On "My Car Story" we're in Flint MI on 6-27-15 at the Sloan Museum 43rd Annual Auto Fair.
We're looking at a 1963 Buick Riviera Silver Arrow I Concept Car.
We’re talking with Jeremy Dimick, the Curator of Collections at The Sloan Longway Musuem.
According to the details shared on the Sloan Museums website regarding the 1963 Buick Riviera Silver Arrow I Concept Car:
During a trip to England, automotive designer Bill Mitchell caught a glimpse of a Rolls Royce emerging from the fog. Inspired by the vision, he began designing what would become the Silver Arrow I. He attempted to marry the sporting character of an Italian Ferrari to the luxury look of a British Rolls Royce.
He thought of it as a Cadillac, a rebirth of the division’s LaSalle. But when Cadillac turned it down, he offered it to GM’s other divisions and Buick won the competition. It evolved almost intact into the first production Riviera.
Mitchell’s customization of this 1963 Riviera converted into a show vehicle, which he enjoyed driving regularly. Among other modifications, its roof was lowered more than two inches and its special interior was trimmed in silver leather.

I absolutely love my 63 Buick Riviera
Nice :-)
That thing is drop dead GORGEOUS. The 65 model is my favorite car from that entire decade, maybe any decade....
High praise :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Imagine this car in 63 ! must have been like a spaceship !
Sounds about right :-) Thank you for viewing and commenting, Lou
My Grandad worked for Buick when he left school to support his parents in 1910. My Dad worked for Buick from the time he left the Navy in 1945. We always had Buicks in the driveway. My earliest memories are of that huge chrome bumper front or rear. I wish Dad would've spent his retirement funds on Riv's, Gran Sports, and Deuce and a quarter's. The legacy would have been fantastic. Grandad showed me his Riviera in his garage in Flint. It had two four BBLs on it. I think it was 1963 or 1964. I was just a kid and didn't know what I was looking at.
Hi Dave, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Grandad and his car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
My God Bill Mitchell took a beautiful automobile and made it rolling art. The trim work is outstanding. Lou, you constantly amaze me in the pieces of automotive history that you find.

A HUGE THANK YOU for this wonderful narration on the Silver Arrow Riviera! I have been interested in it since I first laid eyes on it! The lines are PERFECT by the Master himself- Bill Mitchell! I purchased a 1967 after seeing pictures of this car. I could not find a nice 1965. This was built when it was really something to be able to drive something like this! No new car has anything on the Silver Arrow!

Really enjoy your channel with these amazing cars from the past. Just so unfortunate the cars of today and recent years don’t have the beauty, uniqueness, individuality and character of the cars from the 60’s and 70’s. Love this amazing vehicle. Oh yea, just subscribed and looking forward to so many more of your vids. Hopefully you did some on the ‘71-‘76 Cadillac De Villes and Fleetwoods.

@@loucostabile :). Thanks !!
Wow! A stunning work of art meeting design coupled with technology!
Hi A. Archer, High praise :-) Lou
The last 200 Rivieras that Buick built in the 1999 model year were Silver Arrows, but I still like this original one much better. We need Buick to build some exciting cars again!! How about a production version of the Blackhawk? I’m surprised this one doesn’t have the dual quad equipped Super Wildcat engine, but it’s still a wow, wow, and wow car, and it makes my Electra look a little plain. But I’ve owned the Electra for over 25 years, and have no intention of ever selling it. Go Buick!! And thanks Lou for another great car story.
Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) You're welcome.
Absolutely beautiful. I would LOVE to own it!!!
Glad to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
Another gorgeous Riv. Great color. Too bad it didn't make it didn't make it to production.

Lou Costabile thanks man! I enjoy every car I’ve seen on your channel. I especially loved the red ‘59 Bonneville. That’s on my list!
Love Bill Mitchell's excellent GM styling and design!

