In this video I talk about the most important habit I developed this year which is...reading, specifically reading fiction! Reading has helped me be more consistent with exercise, nutrition, sleep, and my work, and is something that I've really fallen in love with. In this video I talk with Merphy Napier to discuss how to read more, and ways to make reading easier and more enjoyable. I can honestly say that this is one of the habits that is changing my life, and is the best habit I've formed this year.
Have a great week guys! Cheers.

I actually prefer goal videos like this. It's hard to make meaningful changes in fitness in just a week or even a month. So it's nice to see other areas of life that have tricks or habits to help improve them.

You can't just build your foundation of achieving goals on fitness alone. I like the diversification.

I’m actually not much into fiction but after watching Dune as a movie I decided to at least listen to an audiobook Dune while doing cardio. And I must say that even just listening to fiction actually made me feel better. Now I’ve watched your video and starting to think to finally try to read more fiction, not only non-fiction. Will try to give it a go and see the results. Thanks for the tips!

After a few years suffering from anxiety and depression, I noticed a considerable change after going to the library again, nowadays I go there at least once a week and I'm doing so much better ! I'm still not as fast a reader as I was as a teenager, but I'm ok with that 😄
And yeah, I totally agree with you about Stephen King, Revival was a great novel, and I could rave about his books for days !

I had a strong love of fiction books since my early childhood. Lay on my stomach, flip through the pages, and transport. It made me the person I am today.
My favourite book has to be "The Tale of the Fitness Bro Who Skipped Neck and Trap Exercises and Angered the Sky". Such a cautionary message, glad I read it at an early age, but it is never too late.

I read a lot of fiction as a kid into early teens but fell out of it as a teenager as I got busy with school/work/smartphones. I usually listen to sleep help audiobooks but they sometimes leave me feeling overwhelmed with all the things that "I should be doing" when I just want to simply and relax. Fiction sounds like a good solution.

Hey, haven't watched the video in full yet, but I already have to say that starting to read fiction this year has been a game changer and impoved every other aspect of my life.
I started as most start coming from this path of endless desire for a constant productivity increase and self improvement. From there it all started with "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. Even though I am not really a fan of the book in hindsight, the one thing that stuck with me was reading and being able to shift my focus away from all the noise of our daily lifes and unimportant drama to things that can be thought deeply about and are much more relevant in life.
A book on whatever topic helps me to collect my thoughts and really think about stuff not just in the surface level way social media has taught us to, but more deeply and engaging or critical. It has so many advantages... you start to understand how other people can think and feel, you're gonna be more empathetic, curious and a better listener. This in turn helps to really, and I mean really care about the people around you. Of course the drive for productivity never went away but now I pity those who cannot get rid of it for a moment and step back to see the bigger picture.
Make sure to decouple reading from productivity. It shouldn't be an item on your todo list and you don't want to reach some magic number of books at the end of the year. Keep it sustainable so you're just having fun. And it's ok to skip a book if you don't like the first 30 pages. I always have one fiction, one non-fiction and at least one book in english on my table so I don't feel like I need to get through ONE specific book before I can start the next one.

  • @Cricket776

I'm the opposite of most people, I have no self control when it comes to reading. I can't put books down and
everytime I read a book I will stay up all night to finish. Yet I have great discipline with social media, eating, TV, exercise and sleep habits otherwise. I have learned I can only start a book if I have the space in my life to devote 1.5 days to knocking out the book quickly, knowing my sleep schedule will get messsed up for one night . I haven' t had this space for years and defintely miss fiction.

And for 75 Hard the daily reading can NOT be fiction
I haven't completed 75 hard, but I always felt like that rule was really unnecessary and kinda dumb. Reading benefits are well beyond just the content of the book and it seems silly to limit it to just self improvement books 🤷‍♀️

Can't agree more with the benefits of reading fiction.
Started regularly reading at the start of the year and have been through nearly 50 books. Was struggling with motivation to go to work every morning, but now I actually look forward to my drive as I can listen to an audiobook for an hour.
I see a book now like a season of a t.v series. In my eyes, each chapter is an episode. If I feel like binging I'll read a few chapters in a single sitting.

I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree that reading fiction is important. I also like the video you did about reading 30 books in 30 days.
I do have to say, though, that I found "Revival" to suffer like a few of King's others, from a bad ending. I am a huge Stephen King fan (I grew up and live in small town Maine, how can I not be?), but while I felt "Revival" had a great beginning and middle, with excellent pacing and an interesting idea, the ending felt hokey to me. I won't spoil it, but I will say that, yes, if what the ending shows were real, that's a terrifying concept, but in my mind's eye it played out like a silly B-movie from long ago...
Great video, though. I love talking about books.

    • @GoalGuys
      @GoalGuys  Před rokem +1

I had the ending semi-spoiled for me, so I was reading the book with some idea of where is was going to end up, and really enjoyed it when I got there. But when I recommend it to Cam he really enjoy the first half and had a similar response to the ending. So I know there is definitely a divide on this one.
I grew up right beside Maine so reading King always felt close to home for me as well.
