take off
I just did one of these for my 50cc, and my stock airbox had a couple lines running into the engine hose. I left the stock hose because I wasn't sure if I could leave them loose. The new carb only had one hose. Seems like a lot of stuff is tied into the stock airbox when I get down and look. Is there a schematic somewhere? I don't want to stall out anywhere.
Ok, so I pulled the stock airbox and dropped in the cone air filter. runs pretty well so far. The hoses - there is apparently some emissions cylinder thing that has to go. There is a hose coming from the front of the engine block which is apparently a vacuum hose, that went to the stock airbox. Do you just leave that loose? Seems like I'm at risk of particles entering the system. The water drain line on the bottom of the airbox doesn't matter so that's gone. It pulls and surges when accelerating which is slightly annoying. Same top speed (37) until I can get the variator restrictor off (waiting on impact wrench, stripped two 8's with hand tools. Just wondering about that block vacuum hose.
I think the rest just hang from what I remember. You should be fine. I will double check next time in the shop to double check. If anything changes I'll let you know
@@throttle_therapy I put a lot of work in over the last few days! The vacuum hose seems to not really matter to the operation of the new carb once the air box and eco stuff goes away. It rests in the chassis naturally and it's pretty thick so I'll probably just leave it. If I start noticing hoses visible from the outside I'll either tie them up or pull it off completely. I never really did Small engine stuff but it's not that difficult once you tear into it. It's super interesting how replacing one piece shakes out problems with the other pieces. That's way too big even the stock intake valve is not that big.. Plus you never get that carburetor in tune
On a 50 cc scooter they should always be around 30 at least in Florida that is