What a priceless Gem of a car..i didn't know this car existed.. I own the 1972 Riviera GS edition in which I thought was its crown jewel of the Rivieras but viewing this one whoa takes away even the models of 66, 67, 68, 69, and 70..
High praise for this car :-)
I just bought a 63 and love it. Just a cool car. Same size as my 69 GTO.
Congratulations Paul C ! Glad you are behind the wheel of your fun car :-) Lou
What color?
Gloss Black with black interior. Just recromed the bumpers and installed new windshield and back window glass. Still waiting for someone to reproduce the tail light bezels. Car is from SC. No rust at all.
Riviera the definition of class. What a beautiful car I got a 73 I'm working on I can't wait to finish it.
Glad you enjoy this "classy" one Carnivore Eats :-) Hope your 73 turns out great, Lou
Ah man, I really love all the rivs up till and including 73
How do I know which to get?!!
I own a 1965 Buick Riviera. And it had the same Interior as this one. It was the best riding car. But this one in the museum is awesome.
Hi Paul Sharp, Sounds like you have a great car too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

The Wildcat 445, with a single four-barrel carburetor, was the standard engine in the Invicta, 1959-1966 Electra, 1962-1966 Buick Wildcat, 1963 Riviera and 1965 Riviera (the 1964 and 1966 Riviera models used the 425 with a single four-barrel carburetor, labeled Wildcat 465, as standard equipment). Mounted on a trolley, Buick 401s were also used as starter motors for the SR-71 Blackbird supersonic jet.

General Motors corporate executives asked Cadillac to take the project to make the concept car into a production model. But Cadillac turned it down because they had thier hands tied on other projects. So, GM executives asked Chevrolet and Chevrolet was not interested. GM executives then told Buick, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile to figure out amongst them who is going to take the project. Finally, Buick gave in and took the project to create the Riviera. True story!

That is awesome. Love it! AM / FM radio in '65? I was thinking FM was later, like in the early 70s but maybe not. Could have been upgraded at anytime, of course. Just an awesome custom and yet not too radical. Bill Mitchell knew cars.
Glad you thought this is awesome :-) Hope you find other cars on the Channel you'll enjoy too, Lou
Actually, F.M has been around since the 1930s but it wasn't until the 1950s did it pick up in popularity with audiophiles.
Did you see the size of those door hinges holy smokes look like 1 inch plate, This car is sick

That's one bad ass Buick. The turn signals on the trunk. Came out on the 1970s olds Tornado. And then on the Buick Riviera in the mid 1970s. And now it's in the back window of today's cars.
Glad you enjoy this one Michael Hatcher :-) Thank you for sharing, Lou

It's almost to hot to touch!
Keep it up 👍🏻. Just a friendly recommendation: try to to videos with a wide lens on a camera and try to don’t shake it too much and smoothly move ,
Cars you find are unicorns 👍🏻
Hi Ronin, Happy your enjoying the car choices. I do use a wide angle lens, and I'll do my best to stay smooth. This is an early video (2013-2015) and early videos may look warped as I had to learn the hard way that when uploading DO NOT click the yes, stabilize this video button :-( Thanks for the tips, Lou
SWEET
:-)
I have never seen this car before. I can see the Art Deco throwback influence that Bill Mitchel was going after. The color, chopped top, wide whites, use of chrome and the hubcaps give it the late 30's Deco or streamline feel that GM was probably going after if they were thinking of bringing back the LaSalle brand. Two words. Bad. Ass.
Hi Seth, Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts and knowledge, Lou
where can I see the silver arrow do they have the car on loan or is it always at this Museum
I believe it's the Museums car now, and you can see it @ The Sloan Longway Museum in Michigan @ sloanlongway.org Take care, Lou

Must’ve been nice to be the chief designer at GM in the sixties. (Or the fifties.) Harley Earl was the man of his time and Bill Mitchell was the man of _his_ time. I would hate to have to say which I like better. I like them both.
Liking them both is understandable :-)
The last Silver interior that I really liked in another car was in the 78 Corvette Silver Anniversary pace car, the interior was just beautiful.
Hi Crazy Canuck, Glad to read you enjoy this car :-) Lou

