Piano Sonata No. 16 in C major ("Sonata semplice") K. 545. Vienna, June 26,1788
1. Allegro (0:00)
2. Andante (3:27)
3. Rondo. Allegretto (8:15)
Ingrid Haebler, piano
Description by Brian Robins [-]
Universally known as the "Sonata facile (or semplice)," the relative ease of K. 545 has ensured that it has become the most of famous of all Mozart's piano sonatas, a work that scarcely a student of the instrument fails to learn at some point in his or her career. The entry in Mozart's own thematic catalog, dated June 26, 1788, adds that the sonata was intended "for beginners." Yet despite its fame today, the circumstances of its composition are not known, the original manuscript is lost, and the sonata was not published in Mozart's lifetime, the first edition appearing in 1805 from the press of the composer and publisher Johann André of Offenbach.
There are three short movements: an Allegro, often quoted as a paradigm of the ambiguity of Classical "simplicity," a charming central Andante, and a tiny finale in Rondo form. It is remarkable to note that this unpretentious little work must have been composed at the same time as the great last trilogy of symphonies; indeed it was added by Mozart to his catalog of works on the same day as the first of those magnificent works, the great Symphony No. 39 in E flat, K. 543, one of his grandest conceptions. - Hudba

That's What annoying me
love this sonata, i’ve been playing it for a couple of months now and i can assure you there’s nothing “facile” about it 😊
Oh please. Of course it's almost impossible to master a piece, that's why Bach is so much played at exams for superior classes, however I invite you to play some Liszt or Ravel, and maybe you'll see what monstrous pieces are these compared to this.
You will also note that this piece is played by many children, in their first years of piano...
@@comicsfr8963 I won’t argue about the difficulty of Mozart and Bach as you obviously lack any musical knowledge and, might I add, manners.
@@comicsfr8963🤓
Why is the second movement so underrated? I get that it's not as exciting, fast paced and catchy as the first one, and maybe therefore less famous, but it's seriously one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I have heard.
I totally agree
literally its beautiful, I am in love

@@JINGYELyu-mp8pt You know what? Because of your comment I went and listened to it, and I have to give it to you: it's absolutely gorgeous. It's definitely comparable to this one.
it’s hard finding good recordings of Mozart sonatas since everyone plays it the same way, never thought that a slow tempo would unlock the true beauty of this piece
This is a very normal tempo for this piece.
SpaghettiToaster every time my friends play it they do twice this speed lol
This is not slow, most pianists just think fast is the only valid option when playing most literature because "eff musicality, fast is the only way". Those pianist wouldn't recognize subtlety if it hit them like a truck. This speed is perfect. Tell your friend to slow down, I don't care what their accolades are.
Aram, judging from the context I understand all too well what you mean by "a slow tempo". It's only slow in relation to the way some of your friends use to play it, or the tempo in some recordings you've found somewhere.
Slow tempo?
The best record i've listened by far. Elegant left hand, clear right hand, the rhythm combined so well that lift the piece to a higher level.
Same. I’d love to hear Horowitz play this but so far this outclasses all the big names whom I’ve heard it play.
I think it's played by software, if I'm not wrong...
People say Mozart is easy to play. It absolutely isn't. To play with the clarity and precision required of simple (relative to complex material) makes this very difficult. I'm not Mozart's biggest fan, but recordings like this one make me re-evaluate my feelings

“Sonata semplice” in italian semplice means “easy”. Mozart was such an asshole
Ingrid Haebler, to me, is among the top Mozart interpreters. Her rendition is always simple yet profound, pure yet exquisite. ❤😂🎉❤❤❤❤
Thank you, I wondered who is playing so beautifull and real classical, these atmosphere.. ♥
This a piece, that myself and my 4 other siblings learnt when we were children.
I am re-learning this aged 36, after about 20 years of zero practice,I'm not doing too bad... one of my FAVORITE pieces and takes me right back to childhood
How long did it take to learn it again? I haven't practiced in so long, and my fingers are totally slow and weak
I spend at least 2 hours practing the left hand for the minor section of the 2nd movement lol
As someone who's studied classical music for years and went to college for it (albeit for voice, not piano), whenever someone says "Mozart", this is the piece I think of.
I love this recording because the pianist isn't speeding like they have to take a massive piss. My biggest pet peeve is when pianists play everything like it's a race!! Musicality is thing that exist folks!
Exactly
When you’re not capable of playing something fast.......
Musicality and speed are not opposing things as your comment made it be lol.
@@danal81 yes not always, but in my personal opinion they often can be. Playing ability aside, as a listener I often feel that pianists rush through many pieces that, again just in my personal subjective opinion, don't sound like they were meant to be played through so quickly. Again, in my personal opinion (so as not to offend the speed gang).
Pope Fran pianists can rush through pieces for various reasons, sometimes emotions overtake them and it reflects on their tempo (Perahia’s performance of Chopin’s fantasie in f minor towards the end comes to my mind). Uchida sometimes “rushes” Mozart, I think it’s the way she feels phrasing with Mozart works the best. I wouldn’t say either of these pianists is not musical. Of course there are pianists who play fast for superficial effect. I get what you mean, and your comment is relevant under this video because one of Haebler’s greatest strengths is precisely this more laid down approach to Mozart’s music which lets it “breathe”.

