I knew a guy who worked at his family’s restaurant all through school. He was never paid, but the deal was that when he turned 16, he would get a car. He turned 16 in 1987. Got a Grand National just like that one.

Here's some good news, pat's driveline is from Calgary Alberta, we only started using salt in the road a few years ago, so Alberta xars usually aren't rusty. Pat's is also a very good shop making custom drive shafts and are usually considered high quality work!
I had suspected it was from Calgary when I saw the 1988 Calgary Olympic decal on the rear quarter window!
@@chrisgudz7867 OH, I didn't see that!
FYI Pat's is in Alberta and B.C they have more then 1 shop. There are 3 in Edmonton alone.

Previous accident damage in a car built in 1987 would not be unusual. That was a long time ago. Here is hoping it was repaired properly.
Is there any chance the owner was buddies with his mechanic and squeezed the insurance company for $10K worth of damages, but then only paid for a minor dent repair/respray and pocketed the rest? :)
Or it could have just needed something like glass and rims?
Well he did say in the last video it had been in an minor accident. So I wouldn’t be surprised lol
Yeah it’s no problem on that car.
@@dizzy2020 Yes, I have a 2012 Maxima, that I love that about a year after I bought it in 2016 I hit a parked pick up truck on the side of the road. (I was being ignorant, and drove into the sun with a mostly fogged windshield blinding me.) It took out the right front suspension and the passenger side fender and front valence. I hauled to a body and fender man I trusted for a lot of restoration work he had done on my vintage Buicks. By the time he was done with the repair on the Maxima which was covered by insurance, even I couldn't tell where the damage had occurred and I knew where to look. It will probably show up on a Car Fax report if I ever sell the car, but that is a non-issue for me.

That car does NOT have the factory HD 8.5" rear axle and appears to have the standard 7.5" axle. The driveshaft being new and paint marker on the tube tells me it has been swapped. The cast iron fangs on the bottom of the housing instead of square corners are a clear indicator that it has been swapped to the inferior rear axle.
Yep. Square cover too. Get that out of there hoovie. Easy to find them though.

your video has got me even more on a mission to find my grandmother's 86 regal limited my Uncle decided to be an a** and he got it when she. Passed against her wishes and then sold it without telling anyone in the family. She loved this car loved it my dad got my grandfather's truck he paid for it. I have the engine and transmission that was the favorite part of that truck to him. He loved the power that that truck had and I want the car to put that engine in transmission back in. I think that would be the ultimate combination of a lifelong vehicle you give me a mission
fine mission my dude i wish you luck with it
Good luck with that 🤞❤️
OMG this brings back some memories. The paint on the upper surfaces cracked due to bad primer. Check the exhaust manifolds, they all crack. I would highly suggest that you check both the oil supply and return lines for the turbo just to make sure everything is clean and flowing oil. If any of that goes bad it runs metal through both the motor and the turbo. I would also suggest replacing the hoses on the intercooler and intake pipe, those were not very good and had a tendency to blow off easy under boost. I do miss mine. I hope you keep it, so I can continue to enjoy the stroll down memory lane!

Nice one Tyler! Pat’s driveline does great work, I have brought a few driveshafts to them.
I worked in the parts industry on Canadas west coast for a number of years. Dealt with the crew at Pat’s many times. Good people over there, and they do good work.
Man, the simple banter, and hanging out with Wizard is when you BOTH make your best content. Absolutely love it. Whenever I see you are futured in one of his videos, i click every time.
You recoverd well from your little accident and the Buick is in good condition well done
The Wizard laughs at you laying on the ground in pain and then immediates states that he's worried about you. Green wicking Loctite is also a great product for sealing up porous castings and pinhole leaks. It wicks into the casting and then dries hard as a rock. Better than silly cone. What it's primarily made for is wicking into threads on bolts that are already tight and then becoming very hard like normal green loctite.
It is called "schodenfreuden" and is an understandable trait!
@@stephcooper5998 Understandable, yes, but desirable? I think not. If I take pleasure in another's pain it means I'm without empathy. I suppose this is why it's commonly said that 'men are wolves to men'. Homo Homini Lupus.