Cool GM perk, to get to drive around in a HotMod as a Daily Driver...I would get a Silver Mylar Lost in Space uniform to drive around in; by the way, can I trade my Prius for it?
I like the driving in a "Silver Mylar Lost in Space uniform" idea :-) Pretty sure the museum will be sharing this one with the public for a awhile.
to a previous poster, states on air cleaner lid "wildcat 465" as the man says, it was a production Riviera taken of the line and modded. It is not to much of a stretch to think after the body mods the did a little something with the engine as well.
+Aaron Aaron Hmm, something to think about.. Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
You're both wrong. My dad purchased a brand new 1964 Buick Wildcat equipped with the Wildcat 465 engine. Indeed, the air cleaner lid sticker was absolutely identical to this car's.
"465" representing peak gross engine torque. This is documented fact that I've been aware of since 1967 or so (when I was a toddler): www.teambuick.com/reference/nailhead_engine_specs.php
Buick produced hundreds of thousands of these engines that were adorned with the identical air cleaner assembly and sticker. They were commonplace in wrecking yards during the 1970s and earlier 1980s.
This is one is presently for sale:

Hi Bernard, Thanks for viewing, Lou
That is the prettiest car of the 20th century, that is a drivable... The 30s and 40s saw some gorgeous cars that just wouldn't work today. That car could easily be put into production today and it would sale. I have decided to not buy any cars new for ten more years. To me the car companys know what to make and how people want to feel in a car. They know how to make you fall in love. However, they choose to produce the Luke warm designs with cheap paint and plastic interiors.

The car is a 64 not a 63. The 63 was the last year of the dynaflow with Reverse position being located in the last shift position from Park instead of the position just below the "Park" position. Also the 63 did not have the "R" hood emblem; it had the three shields Buick emblem. I've owned 4 Rivieras-- a 63, 64, 65, and a 67 GS what a beast that thing is.

The name Silver Arrow may be a hint that Mr Mitchell was inspired by a R-R Silver Cloud. 1976-2013 I owned a Bentley S-2, which very well may have some traits in common with the Silver Arrow and Riviera. (Still, I am aware that the Coke-bottle look could also be found in the 1962 Studebaker Avanti and some 1962 Pontiacs.) After Rolls-Royce designer John P Blatchley´s sketches for a new R-R were considered too modern by the executives, he designed the more conservative Silver Cloud. The Silver Clouds and their Bentley S-Type sisters were produced 1955-1965 (the last Bentley SIII Continental in 1966), when the much more modern Silver Shadow was introduced, but even that did not have an interior as futuristic as the Riviera.
It is feasible that it was playing inspiration to Bentley but I doubt that was the case. American cars came from American culture which had very little influence from outside. American movies, Music and technology did not use european inspiration.
From the time of Ford model T straight through to the mustang American cars were purely America.
Anyone who searches for information on technology, culture, art and what not will soon find a great many examples of mutual inspiration since cross-Atlantic communications began.
As far as the Buick Riviera is concerned, let me quote a few of the sites which came up when I Googled:
"According to historian Michael Lamm and former GM stylist David Holls in their fascinating book, A Century of Automotive Style, "The 1963 Riviera became one of Mitchell's favorite designs. Crisp razor edges, inspired by Rolls-Royce, blended into the sporty overtones of a Ferrari." (www.hemmings.com/magazine/hcc/2005/03/1964-Radical-Riviera/1281181.html)
"Some of his [GM’s chief stylist Bill Mitchell] inspiration came from seeing a Rolls-Royce cutting through the foggy night while visiting the 1959 London Motor Show." (cruise-in.com/buick-produces-a-sixties-styling-icon/)
"What became the magnificently styled 1965 Buick Riviera originally was designed for a high-end Cadillac and was inspired by the Rolls Royce cars that Mitchell saw while in London." (www.fossilcars.com/blog/1965-buick-riviera/)
The name "Silver Arrow" was first used on a Pierce-Arrow show car in the 30's, not a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. Google it; it's beautiful.

Hi D Hall, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
its not a 465 v8 its a 401 or a 425 nailhead
+Kaden Dechant
445 or 465 is the torque output. 445 is the 401 and 465 is the 425. Beautiful car!
Cj Boyle
445 oops 401
Kaden Dechant
youre right.
Buick V8s were named by torque output and not displacement up till 1968
It's a 425 as evidenced by the "465" on the air clearer lid. "465" represented peak gross engine torque for the 425, while "445" represented the 401's peak engine torque: www.teambuick.com/reference/nailhead_engine_specs.php
465 is the torque for the 425 nailhead
As was normal for Buick, that would be the engine torque number on the air cleaner, not the engine size.
