  • The Ferrari F12 is an astonishing piece of engineering. But, when the 24 year old 550 was already capable of breaking the speed limit in less than ten seconds, and reaching almost 200mph - how usable can the stupendously fast F12 be, and is it still fun?

The F12 is the only car I’ve driven that scared me so much I was glad when my laps were finished. I did a driver day at Dunsfold, hit 170 from Gambon to the tyres (you go the opposite way round the track) even with the TCS on full assist it was sliding around on the gentlest of throttle inputs. That car wanted me dead, I’m surprised it didn’t stab me through the heart when my laps were over. I had so much adrenaline I was shaking for a good 10 mins or so after I got out.

Yes, felt the same. A GT3 on cold Cup2s feels more planted than an F12. Outright hairy car. And so darty, too. Amazing for a 45-minute drive, but less sure about the ownership proposition.

I owned Porsche Cup Car... no ABS, no TC... and there I was pushing it to the limit, when in fact... I'd only reached MY LIMIT. Each time I unstrapped myself from that evil beautiful beast... I would literally look at it... and I felt as if it were MOCKING me. There was so much more that it had to offer.. and I didnt reach 15th of it's potential. Then there was the Cup Car whine. It's a glorious sounding car when you are full throttle... but when you fall short of the powerband... it is as if it's laughing at you... calling you a "sissy" for being scared. I ultimately sold that car bought a 997.1 GT3RS and what a blaaaassssst.
      My point..
I missed the adrenaline rush of driving the Cup Car, and the only reason I sold is was because you never have the seat time in such track only cars as you imagine you would when you purchase. So... I just bought an f12 2 months ago... and reading accounts like this...
OOOOOH BOYYYYYEEEEEEE... I CANT WAAAAAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON THAT STALLION (she's currently getting suspension lowering and exhaust upgrades).
SO THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS STORY... I SOOOOO LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING THAT FEELING AGAIN.

@Leaf Closson I agree - For example, on the F12's rear, the circular taillight clusters conclude the elegant lines that begin at the front of the car. The simple design allows the bodywork to shape itself at the rear nicely. And that's just one of many reasons why it's a looker!

Drove my friend's Ferrari FF recently, and that V12 is sheer lunacy. When you talk about usability, the time between stationary and license-losing disappears in the blink of an eye. The theatre is incredibl, but outside of Germany you can only utilise it for tiny periods at a time. But it's all worth it for bein able too roll the windows down in a tunnel, there's nothing quite like that Ferrari V12 roar. The F12 is without a doubt my endgame car

Based upon my experience in the 599 the tail wagging under hard throttle seems to be highly susceptible to tire age and tire pressure - suspect this is likely the same - I massively reduced the rear waywardness on the 599 by fitting new tires and making sure the pressures were exactly as recommended on the door sticker

I've been toying with the idea of an F12 for a year or two. I love the looks and the sound but the performance is what bothers me. Ive been driving a 612 HGTC for 4 years and really, its has more performance than you can enjoy responsibilty. Like the 599, it also has that amazing ability to surprise you on a twisty B road (or my case an alpine mountain pass). My biggest concern about the F12 (apart from going to jail) is that it will ultimately be really frustrating to drive because its just too fast. Your summing up also reflects that too. I'm now actually thinking of going older, either a 550 or a 512TR. Something I can really drive properly and enjoy. Thanks for the videos. Really interesting to get this back to back perspective.

It is (I had a 612 too which has I'd say just adequate performance, 599 is the sweetspot with detuned Enzo lump) - F12 up to 3500 rpm is all intake roar so it goads you past that point to hear the rest of the engines fruits, and you look down and you doing 95 in third !

Brakes do take a bit of getting used to as you say. What helps is disconnecting the exhaust valve vacuum hoses.. means you hear that. I really enjoyed the trilogy of videos, my Ferrari knowledge is limited so I found them very informative. I'm not sure if I aspire to own a Ferrari as I find them just a bit too "obvious" and tend to go for rather more understated cars. I love JayEmm's style and the fact that even when driving the F12 was pleased to see an Alfa GT as I would be!

I had the pleasure of "sneaking into" a Ferrari Club track day at VIR back in 2017. There were a couple of F12s in attendance, one of which was actually being driven by someone with experience. I was regularly late for grid on account of listening to that V12 come out of the rollercoaster/"hog pen" turns and blast down the front straight.

I'm driving round in a car with a bit more than 200BHP/ton and I don't think I'm having any more fun than I did with a nice handling 100BHP/ton - except at traffic lights, but that's where you get blown off by sprightly 4 doors.
Unless you're Chris Harris and you've got an empty track serious power is almost irrelevant (though if I was offered 100 more BHP I'd always take it. You just would).
Anyone that's had a good drive in a BRZ (or MX5{Miata stateside]) knows the score - give it more torque and it'd be a serious/pragmatic choice as an everyday drive - in Europe at least.

As u said it, if it is a great handling car, is going to feel more satisfying than a not so good one even with more hp adding

I'd have thought that with this cars sensational power, speed, Ferrari would have come up with a head up display- cos the way this thing accelerates, you'd wanna keep your eyes ON the road! Have one in my Audi RS7- and when pressing on (sorry officer!),it's a bloody good idea/system. Don't know what you feel about a hud,James, but I'd like to know.
Ps- you remember me asking for a "supercar" suggestion? Well, after trying a fair few, from Audi/Aston/Porsche, I'm now the very proud, and excited (and a little nervous) owner of....
A Ferrari California 430!! And- I was determined not to have a rosso one, and found a beautiful white one, with a full red interior! Please don't laugh, but I just fell in love with it, before I even sat in it! Might not be mega fast, but it makes me smile every time I drive it- AND I AM driving it- it sure won't sit in the garage for days/weeks at a time- it IS used, and driven, almost daily- so let's see if my first Ferrari will be my last Ferrari, or the start of a long love affair! But right now, I couldn't be happier!
Ohh- and loved your California video- thats what prompted me to look at them. Keep making great videos- please!
    Cheers babes! X

Fantastic series for the perspective and tribute. But I'd like to know Jay, why is it we couldn't get the motorway experience at speed reviewed? These virtuouso V12's are obviously designed for the autobahns and autostradas of the world where they can open up and run free.

Having peaked out at a McLaren 12C myself, I suspect 'too fast for the road' could be a conclusion. I've gone back down the hill since. I recognise that look of concentration/bunny-in-the-headlights at 8:00 :-)

A big V12 should be scary & take driving talent to keep it in check. That's what makes it special, exciting and the top rung in the Ferrari and Lamborghini range. The V8/V10 are the 'sports' cars to take around the twisty's for fun. You take the V12 down those roads to feel alive!

I always thought this with modern large bhp cars, I live in the Peak District and have some fantastic, technical roads on my doorstep. I definitely do not have the talent to drive something like this "enthusiastically" on said roads. 350-400bhp would more then do the job!
Maybe I just need to book into a driving school? ha

I had a drive in the Peak District a few weeks back. Know what you mean. Was in a little light weight two seater and amazing fun. Also got a 400bhp v8 GT car and even “only” 400bhp I’d have been tiptoeing around because of its size and weight. Not built for some of those corners.