And this little piece of nonsense has been repeated ad infinitum, ad nauseam all over CZcams by commentators who have never stopped to think for themselves that Mozart is no different really from most other older keyboard composers where every note matters - Scarlatti being a good example.
It’s less relevant in later composers like Chopin where if you omit a note or two because you can’t stretch, nobody notices, but with Mozart’s contemporary Haydn, there is no difference whatsoever between the two composers.
Mozart was quite clear about this Sonata facile* that it was a little sonata ‘for beginners’, and that’s what it is; it serves no purpose to attempt to big it up into something it is not.
* Italian singular, therefore pronounced correctly:
*’fah*-chee-leh’.
@@elaineblackhurst1509 What does this have to do with the discussion?
IL Suono Celestiale di Ingrid Haebler.Grandissima interprete Mozartiana insuperabile!Amo questa Grande pianista!
You shouldn't underestimate this sonata, it may be easier than other works of Mozart, but that doesn't make it a piece for beginners.
Some parts of the first movement are harder than you think. You need fast fingers for the scales and the the arpeggios are not so easy to play in the right speed. And then you have to play it with musical expression, left hand less loud etc. The difficulty is ranked intermediate (4-5 out of 9)
This piece is tricky, it sounds so easy but playing it nicely and perfectly is hard but what makes it easy is it doesn't have much leaps or many notes plus it's in C Major. I've been practicing the 1st movement and it took me at least 6 months to finish the piece. I'm currently in 2nd movement and 3rd.
Damn right, I think it's not easier than the alla turca.
Damn my fingers hurt now after practicing
It was meant to be a teaching piece for students. So his C effort would be an A for many others.
There's no point to playing pieces that don't push your limits :). On the bass, I've been trying to play Donna Lee on a fretless for years, and I still can't get it up to tempo.
I'd say that c major, is easier to read, cause no accidentals, but having one or 2 sharps when playing is much more ergonomic
This masterpiece is beyond description , immeasurable , unfathomable and full of admiration , acclaim and deep emotion
This masterpiece is the humanity's mental cradle that cradled by Mozart
Every note is on its right place, everyone hears it when you play this piece and make a even a slight mistake.
lol
Hyperbole is not helpful; K545 is arguably Mozart’s weakest piano sonata; it’s a sonata facile (easy sonata) intended for beginners - he wrote far better.

Now, I guess the only other mystery to be solved is - what is "semplice" about this, exactly. The left hand alberti is particularily unpleasantly difficult to play delicately. I get my nose out of joint at the suggestion that this piece, played beautifully, is in any way easy. This performance is very graceful and beautiful, but she is also a superb pianist. With technique. This isn't easy and if you are working on this piece, don't let that description discourage or bully you off of it. Just take Horowitz's advice "to play well you must do 3 things - practice, practice, practice."
Or as Tony Horton says: do your best and forget the rest
I absolutely love this piece... Music for all people... For all time!
And the second movement is played very very nicely. The correct speed at one that one can sit back close one's eyes and savour!

What a beautiful performance!!!
Reading while listening and visualizing oneself playing music is a sort of practice. Thank u
INCREDIBLE...what a GREAT peice of music
The first four bars are sublime; the rest of this Sonata facile ‘…for beginners’ (Mozart) is predictable, very limited, and probably his weakest piano sonata.
The endless Alberti bass is frankly boring in the 2nd movement, and overall, it does Mozart no service to big this sonata up into something it’s not.
This sonata is anything but facile!
le 1er mouvement surtout
@@MrPhil480 1st movement is mostly difficult in clarity but id argue overall difficult would be 2nd movement which is very musical. And 3rd movement is overall not as hard as the other 2
I've been playing piano for about a year, and I've just started studying this piece. It's certainly not "facile" for me at all, but I think that it's an excellent piece to study. It's challenging for a beginner, but it's not too difficult that an attempt would be a waste of time.
Exactly my thoughts
I would like to know where that sonata is easy ...
In all 3 movements. The hardest is probably the rondo and it was only grade 6 a few years ago.
@@mw11stuff let's hear you play it spotlessly. This only LOOKS easy but I confirmed with an international competition winning concert pianist that the amount of constant exposure in this sonata makes it terribly difficult to pull off. All while conveying the beauty in its simplicity. She said it's one of the last sonatas she'd choose for a public performance. "mozart is easy for amateurs and difficult for professionals"
@@pianoplaynight you can say that about basically any Mozart sonata, what a moot point. Don't even try to argue that this sonata is not easy, lots of beginners learn it and for a competent pianist it is basically sight readable. Many of the other sonatas are far harder in comparison. I don't need to show you my performance for this to be true.
@@mw11stuff it's technically among the easiest but as I repeat: the amount of exposure in it is largest than most other sonatas by M. Just ask a professional about it. There's much more to a piece than its technical difficulty
@@mw11stuff "the most difficult movement of the Moonlight sonata is the first", "kinderszenen is more difficult than the Fantasy", "voiles is among the most difficult preludes in book 1 by Debussy" - some of the things I've heard over the years from piano professionals and teachers, all of which sounded absolutely silly to me, then I learned about the things that people usually ignore: quality of sound, timbre, exposure, coherence of interpretation, etc etc, so many "hidden" difficulties that arise once you mastered the technical aspect of the music. Funny thing is that even some sight-readable music, like the k545, is actually considered difficult by professionals for non-technical aspects. As I said. Go and ask a professional pianist if they think this is easy, or if they would play this rather than another sonata. I asked a few and the answer was always the same. Wish you a good day.