Well said
Having had a Regal in the past, the main issue with the front end is that the entire front forward of the hood is fiberglass and plastic aside from the bumper. If you tap something or clip it on something even a little bit, it simply disintegrates and is 100% non-repairable. The entire front piece has to be replaced. It's also flimsy enough that it provides zero impact protection, so a 5 or 10mph oops in a parking lot is the front fenders, radiator, and front end/grille all having to be looked at. Almost every one of these old cars has had the front rebuilt as it's very common to destroy them. One a special model like this, finding the proper front grille... not cheap.
I had a 87 T Type and yes, the front clip was fiberglass and the trim below the clip was color matched vinyl. However, the bumpers were pretty solid and could be straightened, but more commonly, the bumper shocks were what failed in light impact collisions. The ease of repairing these front ends was epically easy. If you found parts of the same color you could fix in less than 2hrs time. The rubber strip on bumper was probably the most annoying cause it didn’t take much to mar that thing up. $35 at the dealership (in 1987 that is). This vehicle was an awesome find.
That dramatic fall was spectacular Tyler good job keep it up love it
Favorite test drive I ever took was in one of these but sadly only had a one car budget and GN did not deserve salty Ottawa winters but watching those turbo leds dance brought smiles to all 3 of us in the car. Hope your crotch heals soon!
This was the car that always made me *super* interested in fiddling with my car radio every time one pulled up next to me at a red light👻 My shiny new 1988 Mustang GT 5.0 was quick in its day but stock for stock the GN could have its way with just about anything on the road!
if I'm not mistaken, your 'stang had 225 hp right? There was lots you could do to it to up that number (polishing the intake plenum was popular) but off the rip not a lot compared to the grand nash. A co-worker had a pic of his doing a wheelie at the drag strip.
@@muskokamike127 Yep. Power adders and aftermarket heads were just coming on line back then. Eventually 5.0 world figured out that above 500 HP the stock 302 blocks would sort of split in two. IDK. Back then I was doing good to make car and insurance payments at age 21, I needed that car to stay trouble free. Besides, I had just put my 429 police engine swapped 1972 Mach 1 together, I wanted to save the mods for it. (As a side note: Installing a set of Hooker two piece long tube headers on a 429 in a ‘72 Mustang is an exercise that added a rich variety of four letter words to my vocabulary!)
@@F9FCJ429 As for the mach 1, oddly enough that's not the first time I heard that tale of woe haha. Didn't the mach 1 come with an optional 429 though from the factory?
The 5.0 mustang was kick of the hill for a while with 225 hp. then GM came along with the Grand nash and said "hold my beer". I think the iroc had 225 but it was a much bigger car so it was moot.
The 300 lb/ft of torque is what really made the 5.0 so much fun.
My friend had a modified 87 Grand National back in the 90s. That car was so much fun! I know he wishes that he had held on to it.
Hello Hoovie! Steve Mags here. I like your Grand National look-see! I remember when you bought it at the recent Barrett-Jackson West Palm auction and seeing you parking it at the hotel! One nifty detail about that dash....one of the idiot lights on the right bank is marked "POWER INJECTION" but you'll NEVER SEE it unless you shine a powerful flashlight onto the lens face! Its a "dormant gene" left over from a dead-ended 1984-up Buick water injection system that never entered production. Obviously nobody told the dash lens contract manufacturer to scrub the "POWER INJECTION" marking / lens from the dash fascia before vehicle installation began! Grab a bright light and shine it 2/3 of the way down the R.H. idiot light stack. A nifty Easter egg from Buick! Love your channel, and you are a BIG influence on me and my Junkyard Crawl series. After all these years from being a little kid to now an adult the Grand National is still on the top of the dream car list close second being a clean black 5speed 4WS Prelude but at this point I'd take any sub model of both of them👌
I love the center high mounted brake light. It is obviously a manufacturer add-on prior to the light being integrated into the body. Bought a '65 Corvair from a guy who had one of these. Beautiful cars!

Tyler PLEASE read this. These cars absolutely, hands down, need a GN specialist. Have a GN guy look it over and give it a spring cleaning. Vortex Buicks is a great site if you want Wizard to do it. Will help him with the absolute Rubics Cube these are.
They really aren't even rubix cube hard, they just have some quirks. It's easy enough to study on that it hurts to watch people just...not. leaning on it with audible detonation will work out well I'm sure.
@@HSTvids357 What I was trying to get across was these are cars that a standard mechanic will start diving into and make things worse. Wizard likely doesn’t have the time to learn the “GN quirks” and it would make good content to bring it to a specialist and film it.
@@I-Teee there are a few great ones it would be great to get to see more exposure of, I agree
Depending where in Canada, $10,000 in damage could have been a hail storm. I had a car that saw nearly $15,000 in hail damage while living in Alberta. I was $1200 away from getting my car replaced entirely. That would be all panel damage and no structural. Maybe?
That would explain the new paint job.

Love the pass mirror stalk in that area.
Sorry Hoovie. I feel your pain and I did not go into surgery. 😢❤
Hoovie, the reason you have a aftermarket drive shift is because the rear in the car is not the factory rear. The rear in your car looks to be a 7.5 from a Monte Carlo or a cutlass. Where is the grand nationals should have an 8.5 inch rear. The smaller rear requires a longer drive shaft. I’m a Buick youtuber, I would know.
He paid for a new drive shaft to use a wimpy rear end that's leaking - sounds like a bunch of poor decisions there.
@@andoletube The 7.5 rear is about 5/8 " shorter than the CORRECT GN 8.5. They HAD to get a new driveshaft.
The Cutlass 442 got a 8.5" rearend too but with 3.73s. The Grand National got 3.42s.
@@stevencovington4715 I realise that, but imagine swapping that leaky old diff to go with your brand new drive shaft - and a smaller, weaker diff at that. Not decisions I would make.
That car is as old as I am born in 87 which means that car is 35 years old going on 36 and it still looks amazing
Right there with ya. I was born in '87 as well.
@@dizzy2020 Crazy to think that when they were born I was already done with high school.
Im glad you got a good clean car. Sweet.
I have an SVO I rescued that was going to be butchered by a guy to use the body for a drag car despite being in fairly good shape body/interior wise. The guy got it cheap, with both him and the previous owner's logic being, "it's just a non-running 4 cylinder," because at the time I guess the original turbo had died and was missing along with the valve cover and piping. I cleaned it up, rebuilt it using mostly period correct performance parts, and it's a blast to drive now. I also picked up a 2019 ecoboost Mustang with the high performance package as salvage for dirt cheap at auction (again, "it's just a 4banger" mentality, left me being the only bidder). Rebuilt what was needed for cheap with a few upgrades and tune. Obviously they're not going to win against a built V8 car in a straight line, but they're both plenty fast enough to get around and then some with great handling on top while not guzzling a lot of gas.
I suspect if you look very closely, you will find out that the car got "front clipped". The front of the car (including the frame rails) is in much better shape than the rest. I think if you check, the "clean" is going to stop right around the subframe connectors. They likely bolted back on the original suspension and all to save a bit, but the parts are about 2k and about 8 to 10 hours work, plus body panels and paint, and you can make it to 10k without effort.
The 1987 Buick Regal (Grand National's base) was a full perimeter frame car, not a unit-body with subframe.
